Carolyn embarks on an epic journey when Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP makes its way to the PC in this video review.
Take a god damned art class you culture lacking barbarians. This game looks miraculous. How many designers have you seen with this style of art? Why did Super Meat Boy get so much attention? Why did Castle Crashers? You people know nothing of quality. Go play Call of Duty, this genre is too complex for you good riddance.
I dont know why but this review brought back memories of playing Ico the first time....I need to play that one again. =)
So what did I get from that review? It's pretty, has good music, and attention to details. ...Does that mean it gets a 9 just for that? or did I miss some stuff? Doesn't seem like a great video review.
MW has great graphics, but 2D gameplay and a story worse than an 80s Stallone movie. For those of us with a little maturity (and I unfortunately remember thinking Jet Set Willy had great graphics) we prefer more of a multi faceted approach to gaming than basing everything on graphics graphics graphics. Maybe a 9 is too high, but guess what, reviews are subjective, at least the score does show the potential of the game. What is a joke is the big budget games like MW3 releasing a £40 map pack each year, passing it off as a full game, forcing the games sites to review it well or they'll remove advertising and convincing teenage muppets into thinking it's manna from heaven. More people buy Coke than single malt, but who really thinks that sales equates to quality? Talking like a naive troll makes you look like a fool, utterly lacking in the knowledge to back up your opinion.
@blighter i like how you think, graphics isn't everything, id rather play a lame thas has decent graphics but excellent gameplay and stunning storyline than that of the opposite,.
I don't know who was stoned more the people who made this game or the person who reviewed the game. Graphics aren't everything but this game looks lame. Epic battles...really?
I always like to check out the video reviews for all of the games that score 8.5 or higher. Upon seeing this review however, I'm scratching my head trying to figure it out. This game does not strike me as "beautiful" or "visually stunning," which pixel is everyone looking at anyway? The main character is a warrior monk? They must tell you that since there's no way you'd ever figure it out by looking at "her".
The music sounds fair and I'm sure that it will win awards for Indie game of the year or some crap. The gameplay would have to absolutely blow me away for me to play this and I highly doubt that it would based on the video review. It also leaves me hesitant about the authenticity of the reviewers' opinions on this site. It certainly does seem like someone is either a rabid fan or a mother of one of the individuals at the studio that came out with this one. A game only a mother could love...
This was my initial reaction after watching the video review.
Well, apparently some people think that we are in the 1980's. ATARI is dead for a reason. This is the equivalent of taking out a fat and ugly chick on a date and basing everything on her personality.
Fact, it is the year 2012, games look better and better and humans are very visual creatures. This game offers very little. The reviewer says the archetype has a "cigar"...this is very subjective, it does look like 2 pixels. It could be a pipe for all we know. Needless to say, I bet that all the people that loved this game have rotary dial phones at home along with LP players on top of counters covered in formica. Retro is for some, not all. Now we all know who's buying all those crappy ATARI and NES games on eBay.
It may have its merits, sure as hell doesn't deserve a 9/10. Really, a 9? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
((GAG/DRY HEAVE))
@darkstorm2k7 The details is high for a pixilated game. It's retro and beautifull. Of course you are allowed to think otherwise, but I will recommend for you own experience you go and try the the game and for the sake of it that you expect something other than "extreme mainstream" graphics and gameplay. Many have written great reviews about it before I and in a much better way. I will stick to stating: I LOVE this game. Full stop.
This game is beautiful. Yes it's 2D and a bit of a throwback but it's an INDIE game. It makes me sad to see some people can't grasp the concept of art and the amount of effort that goes behind stylizing a game like this. Naive.
So, people who don't agree with your interpretation are "naive"? Thats' called arrogance.
@Clovergirl227 @Copic22 Actually, slating a game you've not played is arrogant. Basing such a strong opinion on superficial experience is naive, as it shows a lack of depth.
