Well if you want to go a battle mage route http://skyrimcalculator.com/172278 is what I came up with as a build.

Well, assuming your going to use the core skills of light armor, destruction, one-handed, crafting skills (alchemy & smithing), and alteration.

    Things to avoid:
    heavy armor
    archery
    conjuration
    illusion
    two-handed
    block

That's just my thinking. Augment as needed.

I can understand block, 2handed, and archery, but why should he avoid the other 3?

For armor, you want light material. If you're worried about armor rating, you should be able to supplement it with alteration spells, plus moving faster and retaining more stamina. I say to avoid illusions and conjuration just to keep your magic focus up. It wouldn't, in truth, be bad at all to be able to call on a pet, so I should probably not have included conjuration in that mix.

Battle mages tend to use a mix of one and two handed weapons and use heavy armor, they also use all schools of magic focusing on destruction, enchants, and conjuration. Also some smithing

Now what they are trying to sell you on is a spellsword, which is basically the same thing except they use light armor and focus on one hand and destruction more than anything, then some resto. The latter might be easier to manage not having to balance out two handed and more complicated schools of magic so go spellsword.

Ya, with mine you can take out the 1h perks and put some con/illusion into the mix instead. I havn't started this char yet but can always edit the build.

The truth is no, though I find the perks for light armor much more beneficial. Also, it's important to note that the speed aspect of the heavy vs light armor is removed with a perk.

Off-topic: Anyone know if they ever patched the max armor benefit? Last I read it was around 536 or something like that, as in any rating over 536 (i.e. 700) would still only give the damage reduction of 536.
