- The Bottom Line:
- "Total letdown"
The poor quality of this game is just impossible to ignore. A few minutes into the game and it becomes apparent how aspects of the game clashes horribly. You have cartoon-colored units on realistic looking terrain and wildly fantasy-looking maps in this game's serious setting. It's like the graphics were made by different companies and hacked together without any thought.
The game mechanics are even worse. The new fluid movement system may take less computer resources, but it just looks absurd when your tank pushes another blocking tank forward when it moves. All pathfinding seems to have been removed because units often get stuck on any path that's not a straight line. And for some reason, if units are blocking a new building, it takes them forever to move out of the way.
As for the gameplay, it's clearly closer to that of Demigod than the original supcom. The maps are smaller with long, narrow bridges like those of Demigod and the unit cap has been downgraded. As a result, the focus has completely shifted from long-term strategy to lots of small skirmishes. The research tree may have been a good idea for long games, but, with the shorter games, certain branches are clearly better than others.
Usually sequels aren't better than the original, but this game is just so much worse. I suspect that the developers didn't put too much thought into designing this game, because it just does not feel like a supcom sequel.