@Dark moon...really????!!!!. This game is epic crap. I could not bear to look at the entire review not to mention buying the game. Rating by graphics?? Well not 100% but still just for some music and a stupid story, i would not play this...can;t even categorize it. Carolyn is impressed by "details". OMG what details??!!! a few almost random pixels. Anyway like someone said before, Gamespot must be paid to promote such crap. User review (6.2) says it all. I would give it a -10 if i could. Peace!
really guys??? you are rating a game by his graphics??? how lame... you're just listening to the society .. you have no imagination!!! lets see if you can make a better game .. come on I dubble dare you to make one better than this... If you are such experts in games...
This game is on HumbleBundle(dot)com for the next week along with Limbo, Bastion, Psychonauts, and Super Meat Boy.
Yeah I don't think people realize indie games are made by like 1-5 people on a budget in the thousands on dollars. Not exactly Battlefield 3 with a team of 500 for $100+ million in production and advertising. Probably gonna end up with 2D graphics with that disparity.
Simple yet immersive game that captivated me throughout the entire adventure, whilst I liked this review, I still felt it slightly lacked the justice it deserved, the kind of justice that you have to play yourself to understand, this gaming bliss.
I read these comments and it makes clear to me why there are so many problems with video game development today.
Just from the this review and the footage, this looks like an artistic and atmospheric triumph to me.
As someone who appreciates all facets of gaming - from kill streaks to casting Mudoon - I'm a little embarrassed I haven't seen this one until now.
I read many comlains about the graphics. A game is not all about graphics. NOT AT ALL! A deep story, engaging gameplay, and last but not least - the playersi magination make a game what it is. where is the fun if everything is allreaydy before your eyes. when the graphics are just a guidence for the palyer, everyone could imagine and feel the world differently from the others. stop being so shortsighted!
reading some of these comments i would wager a lot of money that the average age of posters is about... 12 or 13...? there is something wrong with the world of gaming when people can't look past the graphical interface to try and determine how good a game is. all you little kids can run back to your games with great graphics and no soul, i have no problem with you not playing great games that you don't enjoy due to the graphics not being state of the art, but in doing so, please leave your little boy and girl comments to yourself, if we want comic relief we'll hunt you down and ask for your opinions...
@bmorgan303 Take in consideration bro that this is a indie game, comparing it to a big release such as Diablo 3 is unnecessary. When a game such as this receives a 9 (which coming from experience it deserves it ) its not out there to compete with releases such as Diablo 3, but more likely games such as Limbo or Bastion. So when Carolyn reviewed this game, he scored it as a indie game, not a major hit title.
These comments are pretty infuriating. This review made me want to consider this game, it looks really cool. The music sounds amazing and I quite like the look. I don't understand people complaining about "bad graphics". Theres no rule that says a good game has to use the latest graphics techniques. Clearly the game makers were going for a certain look, and in my opinion its a good look.
Idiots talking about graphics, youre all 8 year old kids who knows nothing but graphics, you'll never know what a good game is made of
At the VERY LEAST, a game should have good graphics. That's the VERY LEAST I expect from a game. Give me good graphics, and now we can talk about all the other stuff that makes a game truly epic. This game here doesn't even deliver the VERY LEAST we should expect from a game. Truly an epic fail.
Are you kidding me? Look at those graphics. I wouldn't play this game if you gave it to me for free.
I agree but really if this guy thanks it's 9.0 then so be it there is no doubt that it's not rock star and it's not max payne 3. I cant get over how dorky Carolyn sounds.
I don't want to hear people trying to defend this game. I mean, really?!?!? A 9.0 editor's choice? Can someone say paid off? This is a classic example of why gamespot is really losing their spot amongst my gaming review sites. These gamer companies know their games are crap, so they pay sites like gamespot to beef up their "meta scores" and bam! Everyone runs out to buy it. I call bullshit... The only score that matters up there is the user score. Read it and weep. NEXT!
@trombonedude13 i doubt they payed for that score considering they are a indie developer and dont have the money to pay for a high score
This game isn't for everyone. It does deserve a 10 in my opinion, there's more behind this game then the majority of games released today. Anyone who disagrees either hasn't played it, or doesn't enjoy adventure games.
