If it ever happens that you're no longer fixated by rattle toys and teletubies you'll very likely also drop this pile of $#!£ insult to ST license and play EVE online: Real space faring MMO.

i really got to agree with The_Rook. i played this when it first came out and got so bored i quit after a few days. when it went free to play i thought i'd see it again. i tried to play my original character but forgot how to play so made a newbie and replied the tutorial. the game is massivly improved, i remember the skills used to say somthing like "increases dencity in warp reactor to increase plasma torrents" now they basically say "increases weapon damage" its not an easy game to pick up from new but im learning and its going cool and im enjoying it unlike the first time >.>

I've been enjoying the hell out of this game. It's been improved so much since beta. I'm so glad it went f2p or I never would have tried it again.

The game has made huge leaps and bounds since release and is worth a second look. The upcoming Free-To-Play model will bring in many players who want to see the new improvements.

Going to be F2P (Silver Membership) toward the end of 2011, so a great chance to see the game as it has evolved. Really needs to be re-reviewed when it does go F2P, considering the updates and evolution.

Real annoying that you referred to Star Trek fans as "Trekkies", when it's been said over and over again that "Trekker" is the preferred name.

Shame. I love the source mettirial. I would have bought this. But this review and the monthly fees made it so I didn't.

Played the demo twice damn it's fun going to pick this one up for sure in a few days. Just love the fact it has both space combat and land missions, both are great to play and I never get tired of the sound effects (phasers, energizer, and the best photon torpedos) just wish it was full voice over for all npcs. Hopefully this game will live long and prosper.

Playing it now, and while I certainly understand the birth pangs, the game is shaping up very nicely for casual MMO gamers...or should be. Some of the missions are just so difficult and there is little excpanation as to how to level-up or plan out your career. A Strategy Guide (an official one) is required, but not available.

We need a Star Trek game in the roleplaying genre, like Knights of the Old Republic. But as we don;t get deep RPG's any more, that ain't gonna happen is it?!

Star Trek is a great franchise, except when you dive into the gaming sector. Fact of the matter is, they make WAY too many space combat simulators for Star Trek, with narration voices and no character. Star Trek, however beautiful the ships may be, has always been about something different. It's about all the different people, how they act in tough situations. Honestly, I think Star Trek needs another First Person Shooter like Elite Force. That game was amazing back in the day, because it was fun, challenging, and the characters were people you fell in love with, and actually felt bad if they died.

I have been playing STO for two months now and I have to agree with the video review. I am a trekkie and I love the space combat, but the game is thin and I'm really hoping Cryptic can bring more to the table.

Is it possible the game has been simplified assuming that Star Trek fans skew older and the hope to introduce them to an online RPG game?

@J3ST3R_17 theres already plenty of good, solid and infact excellent star trek games on the pc, such as bridge commander, starfleet command 1 - 3, elite force (if you can live with the focus on action) though they are a bit awkward to get hold of as recent they are worth checking out there are more, but off the top of my head I cant recall them

One thing that sets this MMO apart from any other Ive ever played.....I hit the level cap before the 30 day subscription that came with the game expired......now I cant find anything to do in the game that I havent done 100 times already.....I REALLY wanted to love this game and while theres some fun in it.....it dont hold up as an MMO =/

J3ST3R_17

Not sure if we'll ever get a really good Star Trek game until we actually invent the Holodeck. *That* is when you'll really be able to get a solid Trek experience. Hope I'm still alive by then.

We hear that alot these days really good games that turn out to be utter crap reminds me of breed and devastation promised so much delivered so little

Baelzar
Baelzar

Such potential, wasted! Cryptic is really churning out the crap these days. Perhaps their business model is successful; get the game out and reap the initial sales, then gut the team and move on to the next game.

penpusher

@darshie76 no ones really disagreeing with you too much, Yes its much the same formula as world of warcraft ...and thats part of the problem it did work for WOW but for STO it just doesnt work, this isnt a kill orcs and demons ( or play as them) adventure this is star trek, bashing at the space bar to fire all phasers and the only importance in manouvering being to keep your shields safe, is not enough for star trek

darshie76
darshie76

2) the total absence of exploration, that is the key of ST....not as missions like go there, meet X or Y and solve their problems, but as GTA, where you have an area, your tools and explore! scan an area, if there are life forms go down and check....first contact, learn, explore....fight maybe; but all the episodes were ever watched at cryptic when they decided to make this game? or was a frikkin marketing guy taht sat with the programmers and decided what has to be coded? anyway, if you like it just play it for what it is; if you don't no big deal, you would not buy it anyway even before, since many were complaining since the closed beta :) Is just like many said, a missed opportunity, but please stop to say that is boring compared to other MMORPG because we still play enriched versions of Ultima online and DAOC, so whatever is in this game, is also in any other game where millions of people play...just be coherent and say that doesn't appeal to you (liike EVE does not appeal to me, but is a good example of how this game should have been). No offense everyone, you see it as you think fit for you, i have just expressed my view

darshie76

Now, after reading so many comments, i would like to hear from who says that this game is not interesting, to give me examples of what it is in other games, that is not in this one. I actually play WOW, LOTRO and STO; 3 days a week one at time, for about 7-8 hours a day...and each of them gets old after playing a bit! LOTRO: go from a to b, find fellows to complete a quest with elite (place flags, steal boxes, disable weapons, etc), grind monsters to get silver to repair your equipment, prospect (since is the fastest way to make money), craft. WOW: as above, just add flying here and there, hyper final content quests and raids, get a new pet STO: as above, minus crafting, change money in engineriing credits, change harvesting with analyzing space anomaly what is left is the core game that we are playing since ultima online; but maybe you never realized it because the graphic is too shiny that looks better than what it is. again, the game is not so different from the others; what Cryptic missed was 2 big things: 1) the frikkin bridge, because i wanna sit in my chair and command as a commander, even if i gotta push all the frikkin buttons and do all by myself, so at least let me have the feeling of commanding! TBC.....

