I started to play SWTOR in December 2011. Imo, the game is really great but it lacked many basic features and there were way too many (225) servers at launch. The result was that the total population was too much scattered.

We waited it for a long time but finally on June 12th 2012, Bioware will start to merge many server populations together to end up with only heavily populated servers. That means that if you'll try the game in the upcoming weeks, you'll always join a thriving community no matter which server you'll choose!

Also, Update 1.3 will be launched toward the end of June 2012 with many great features and additions (ranked warzones, engine optimization, lfg tool, adaptive social gear, new schematics, augment tables, universal GTN).

So, if you'd like to try SWTOR, now is the perfect time!