I guess people loves to judge a game without even playing it, hence the user score
Please tell me this crap wasn't made in America. We have a bad enough rep as is...
Pathetic attempt at bringing back 1980's graphics...
Seriously....I mean....Seriously, gamespot you guys are stupid for even putting this game on your website.
@Matchews a video game review site is stupid for reviewing a video game? yet here is someone who is critiquing a game without playing it? and doing so purely by its graphics? nice one bud...
This has to be the most idiotic review ever. A 9???? R u kidding me? "the gameplay is simple, the puzzles are easy" she says. The visuals and art design are clearly dated. yet you give it a 9 on par with skyrim? Give me a break. This is like someone trying really hard to prove that they see the deep and meaningful parts of a video game other superficial people don't. Accept it, through improved technology the game developers are able to express more in games these days than they were before, let you do more, immerse you into the game more. You have to rate the games gameplay and puzzles and visuals to today's standard. Not some foregone era to prove how you get deep and meaningful your understanding of videogames is. pathetic review
9.0 Gamespot, 89 Metacritic, and 6.2 from the only people that matter... the gamers.
Why the discrepancy?
@thedemon44 because critics aren't sadly comprised of a vast majority of 12 year old prepubescant boys like the gaming community is these days...
@thedemon44 I haven't played the game yet but , as we know, the internet is full of mindless drones. So it's safe to assume that those same mindless drones are giving it low scores.Once I play the game I will give my opinion.
@thedemon44 If asked, these same "gamers" would almost certainly say that Transformers is a better movie than The Artist. Does that make it true?
Looks so ODD its COOL! Different and innovative! Something lacking in games today...

You really can't defend a point which some people just don't understand. It's frustrating and frivolous. I've read the comments on this review and I felt like laughing. "Kids these days" is all that came to mind, harping on about good graphics this, good graphics that and how this game hasn't any, bad graphics they say. There are more to games than just graphics and the really truly awesome games show you that. Story telling is where it all starts for me, then gameplay n then the visual treat. I'd still go back to monkey island today cause that was just awesome! @#$% the graphics. Bad graphics are game developers trying to achieve something visually and failing, in this game they went for a certain visual style and just nailed it, got it bang on. I feel bad for those who don't see that or understand that. And if, like the reviewer says, the game has an awesome story and gameplay its 9 well deserved points.
I do believe that visual design is very important to games. However, graphics don't have to be technically mind-blowing or photo-realistic to be good. As you say, this game has a wonderfully artistic visual design, and thus looks great.
Some people are too concerned about how up-to-date a game's graphics are. Other people make the mistake of saying graphics are not important. Graphics are important, and that includes visual design, presentation, interface, atmosphere, etc., which are vital. However, there are different approaches to having good graphics/visual design, and this game definitely succeeds.
@nmt326 The game play looks lame to you click on a sword and shield emblem to fight. if graphics don't matter then how about an awesome graphic novel minus the graphics as you make your way as the character called dotty..In ode to pong you play as the magical white dot in a sea of darkness.
@mabisking Lol, dude it's quite simple. From the styling you can see that this is a tribute to classic games, that was the game developers choice. That move is obviously gonna split the gaming world in half, see for half of the gamers who're from the era of Monkey Island and Kings Quest and all o those classic point n click games, this game, this style has significance, it gives something and it brings back something that you might not understand unless you've experienced it before. See if I said right now that I was making a guitar as a tribute to david gilmour and you didn't know who he was you wouldn't really understand the tribute.
So all I'm saying is this game's visual style is a tribute, something they wanted to do, it was NOT a mistake, it was NOT the result of lazy developers, the style is the same and it is uniform, unique and exactly what they were aiming for. As these comments show you there's a great chance people will not understand what they were aiming for so kudos to them for still sticking to it and going through with it.. If you don't understand it I'm not gonna try and make you, its your opinion I'll respect it, let it be and move on with your life, but also try and respect the opinion of a LOT of people who actually do understand this game, including the developers and the numerous reviewers.
