Day 70. My First Mammoth Part I

Now that I am well rested I intend to begin my quest to defeat the saber-cat, bear, and mammoth spirit guardians. I look at my map and the places on it that Froki marked. The most efficient path to take would be to take out the saber-cat just outside Winterhold, backtrack to the Nightgate Inn and take the road to the northern border of Whiterun to take on the mammoth, and then circle around (avoiding Whiterun and the Companions) to the pine forest of Falkreath for the bear.

The first trek of the journey to Winterhold is absolutely uneventful. The most interesting thing I did was pick a bushel of blue mountain flowers which literally seem to grow everywhere. By noon I reached Winterhold, but I did not stop at the inn for lunch since I ate a horker stew on the road. Going off road I see a stranded horker next to a ledge near the location of the guardian saber-cat. I launch a few arrows at it which send its carcass over the ledge. With the unintentional bait set I climbed down a gentler slope that ended at an icy river. The bait has worked, but only attracted a pair of ice wolves. Silently I take them out with my bow, but not silently enough since the attack altered the spirit guardian. I was able to loose one arrow into its head before it pounced on me, knocking the wind out. I back off across the frozen stream to catch my breath and ready my shield and axe. This buys me enough time to take in a much needed healing potion and I launched my own attack against the ghostly predator. Better able to defend myself and attack it soon falls.

As planned I backtrack to the Nightgate Inn and keep going down a new road towards Whiterun. Upahead I see what could only be a court jester next to a broken wagon. I ask him if he needs help and almost hysterical he tells me his name is Cicero and that he how he was moving his dead mother to a new tomb when the wagon broke. He then asks if I can go to the nearby farm to ask for help while he guards the wagon and its contents. I felt bad for him. I left Hammerfell for Skyrim when my own mother had passed; I walked up to the farm and introduced myself.

Day 70. My First Mammoth Part II

The farmer said he wouldn’t help Cicero even though the jester had been up to ask five times already. Surely this simple farmer couldn’t be so cruel. I let my thoughts become words and find out the farmer thinks Cicero is perhaps a little more odd than the circumstances allow for. I certainly agree with this, but the farmer wants me to lie to a nearby guard to have Cicero taken in. Surely people who have afflictions of the mind deserve justice as well, at any rate I refuse to lie to guards. My moral stance seems to appeal to the farmer’s more hospitable side and he agrees to help the poor man fix his wagon. Before I leave the farm I harvest some leeks and leave a jewel for the farmer and his wife.

The mammoth should just be on the other side of the hill the farm was built on. I climb it and sure enough there is a mammoth bone yard. I heard mammoths were more intelligent than other beasts and often had burial places (Authors Note: much like modern day elephants). It makes sense to find a spirit guardian here. Like most mammoths it is oblivious to the presence of me, Kharjo, and Vigilance. I imagine its like how most people don’t notice the birds in the trees or butterflies in the flowers. If it were a real live mammoth I would not kill such a majestic creature.

I find a safe place on the rocks and crouch down. I will only have a little time to shoot as many arrows as I can before it sees me and I am trampled. I let loose my best glass arrow. To my bewilderment the mammoth doesn’t act as though it is in pain, it acts angry. I quickly send another arrow and another, but the mammoth reacts as though I they are nothing more than flies being a nuisance. I soon find I only have one glass arrow in my quiver and the mammoth is almost up the hill and upon me. Focusing in, I let it fly. By some luck it must have hit the mammoth in a vital area because it let out a tremendous trumpet and vanished.

As I leave the bone yard a blizzard rolls in. I hope Cicero will be ok if the storm gets worse. I don’t know if the farmer would be kind enough to open his home to the poor man, even in an ice storm. As I cross by I say farewell and make for the Nightgate in before the weather really picked up. Today was certainly a busy one. I fall asleep quickly and dream about mammoths.

Day 71. The Mean Side of Vigilance

In the morning I see that the blizzard passed during the night. This means that today’s journey to Falkreath can begin without delay. I feed vigilance another bit of rabbit and follow the main road, choosing the route initially goes towards Windhelm but a right turn will take you pass the Mixwater mill and passes Whiterun to the east.

Almost immediately we are attacked by a dragon and sprint off down the road, dodging the attack of an ice wolf that was waiting to ambush pray by the road. Safe for the time being I lighten my pace, after I cross by the mill I am challenged to by a Nord woman to a fight. She is heavily armoured with a steel sword. I bash with all my might and by some fortune knock the weapon out of her hand. This doesn’t deter the woman, even though she is clearly defeated. I put my weapon away, but as the woman tried to punch me Vigilance lunges at her an tears out her throat in my defence; still what a vicious dog when provoked.

