Or does it play like Dark/Demon's with stages and minions too?

Can't really tell from demo videos.

No real stages, more like a single area, but there are minions, as in minor Monsters

Have you ever actually played an MH? They're not boss-only.
  • Jan 10, 2013 8:07 pm GMT
So it's similar to God Eater?

    I prefer "Light"...

no, it's not similar, and this game is very far from MH

there are no map change, there's only a stage per mission, no map change in-mission

and it uses score system to determine your mission complete prize, you can break parts of the monster too though, to get items.

you have to defeat the bosses in smallest time possible to get better prizes ( but there are no time limit ), unlike MH where there are time limits.

Peace is a Lie, There is only Passion

    Through Passion, I Gain Strength

    Through Strength, I Gain Power

    Through Power, I Gain Victory

Through Victory, My chains are broken

    The Force shall free me

Weird responses in this topic. Halo is not like Monster Hunter. Final Fantasy is not like Monster Hunter. If any game is like Monster Hunter, its Soul Sacrifice. The flow is pretty much the same: you take a quest, you complete it, you're rewarded, and then you take a harder quest. There are unique mechanics, of course, such as the spell system, sacrifice system, and scoring, but the two are still similar; at the very least, SS draws a lot of influence from whatever genre MH is.

If any game is like MH, it's Hunter Blade. Carbon copy. This game doesn't really feel anything like MH, PSO, GE, or any other game in the genre. If you taking a quest, completing it, being rewarded, and then you taking a harder quest is the only reason for calling it similar then something like Need for Speed is similar as well. That's basic video game progression.

In MH, you feel like a hunter. You take on your mission and then traverse a decently sized map to hunt it down through various means such as traps, bait, etc. SS feels more like Malicious where you're only given a single arena and are required to take out your main target/s.

Shouldn't have to point out the obvious ways SS and MH are similar, its just that: obvious. The other games mentioned (God Eater, Phantasy Star) have some pretty distinct differences too, yet they're still undeniably similar to MH. Yes, I can take the most general comparison and say something absurd like 'Cooking Mama is s like SS since they're both video games', but that doesn't really help TC, now does it? Neither does over-examining minute differences between games of the same subgenre.

Bottom line, when someone asks if SS is like them, I don't see how anyone can say no.

I know right? They're both mission based hack and slash games where you take out giant monsters. If that's not enough to say they're similar, I don't know what is.

Well, being in the same genre alone already points out the fact that they are similar.

The feel of games in the same genre can be entirely different, though.

Yes I agree. My point the reasons you posted weren't exclusive to MH.

Because it honestly isn't. I'm not saying they don't have any similarities, as most games in a single genre surely will. From a gameplay standpoint, being a mission based hack and slash with monsters isn't enough for me to call them similar since countless games are like that. The mechanics that make this game unique give it a completely different feel. If you tell someone it's like MH, they're going to expect it to feel like MH.

Again, I know there are similarities, but can anyone honestly play the demo and say they felt like they were playing a Monster Hunter game?

Out of any game I could compare SS to for a newbie asking around, MH jumps out as the premier exemplar of the genre, both because they have a nearly identical game flow and because MH is the baseline title of the genre that practically everyone has played.

If this was a discussion between a group of vets then yes, SS and MH have a huge amount of differences. But to someone shopping around for a new title to play, those differences aren't readily apparent until you get into the meat of the game. OP asked "Is this game boss only like MH". That leads me to believe he's only looking for a surface answer, which in my opinion is 'Yes'

So it's pretty similar to MH then. What the hell are you on about.

I understand. I wasn't saying your opinion was wrong or anything. Just expressing mine as well, which just so happens to be the opposite.

Well, Monster Hunter and Dark Souls/Demon's Souls have some very strong similarities in playstyle, probably stronger than most people realise.

Attack timings, huge bosses, high difficulty, immunity frames on rolling, stamina bar, limited HP regeneration and carrying capacity, limited multiplayer...