@bloody-hell Yes like I said "MY OPINION" like you assuming I'm a kid or have limited experience in games to enjoy MW2, in fact I've been gaming for sh*$ probably 15 years now way back to nintendo and sega when they were the main console makers. So yea you're comment is way off, In fact I still believe you're probably just bad at the game so u don't like it. They added stat tracking which easily shows skill lvl, go ahead and list your KD and overall kills, theirs no need to try and convince me just let the stats do the talking, and also please try not to stray away from you obtuse comment that infinity ward payed off the reviews, I sure would like to see some palpable evidence of that and not some brash comment.

Playing this during the closed and open beta was just horrid...they took an great ip and watered it down... Honestly i was looking forward to making first contacts and exploring the vastness of space not kill x number of ship missions and flying around in what looked like a shoe box with stars painted on the walls...

They Hit the NailOn the HEAD here. MMo = Deep gameplay. This is not. This is easy fast gameplay,.this is super simple pick up and play. As it stands this could have been a single player game design with multiplayer peer to peer thrown in. Only if someone like Bio Ware had done it it would have had better content. And prob'ly deeper gameplay. So even on that level its a fail. The mechanics are so shallow that they can be mastered in few days. For some people this is a plus, for me its not. Like I say if your paying on a ongoing basis you want more depth and challange that forces you and your buddies to adapt and band together in a universe that after months of playing still holds new ways of doing things,Forcing you to have to explore and find those avenues. This ISN'T that game. Hopefully Cryptic will add more depth to the mechanics as different ships are added and the skillset is expanded, but lets face it the bar has been set low to make it easy pick up and play.MMO's are not simple pick up and play. Doing that is like setting the Phasers to STUN. If this was a BEER it would be a LiteBeer, actually it wouldn't be. It would be a Shandy , a realy watered down Shandy. But then some people like Shandy . But for me I want my beer to taste like BEER ;)

Why this publisher (Atari) not consistent making a good games? come on!! you've got a better IPs, like: Fahrenheit, The Witcher, X3, Alone In The Dark, Neverwinter Nights, make the sequel..for that titles.. moron!!! :( this MMO IP would never touch World Of WarCraft... be yourself.... don't follow the waves...

bloody-hell

@JimmyJimJim - And you don't take no assumptions either. It would be childish of me to try to convince you of whether I'm good at game X or not and would not lead to anything, so think what you want. I rated MW2 very low simply because it's all been there before and it's not what I understand of a good game. (They are just milking the series dry as long as they can with the same unrealistic arcade stuff again and again only to try to satisfy the "kiddy" masses). Tastes are different, so you go with your 9.0, but to me that is a rating only a blind believer or young person with limited gaming experience would give. (just like those giving STO a rating of more than 6.0) Again, if you want to continue the MW2 talk, stick to PMs with me or open a Topic on the MW2 forums section - this is the STO area and we're kind of cluttering it up with this Off-Topic talk about why MW2 received such a high rating.

JimmyJimJim
JimmyJimJim

@bloody-hell Again that's "YOUR OWN" bigoted statement, and until you have any proof that it's the reason it got rated so high then it's completely obtuse and moot. I love the game and consider it a 9.0 at least. You probably just suck at it so decided to make up brash allegations for why it got rated so high.

This reviews totally right. Who would want to play an MMO thats actually entertaining? MMOs are supposed to be long endless grinds of point and click combat and quests that consist of meaningless monotonus tasks. The NPC characters in other MMOs don't need to be smart because all they do is swing a sword back and forth. At least these ones you can comand by positioning them and setting traps for your enemys. And Crusendor was completely right with what he said. The guy doin the review never got out of the low levels which is meant to be easy. And I will admit the ground combat could be alot better.

shunokoutsuki
shunokoutsuki

I have to say although it's kinda harsh on points, this review is dead on. Content is too shallow, this is one major draw back. and ground mission is one big pain in the butt: AI is dumb to an extreme... and overall too easy. at first it maybe fun when it's fresh, but after a while it lacks the element to make one keep playing. Cryptic recently released an survey, ask players what they think about to improve... ha right, almost everything needs to. and yeah, i did give them a piece of my mind. I hope they can pull it offline or F2P for a while and re-launch it

Snaptrap
Snaptrap

This should be a F2P MMO. There's nothing here that appeals to die hard fans unless you like simplicity. I didn't expect much in the first place since it comes from Cryptic and none of their games are serious approaches at this genre.