I see this aggression once more when passing the Valtheheim towers. Bandits had resettled it since I relocated to Riften. Vigilance was the first to notice them and ran ahead and punched on the tower door opening (for real). By the time I caught up he was already biting one of the bandits. I would have been content to just sneak by unnoticed but clearly Vigilance has other ideas. The first tower is connected to another on the opposite side of the river by a narrow bridge. It was on this bridge was one outlaw tried to attack me, but they lost their footing trying to spin around and fell into the river. In the second tower was the bandit chef who was clad in steel plate armour and had an orc shield. She was unphased by my attack and so I applied a paralysis poison to my axe and was able to finish her with ease. The rest of the bandits either fled or died without any additional effort. I smacked Vigilance for his disobedience.

I then passed through Riverwood and I kept following the road until I came close to the location of the guardian bear. Inside the woods I came across another hunter, but this one was different than others I had seen. She was a redguard like me, but I could tell from her eyes that she was completely blind. I couldn’t imagine trying to shoot a bow or skin an animal without my eyes, but somehow this woman did it. I think being blind had its largest effect on her ability to trade. Without noticing I was able to sell her all my pelts even though she only had 22 Septims to trade. I only noticed the error when I looked in my coin purse and saw smooth river stones mixed in with my coin. All I could do was smile and laugh.

I soon located the last guardian I needed to defeat before returning to Froki. Unlike the sabercat and the mammoth, the bear was an easy kill. I took some time to look around the area and noticed a ring of white mushrooms growing around a wizard’s staff and the Father of Nesbin, a book I had previously read. Soon the sun was setting and I turned to Falkreath for the evening. Before checking in at Deadman’s Drink for the night I decided to check out the local apothecary’s shop, Grave Concoctions. I asked what ingredients she had for sale and bought those which I knew how to use. I then asked if she had any Jazbay. She did and I bought a sample. Right away I recognised them as the plants growing on the road between Windhelm and Riften and around the Mixwater Mill where I was just this morning. I will have to make a trip there in the near future. I then leave and spend the night at the inn.

I speak for all of us when I say, we appreciate your reading.

As for Shavina... she had the best reason of all, in my opinion.

FWIW, on my first playthrough before I knew anything at all, I turned him in. Dude was nuts. I knew no good could come from his insanity.

Never turned him in after reading his journals though. = )

I wondered what was up. I thought Shavina was familiar with Jazbay Grapes?

I dunno, I get confused sometimes when I have to catch up. = (

    Day 72. TrolllololololOMG THAT’S HUGE! Part I

The road from Falkreath to Froki’s had been uneventful, probably because I had just taken that route the other day and cleared Helgen of its bandits. Before going inside I spot an elk climbing further up the hill Froki’s shack is perched on. I bring down the elk and even two rabbits that were at the top. Froki seemed to have found the perfect location to settle in as nearly every time I have come to visit there has been soem form of game to hunt. I don’t think he would mind me hunting the animals on his land; at least I hope he doesn’t mind.

At the top of the hill is a large monument to what can only be Talos. I look at the offerings up here, some gold, some meat, a few books, but don’t take anything. I then go inside and tell Froki the guardian spirits were defeated. He is pleased with the news and sadly a little surprised. Maybe he didn’t think a woman from Hammerfell could hunt as well as a Nord man. At any rate, whatever impression the old man had of me had changed and he gave me one last task; defeat the guardian troll. He marks its location on my map at the same spot as the stone monument I fought the necromancer at. I never noticed a cave there before, but I will certainly look now.

It was still morning when I left, figuring that it would be possible to make it to the stone monument before twilight I set out. The path I chose took me through Ivangaard, as I left the village following the path next to the river I hear the sound of a troll. Soon I see the trolls den next to the road. For some reason I think “you’re not the Devil. You’re practice” and assail the troll with my shield and axe making short work of it. The rest of the way is clear and I transmute ore and collect ingredients to pass the time.

Searching around the monument I soon find the opening of the cave and creep inside. At the caves opening I see an ordinary troll. Three arrows later and it falls but not before its cried alert another troll. This second troll doesn’t notice me until I send another arrow, hitting its muscular body. It runs towards me and I take out put away my bow and with my shield and axe finish it off.

Day 72. TrolllololololOMG THAT’S HUGE! Part II

When this toll falls I see that behind it was the guardian troll. More massive than any other beast besides mammoths and dragons it stood nine feet tall, its head touching the roof of the passageway. I raise my shield to block its mighty swing but I can only absorb so much of the impact. Another swing from the troll knocks me back to my senses and I bash back with all my might. The strike doesn’t do much good, and with Kharjo and Vigilance stuck behind me this was looking like one battle I might loose. The troll must have felt this too and seemed to taunt me by jumping up and down, flailing its arms about. I splash some paralysis poison on my axe, hoping it will affect the monster, and I swipe at its arm. The poison works. I run past the troll and now that I am on one side and Kharjo is on the other we lay waste to the troll which is just beginning to stand up after the poison knocked it down. It vanishes before it gets to its feet.

