I was very hesitant to pick this up, since I didn't have a good time with Code Veronica X. CV:X was the 1st survival horror game that I ever played, and i remember hating the awkward movement and the fact that I couldn't see what I was aiming at, and I wasn't immersed into the environment, so evidently, I didnt even last 2 days with it lol. Little did I know that RE4 game would be in and out of my PS2 for a week, as I enjoyed it very much. I finished it today, and while part of me was tired, the other part of me just wanted to get back into it immediately.
As soon as I started playing, the controls made me feel right at home. The movement felt more 'natural', and the 180 degree turn was useful in a lot of the enemy encounters. What was a big selling point for me was the over-the-shoulder camera and the introduction of an aiming system, which helped in the overall strategy of taking down enemies that crossed your path. You can shoot off arms, legs, and of course the good ol' head shot.
The game has an overwhelming level of tension and anxiety as you uncover more enemies/bosses and the story is equally as haunting, the landscape feels really big as you go from section to section, so the map really comes in handy when you get lost/stuck.although the game was hard at certain points, it was forgiving because of the unlimited continues.
Pros: Challenging and immersive story mode, Lots of weapons/upgrade system, tight and fluid control scheme, big and scary environments, memorable boss fights, good amount of replay value
Con: No dodge button (but the action button kinda makes up for it)

Simply an amazing game, if you haven't played this you should. The mixture of horror and action is fantastic.
