It upsets me how easily people accuse Ethan Mars of being a bad parent. Anyone can lose a child in an accident. Children have the tendency to wander off and dart over somewhere without looking where they're going. You let go of a child's hand for a second in order to get something off a shelf, and next thing you know he's gone. That's not bad parenting. Bad parenting would have been if Ethan had encouraged Josh to cross the street alone.
It's also not his fault that a serial killer kidnapped his other son! Granted, it's the kind of misfortune that only happens in fiction, but that's still not bad parenting either. He showed unrestrained courage and love to go save his son from certain death. Other parents would have stayed at home and let the police handle it.
1 Like @Jarlathazzard It's not that he's a bad Dad. It's that hes terrible at keeping track of where children are. And if he babysat for me and got my kid stolen by a serial killer, something tells me he wouldn't cut of his finger for me.
@ZDude46 @Jarlathazzard Bad parenting is not a sin in and off itself, it becomes a sin depending on why it happens in the first place, if you are stupid and you make a mistake by accident, you might not be fit to be a parent, but its not a sin, if this happens because you dont pay atention to your kid because you dont give a damn about them, thats a sin, and you are DEFINITELY not fit for parenting. These kinds of people exist, i know them, some of my cousins are the later and i terribly grieve for their kids lol >_>
1 Like @Jarlathazzard Regardless of whether a parent looses their child "by accident" or... what? On purpose? it's bad parenting.
Secondly, if you review the situation, Jason didn't dart off unexpectedly or twist away from Ethan's grip in a huge crowd. Ethan said something to the effect of "wait here" as Jason was slowly wandering off right in front of him. What did Ethan do? He TURNED HIS BACK on a wandering away Jason to fiddle around for 5 minutes to pay the clown. Know what my parent would've done? They would've grabbed me and pulled me back to them, dropped down to eye level with me and told me, "DON'T MOVE." Then they will be free to pay the balloon clown.
And, hypothetically speaking, if that balloon-paying incident was in fact some type of horrible unavoidable accident, why did Ethan spend minutes WALKING around the mall incessantly calling out to his son? If I remember correctly, there's no way to sprint, or just walk a bit faster even.
The loss of his second son is so absurd I'm not even going to touch it. So I'll grant you that "wasn't his fault" somehow. It just doesn't help Ethan's track record.
But hey, this game was a total steaming pile of inconsistencies, so I'm basically just splitting hairs.
