Pirates of the Burning Sea

Publisher: Koch Media
Developer: Flying Lab Software
Platform: PC
Release Date: Jan 22, 2008

Anyone could have taken the typical massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) template, stuck pirates in it, and called it a day. But developer Flying Lab Software looks like it will combine playability with depth in Pirates of the Burning Sea, and the result is a fascinating take on 18th-century Caribbean exploits.

We take a look at the game on our stage, yarr!

But let's break it down. First, you have all the flamboyant swashbuckling you'd expect in a game with pirates, and as such you can use a variety of sword techniques to bring your enemies to their knees. Then you have ship-to-ship combat, which takes a tactical approach and forces you to consider factors like ship speed, wind direction, and cannon facing. But what fascinates us most is the complex player-versus-player game, in which you earn your nation "unrest points" by doing underhanded things like delivering supplies to local rebels. Making enough waves results in a huge nation vs. nation battle in which only the fittest survive.

Consider that the game will also have an intricate supply-chain economy reminiscent of EVE Online, and you have a potential winner when this game sets sail for retail this year. It's already the most impressive MMORPG at E3.
