Difficulty:
Very Easy

10 Hours or Less
The Bottom Line:
"Total letdown"
SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs is the latest entry in the notorious SOCOM franchise. You play as a special ops NATO commander. In the previous entries you played as a U.S. Navy SEAL, in SOCOM 4, the SEALs are not even mentioned. Normally you have a list of commands to choose from in order to give your squad mates commands to successfully complete your mission. Sadly, in SOCOM 4 you are limited to only 3 commands which are regroup, eliminate target, and move to crosshairs. You don't even have crosshairs; you have a circle which expands the more you shoot, and decreases your accuracy.
The graphics in the game (especially in cut scenes) are very detailed, which adds realism to the game. The voice acting is nothing special. But don't fear, the cut scenes are usually very brief. The tactical aspect of the game has been taken out of the equation; it requires no stealth, and the objectives usually just go from point A to point B, with the exception of three missions set at night. The campaign is made up of 14 levels and is VERY short.
The online multiplayer is what SOCOM is known for and was built for. Sadly, it is not that great. You have the option to play the classic mode which is no respawn. It also has a lot of bugs; mostly every kill is a headshot. The game also is an over the shoulder third person shooter, but the over the shoulder aspect is sometimes very annoying. Your own head will tend to get in the way, and almost takes up the entire left side of the screen when in a confined space. In order to use the mic, you have to press up on the D pad, which can be very confusing for some players. SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs could have been much more.

  4. Frustrations aside, "SOCOM 4" is an intense and immensely satisfying tactical venture.

  5. SOCOM: Special Forces has tedious AI, bland level design and mission structure, but has great audio design and co-op.
