Hey there, GameSpotter true believers! My name is Chris Baker, and I'm one of the lucky few who do games stuff for Marvel. Yes, I even work on Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. For the next several weeks, I'm teaming up with our friends at Capcom to bring you an insider's perspective on how all of the alternate looks for characters were chosen in the game.

As we count down the days until UMVC3 launches in November, Marvel.com, Capcom Unity, and GameSpot are teaming up on Tuesdays and Fridays to show you the entire lineup of "fall fashions" for each of the 50 total playable characters. That's six total looks per fighter--not just four like last time--which are all available as soon as you boot up the game. Outside of actually downloading the playable characters of Shuma-Gorath and Jill Valentine, no downloadable content is required (though there might just be some of that on the way as well).

Just a couple of things to remember, though (and the words to follow should be pretty familiar if you caught my similar write-ups the first time around):

Gameplay comes first. The color scheme has to differ enough from the others to easily differentiate them in the heat of battle. The color scheme has to fit on the character model. For this reason, I hesitate to call these "alternate costumes" (although in some cases, they actually are alternates).

While we're doing lists, it's also good for you to know that there are essentially three classes of costumes this go-round, which I'll be pointing out:

Returning: They worked great for us last time. We're keeping 'em!

Updated: Because the idea to do this in the first place came relatively late in the development of MVC3, not every alternate was as close to the comics as it could have been (remembering rule two above, of course). We did what we could to make a few even better.

New: Because we're up from four to six now, every character has at least two of these. And probably more than you think will have more than that...

Beyond all that, I'm excited that you're not just hearing the Marvel side of the story this time. Though Capcom may lack 70 years and thousands upon thousands of comics to pore through for reference, you might be surprised at just how much thought went into its alternate color schemes as well.

And speaking of those write-ups, let's get started, shall we?

@hotdiddykong so you're saying that Capcom is using such one of the most anticipated fighting games franchise to test new styles? To realease a new concept in fighting games where you create a mess with super-humans and mutants fighting against lawyers, dogs, dinosaurs, a photographer, a flying huge head man that can barely move, a raccoon with a rocket launcher and all types of weird things.

No man, capcom has done it before. MvC2 had horrible characters too, BUT THEY WEREN'T MAJORITY OF THEM.

All the philosophy of bringing back characters long forgotten or introducing new series that are to be released sound perfect. But that's not how these things are decided, it's about marketting and publicity. Many of the new characters were in the recent movies, they're popular.

The other half of new characters are because the players have changed a bit, now most of them are 10 years old people that never heard or played the old versions. But they played Ace Attorney

Now you were wrong about one thing. MvC1 had only great characters (except Zangief), MvC2 when it was released it was said to contain all characters released since first game X-Men: Children of the Atom.

But my point is, the game will be fun, great graphics and all the stuff. But when it comes to serious versus fighting, choose these new characters and you're gonna get owned. The matches will be centered with the few good characters left on this game.

Possibly, but I can't remember an incident where the two have met. However, I do believe Howard would have been the better choice. For one, he's more well-known. For another, it would epically outshine the embarrassment that was his movie.

The segment on Rocket Raccoon had me thinking this:

Does Rocket Raccoon have the same inspiration as Howard the Duck? Do they happen to know each other, seeing that they are in the same Marvel universe(s)?

The new character's of Ultimate are mainly to play NEW styles and not just Punch a character till their beaten.
Ghost Rider, Strange, Phoenix Wright, and the others bring NEW tactics, they may seem off and difficult, but thats because their bringing new variety.
This is also connected a little to the other "Characters people want", they need to bring something new to the fighting game.

Now here's the problem, You dont know some of them, why should that effect anything? Marvel is technically just bringing people back from the dead who were near forgotten, Nova and Rocket Racoon, despite their appearences, coming from the Cosmic era, is actually a nice homage to the near forgotten cosmic series, its good to see them back.

Regarding Capcom, as said before, their main goal is to bring characters from their unique series. Not just all their fighting game series.
One more thing, MvC, and MvC2, NOBODY cared about who got in, I mean i didnt know more than half of the characters back then, but i played cause the system was what we loved. Why should people care now, besides the roster is split between Fan demand and new things.

