I don't have a pirated version, I have the original CD. I've had it installed on my old desktop computer for years. It has worked and continues to work okay on there, but now I'd like it on my laptop. Should I try uninstalling it and reinstalling it on my old desktop to test the install source?
Thanks so much for your help.

No, I'd recommend copying it from your old desktop to your laptop.
It should still work (although you may need to apply the 2k/XP compat patch if you haven't already).

The normal patch and not the compat patch? Fix a lot bugs, a memory error or two, and rebalance the game a bit.

Ok, I can run SMAC on my Win XP machine, however, when I choose to play crossfire, it lets me select the start game, custom world, custom rules, etc..., the next screen before you actually start playing should be where you select faction(s), on this screen it just gives the pic and quote for cybernetic faction, with no clickable windows, I cannot select anything, there are no buttons, etc... at this point the only option is to ctrl-alt-del and end task.
suggestions?
note, i have tried changing many things in the alpha.ini
i have tried the updates and comp patch
Dec 31, 2006 6:39 pm GMT
That would be because alpha.txt isn't the file you edit for Alien Crossfire. That's for Alpha Centauri.
alphax.txt is for Alien Crossfire.
That error comes up when you (or someone else) has editted the alphax.txt file, added in a faction, then deleted the faction file (or otherwise having an invalid faction). Could also be from using the faction editor.
Try fiddling around with the alphax.txt file. If your fiddling doesn't find it, just rename it and run the game, if I remember right it should create a new alphax.txt file.

I have checked alphax.txt, as you said, it is not the same, in fact... The material covered here is vastly different than that of the alpha.ini, there is also an alpha.txt, but I have not tinkered with that one.
Any suggestions on what changes I could try???
I see next to nothing in this file about faction selection.. etc..
mainly about game rules??????

Ohhh... you're talking about "Alpha Centauri.ini".
Give me a bit.

Probably the same, but since I don't have Vista (nor will I install it on one of my machines), I can't tell.

I've got a slight problem - in my current game, whenever I hit the year 2403, the game "Has encountered an error and must close immediately" or somesuch. I think I've gone past 2403 in previous games, so...any idea why it's doing this? It literally just closes off at the start of the 2403 turn, and since I'm playing an iron man game, I don't have a save to backup to until 2397, and no matter what I do differently, it still crashes.
Any idea what's wrong?

I can play Alien Crossfire for a long time, but well into a game it crashes for some reason, and when I restart from the autosave, I can play a few turns until it crashes again. It never crashes when I play Alpha Centauri though.

Both problems are most likely the same thing - someone has an air-to-air unit that is trying to defend outside the city.
Alien Crossfire tends (~75% chance) to crash from that.
The other thing it could be is that a volcano is trying to appear in the world underneath an existing unit - instacrash.

Yeah, it usually seems to happen when there are enough jets flying around. In my most recent game as the Cybernetic Consciousness, I was the sole possessor of Doctrine: Air Power for a good many years (no one had it by the time the game crashed); I'd constantly be bugged by other factions for it.
The first time it happened, though, I had been doing regular bombing raids on Usurper land improvements as the Data Angels for at least a century. When it happened, I was landing Probe Teams and sending them into a size 13 Usurper colony.

I never had the problem with CPU support until I installed the patch.

well, ill tell ya i havnt checked to make sure if it was runnin alright or what yet but...
I have alpha centauri+crossfire and i was gona throw it on my usb to take over to a friends to play, noticed the file b4 was like in the 600 mb area, get ready today, and it was 6gigs
turns out my alphafac.txt is1.82 gigs and my alphax.txt is 3.74 gigs they are in the faction fodler
i dont recall doing anything to alter those files to cause somethign like that, most ive done is regular mods listed here just to get the game to work, then i created my own custom profile, but i doubt it would cause that.
anyone have an idea what i can do? and please dont say clean install cause i had one _____ of a time getting it to work now

if ya wana be nice n send it to me, message me on msn - bogie132004@hotmail.com
or aim - Rubic13
(i dont wana post my private email here)
thanks

You have a corrupted filesystem on that computer. At the very least your SMAC folder is screwed, if not a lot more.
Run checkdisk immediately. Right click your hard drive in My Computer, go to properties, Tools tab, check disk for errors.
It'll tell you something along the lines of, "This must be scheduled for the next restart". Do so, and restart the computer when you don't need to use it for an hour or so.

Nope. That bug was actually added by Alien Crossfire. You just need to work around the bug, sorry.
