We get our hands on Namco's PlayStation 3 version of its arcade brawler.
Namco took the wraps off the PlayStation 3 version of Tekken 6 at its press event yesterday. Sadly, we were taunted by what appeared to be a fully playable roster of fighters in the demo. While we would have liked to try out all the fighters, we were limited to just four--Jin, Kazuya, Bob, and Zafina--by a Namco rep monitoring the demo.
We had a chance to try out some versus matches with the modest roster of sanctioned fighters and are happy to report that, yep, this is Tekken 6. To be more specific, this is a tricked-out Tekken 6. Since Tekken 6 was first announced, the original arcade game has seen some revisions, culminating in the meaty expansion dubbed Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion, all of which will be incorporated into the home version of the game. The result is that fans can expect all of the arcade content in addition to new modes and items to trick out their characters. Best of all, it sounds like the system for unlocking the characters in the roster is being tweaked to be more accessible. In addition, Tekken 6 will feature online play, although we weren't able to try it. The game handled fine with the PlayStation 3 controller, and the fighting system felt comfortable and responsive.
The visuals in the work-in-progress game are coming together well. At first blush the game looks just about on par with the arcade game, but a closer look shows that it's still in need of some polish here and there with background elements and some of the special effects. We expect Tekken 6 to be good and shiny when it ships later this year.
While it has been a long time coming, Tekken 6 is looking just fine. The graphics are almost on par with the arcade game, the control is responsive, and there seems to be plenty of content being packed into the console versions. Fighting fans will want to keep an eye out for the game when it ships later this year for the PlayStation 3, PSP, and Xbox 360.
2 signs of the apocalypse: tekken no longer a sony exclusive, and the gimmick weapons. why the hell would i wanna call penguins to attack my enemies!?! what is this lego's virtua fighter?(you heard that here first!) don't make a title i've followed for over 10 years this watered down kiddie crap!
I'll be getting this for PSP and PS3... And Soul Calibur Broken Destiny.... It's going to be a good year.
Too bad they're not planning on an online mode for the PSP. The adhoc (or game-sharing) battles on DR are pretty awesome on the PSP...was really looking forward to true online in Tekken6 :(
"Chaos_Bladez Posted May 6, 2009 7:00 pm PT I'm gonna be dumb and totally buy the PS3 and PSP versions..." You and me both, brother. It will allow me to play Tekken 6 at work!
oh they said there'd be exclusive psp characters, I hope they don't charge 5$ for each later as dlc for 360 and ps3
oooh wow, he's wearing that same Tap Out shirt as everyone else. Way to keep it original guy. Oh well, kinda excited for this game. Tekken are really the only games i like to play that are like this....1v1 arcade fighting style.
(also, I love how the guy is trying to explain why they didnt put online on the PSP version. lmao) uh uh uh, because, uh, delay, um, timing, uh... ha
dear neoman. I was not just referring to you and as it seems that your this annoyed i guess i hit the button on the mash mash crouch mash thing. anyway tekken does have an ability to make its players think they are good at it. If we had the opportunity to fight then maybe you'd be more enlightened hahahaha. sorry this is too fun :D
da2x did I ever play with you? did I say I play with eddie and christie? did I let out any of my playing methods? what gives me the right is my right to state an opinion, but you don't have the right or any basis to your statements, just go to your forums annoy people, cause I don't know you if you read my comment below, where I say "I'm done with people like YOU." okay? can we part ways now? or are you too attached?
dear neoman. sorry but there are no good tekken players urm cant really say it coz, crush.bound,jazframe. you dont know the intelligent part of tekken. eddy? christie? f mash 2 kick? b mash 2 kick? this little nook of tekken community you seem to exist in is not the "world" the rest of us do. what gives you the right to ostracize and lower the games standard to yours is nothing... you don't play tekken you play mash mash crouch crouch grab die nice review !
I have always been a fan of Street fighter, virtua fighter, whatever.... anything BUT Tekken... up until now I didn't even care for this game, but it is looking pretty awesome. I am so happy fighting games are gaining steam again. I got my arcade stick ready. Lets get some fights going!
now that I look down at these comments...there seems to be a connection between fighting games and people verbally fighting...just kidding, at least there hasn't been too much ps3 vs 360 blah blah here. lets take it easy on each other! @belzebuvlad I couldn't agree more with your sf4 review!
@anonymous06 Is that so?? So...you are one of those Tekken blind fan boys.... because if it was aux contraire mon sieur you hadn't mentioned my name. You should grow up and learn to read before comment. And btw, you should read my SF4 review... Hasta la pasta amigo!
@ne0man Sure, $15 is a steal and i never played the dreamcast version. About Tekken 5... that alternative mode with jin was a bad idea. I enjoyed Tekken Force on Tekken 4, but it's just a complement, i want to see the real thing. Jinpachi was really annoying, and Azazel should be even more... I thought that this could be the fighting games year. But Street Fighter 4 disappointed me a bit in the single player aspect. But hopefully Blaz Blue and KOF XII will be good. And MvC 2, oh... i'll have to buy a arcade stick. It's too expensive here... aw... my pocket.
@anonymous06 thats exactly what i'm feeling man, I think that from tekken tag to tekken 4 they tried to stray from the formula a bit and though I liked it anyway I was hoping for a better sequel, but Tekken5, even with so many characters and customization and the devil jin beat em up, and the 3 first arcade tekken games,tekken5 felt too familiar, and besides returning characters there was nothing REALLY new. And jinpachi was an annoying final boss. and I don't like the breaking walls and ground thing, looks like DoA, and I'm not too fond of it. and hey MvC 2, thats what I'm looking forward to as well! and for 15$ which is a ridiculous price when you consider the amount of money people were selling it on ebay. If we don't see each other online on Tekken6 I hope to see you on mvc2! :)
@ne0man I partially agree. Taking in count that the franchise have 15 years, they really should innovate with something besides some new tricks. But that won't prevent me from buying and enjoy the game.
Bashing?? how come constructive criticism is considered by you as bashing? and how come you can now judge how well I play Tekken? I bet you couldn't be civilized if you tried, and I'm sorry I somehow offended you indirectly by stating my opinion and standing for it on this shoutbox
@ne0man You must be pretty bad on this kind of game for bashing it like this. The game looks great. If you play it as a casual player, then it's not for you. Sorry.
dear da2x, by simple I mean, who cares about extra mini games and customization if the main game isn't appealing enough? also presumptuous enough aren't you? who do you think you are to tell me I should give up the game? an Intelligent game? about pressing buttons, no more than any 3d fighting game I assure you. also if I'm not a real tekken player, neither are you, cause the true players are the first to realise that the series either evolves or it dies. enough of sequels with flash but no substance. and I'm done here with people like you
@neoman. i think its funny you said that tekken needs less characters and jin needs a more complicated move set and namco should keep it simple. ive yet too see a real tekken player comment here at gamespot. well my point is if your playing more with AI or with people just like you then just give up the game. and if you even think jin needs time to master well all the characters do. Its comments like this that gives a novice away.. you just have to understand that this is an Intelligent game. and i understand that you dont.
Tekken has allways been first and foremost about the incredible gameplay and depth it has to offer, second comes the amazing characters and storyline, third i would say great graphics and animation even though tekken has allways had great graphics and animation since tekken1.