I don't keep up with Capcom news everywhere, never heard of them saying sorry for selling a game that's more of a patch. They could have waited until next year and added even more content to this game, more stages, more modes, even more characters maybe. People could play their MvC3 for a longer period until they would be asking for a new version. Instead of making the actual version useless so quickly.

SNK vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter 3: 3rd strike, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 weren't all basically the same game re-released to fix bugs in a period of less than one year.

Sequels are great man. But when they introduce great upgrades over the original games.

I think they could have developed this better, without this rush to release something not finished, tested and with great content. But we were not even talking about this anymore here, we were discussing this character selection full of cartoonish characters that capcom love so much.

    @Spartan_1004

I agree with you man, you explain things imparcially and not emotionally like most here do. As I do sometimes because I am mad with the characters available here hahaha. Jon Talbain is also my favorite Character from Darkstalkers, although I believe Donovan is among top 5 best Fighting Characters Capcom has from all their games.

Ghost Rider is one character most requested on Capcom forums. And I think he is a perfect choice to be in the game (although it seems he sucks). There are perfect choices here too. the Devil May Cry characters are Perfect man. From Marvel again, Thor, Deadpool, Doctor Strange (another that probably sucks) are great to be in the Marvel vs Capcom series because they are important as Marvel characters. Even though they made Thor a horrible character compared to what he could have been.

Now wt* are all theses characters nobody has ever heard of? And these cartoon characters? This ruins the potential this game has as a great fighting game.

hahhahahahha nice one man, you're right bro. I'm convinced, the characters I wanted to play with sucks. You're arguments were the best here, just see all the negatives I get hahhha The best characters ever are MODOK, Viewtiful Joe, Arthur, Rocket Raccoon, Hagar and Phoenix Wright. In fact, I'll buy the game and I'll make them my main characters man. I think no one will beat me on-line with this team... imagine Phoenix Wright sueing people on-line, he rocks bro... I wonder why the new characters were not Anakaris, Roll, Servbot, Dhalsim, BB Hood. It would be the best game in the world hahahhahah Just like Capcom loves it, @hotdiddykong would love it.

you people are the skum of the earth i swear

even after they have given you the reason why they are doing it, even after they said they where sorry you guys continue to b**** and complain honestly i'm happy for the game cause Upgrades are alaways better then the origional game (see any WoW expansion, SNK vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter 3: 3rd strike, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, etc.) and this a discounted price then if it WAS DLC (as DLC at $5 per character it's $60 alone then consider you're getting new colors, and gameplay changes and it's even more expensive)

plus do you relly think that they just put all of this out seperatly just because they want more money BULL, Capcom added these afterwards cause they couldn't get those things in and/or didn't think of them before the origional's release and to think otherwise is childish and assinine

now think about this next time you think about spoiling us sensable peoples hype for a game you f-in twerps

    @LastRambo341 @hotdiddykong
I Applaud you for supporting MvC but you have to know people complain about one thing or another. If they brought back the old characters without new ones they would complain, All new, complain about lack of old ones. Bring out many characters to appease people and have little variety, complain. Just look at how people have complained about other fighting games. The developers can't make everyone happy, but dang it I'm glad they made me happy.
I was once told a story about a father, son and they're donkey (yes I'm hispanic). Boy rides on donkey= people call him lazy for not letting the old father ride it. Father rides on donkey= people say he is greedy for not letting his young son ride it. Both ride on the donkey= people say poor donkey. Neither ride on it= people say waste of a donkey. In the end screw the people who keep complaining.

@M_Splinter I agree with you that some character in MvC3 aren't exactly the ones I would choose like Modok and Wright, but if they were to bring in the "best" characters as you put it, wouldn't it just fall short of MvC2. I like it that they didn't fill the game with all street fighter and x-men characters. They finally brought out Ghost Rider, I was hoping for him after the first MvC. Also going on what hotdiddykong said, you have to think of the move sets. They are trying to bring diversity to the characters. With Darkstalkers I'm still hoping for Jon Talbain. I played Darkstalkers in the arcade and he was my favorite. Also in the cartoons. Give it time and I'm sure they will bring some of the favorites back.
