Saints Row: The Third User Review
- Difficulty:
- Very Easy
- Time Spent:
- 20 to 40 Hours
- The Bottom Line:
- "Just plain fun"
Saints Row: The Third was pretty much as I expected. The gameplay is crazy in every possible way, and the surprises almost never end. This game likes to make fun of itself sometimes it seems. The story is way out of hand all the time and is essentially there only to make you laugh, especially with its great cast of characters.
If you ever cared about the story from the first two games though you may as well forget about it. Saint's Row The Third throws away just about aspects of the story from the first two games in favor of a nonstop action packed comical setting.
The game itself has so many activities, minigames, and things to do it would be far too time consuming to even being to discuss. However, there are a great deal of things that can be said to attest to the game's greatness.
Co-Op:
Co-Op is arguably Saints Row's best feature. Even though this mode is limited to only two players it makes the Single Player look boring by comparison. Every activity and story mission can be completed with two people making it twice as much fun. Another great feature is that if one of the two players owns DLC packs, the vehicles can be shared by both players even if both don't own the DLC, the abilities however will remain tied to the owner of the DLC.
Vehicles:
The first thing that comes to my mind concerning Saint's Row is the vast quantity of vehicles available to the player in the game, from the somewhat typical sedans all the way to the most outrageous vehicles like the Gat Mobile and the Sexy Kitten. Of course you also get your motorcycles, planes, helicopters, boats, and even some futuristic vehicles like the VTOL.
Although there are many vehicles available, many of them feel pretty similar in both design and driving style. This is fixed with the Customization System for cars allowing the player to change the rims, paint color, and even tweak a few body mods. Unfortunately, not every vehicle can be customized and overall the entire system can feel a bit weak at times due to its seemingly small array of options.
Activities:
There are many returning activities to Saints Row, Insurance Fraud, Trail Blazing, Heli Assault, Escort, Snatch, Mayhem and Trafficking are all back. However, there are also new activities. My personal favorite is Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax, a game show where you must survive in an arena of mascots and brutes to make it to the end. There's also Tank Mayhem (pretty self explanatory) and Guardian Angel. There is also a good number of minor distractions even streaking is included among these...
On top of all that, you can access "Saints Book" an app on your cell phone in game to grant you access to even more things to do.
Whored Mode:
Not your typical horde mode, "Whored" Mode allows two players to fight waves of ridiculous enemies in various styles. Weapons range from the rocket launcher to the infamous "Penetrator." The concept is simple enough and with a friend, it's a good little distraction from the main game.
Technical/Performance:
The game runs great but visually this game is no powerhouse. The texture quality is low, and there is little difference between playing in 1920x1080, 1440x900, and even 1280x800 for me. Still, this doesn't take away anything from the game and as a whole it manages to still look decent (just don't look at the textures too long). The game also occasionally minimizes the screen and pops back into the game (more frequently in co-op), but this is a very minor issue that is easily ignored. Overall, this is a fantastic PC port compared the disaster that was Saints Row 2.
Overall, Saints Row: The Third is a pretty fun game that shouldn't be missed especially if you have a friend you can take along for the ride.
Pros -
+ Entertaining characters and stories
+ A lot of fun for a long time.
+ A wide array of minigames and activities
+ Fantastic 2 Player Co-Op
Cons -
- Customization could be more extensive
- Limited variety of enemies
Score: 8 / 10