I look around the cave. I see that at least eleven people have tried to kill this troll and have failed, their skulls neatly lined up along a ledge. I see two more bodies, bandits most likely from the nearby towers. There are a few useful items here. A few blisterwort, some food that can be cooked, an old bow that was still usable in spite of its age, and a book to read at the inn.

I leave for Windhelm and the Candlehearth hall. It’s a bit further than Riverwood and with the sun setting it might seem like a poor choice, but I wanted to use the smelter and figured that it would save me time tomorrow when I return to Froki. Additionally, I wanted to gather the Jazbay grapes for the dark elf at the nirmroot farm. At the inn, I read the book I found. It describes how the dwemer used heavy armour to trick the chimer into thinking they were given a golem as a peace offering. The chimer didn’t like that the dwemer and not them would gain fame from using it to defeat the nords and hatched a plan to use the golem to attack the dwemer. But the golem was actually a dwemer soldier in heavy armour and thwarted their plan. I looked at the armour Kharjo was clad in and gave him the book before going to sleep.

    Day 73. Kyne’s Token

Before leaving Windhelm I stop by the Windhelm smithy to make some jewelry to sell at the Riften market place. The trip to Riften was fairly interesting. I had seen more Jazbay growing on the road and collected the remaining samples for the nirnroot farmer. No direct confrontations happened during that gathering but there was a dragon circling over in the wastelands and also a mammoth that might become aggressive if me or my company approached too close. Fortunately nothing terrible happened and we were able to able to cross the wastelands and into the birch forest that let me know we were near Riften.

Just outside the hold was a bear sleeping on the road. My options were to shoot it or to walk around it. I decided it would be better to shoot it. Other people use the road and they might be attacked, also I could get another pelt. I let my arrows fly from a considerable distance, even though the bear charged I was too far away for it to attack me before it died.

At rifted I stopped byt he B&B for a grilled chicken sandwich and ale. While I was there I overheard Mjoll and Aerin talking. I wonder if they are a couple. I then pay Elgrim a visit and buy two new recipes. The first was for a nerve toxin that acted on the part of a person’s brain that controlled flight or flight responses (hypothalamic-pitutary adrenal axis) and causes them to flee rather than battle. The second was a variation of the cure disease potion I learned that used charred skeever hide as an agent. I then worked in the shop for an hour or so and then left to visit Froki.

My trip to Froki’s shack was uneventful. Once inside Froki seemed surprised by my return, thinking I hadn’t left yet. When I told him the troll guardian was defeated he was initially shocked. He regained his composure and gave me the Kyne’s token which was an ancient necklace that had been enchanted. I put it on and thanked him, but before I left I saw him staring at the bow I picked up. I asked is he knew anything about it and he told me it used to be his and that I could keep it. I thought he should have it, he has more memories of the bow than I ever will and maybe he can pass ti on to his grandson who seems keen on following in the old man’s footsteps. I leave the bow in a chest by the bed.

Before returning to Riften I visit the nirnroot farm and deliver the jazbay. I was hoping the dark elf would tach me something new for my trouble, but just like how she didn’t tell me anything about jazbay when I set out she only gave me potions with no explanation of how to make them. I guess I’ll have to wait to find out what they do. I then offer to pick the nirnrrot for her in echange for the potatoes she also was growing. The deal seemed fair and when I was done the work I left for home. On the way I crossed paths with another redguard looking for a fight, I tried telling him I wasn’t interested but he attacked me anyway. He should have listened; it didn’t go well for him.

Back at home I saw that Iona took my time away as an opportunity to have a get together with one of the guards who was just leaving as I came in. I decided to let it go since it was just a guard and the house looked just as I left it, but I’ll be watching her. Before going to bed I practiced my alchemy, but noted that I was running low on supplies, tomorrow I will probably refill my stocks even though that was something I asked Iona to do.

Day 74. Someone Dies Part I

CANNONBALL! I leap from the railing on my porch into the lake! It feels great to be back home and honestly having nothing to do in the world. Kharjo is watching me from the porch, he’s got my back and Vigilance is following me closely. This was my morning up until 10:30 when I went in and changed back into my normal gear. I noticed Kharjo turned his head when I dressed, that was thoughtful. A quick check of my basement tells me I am running low on ingredients for potions and so I head out to see what Riften has for sale.

Most of the stands have nothing interesting. I sell some extra meat to the grocer and then pay a visit to Elgrim’s Elixers. I buy some supplies here, but not enough to make a single drop of anything. It seems I do have something to do today. I look at what I have in my satchel, a few ingredients here and there, but it’s mostly filled with blue mountain flowers. Checking my recipes I see the flowers can be combined with a few things to make healing potions, including saber cat eyes. Perfect! I can throw a little hunting into the mix. I set out for Markarth remembering the adventurer’s journal I found there. I was attacked by two saber-cats in that area and found the remains of other victims; the journal said that whatever killed those people was from a cave that I never investigated, mainly because I seen a third saber-cat outside.

Almost as soon as I stepped foot outside the gate I heard the unmistakeable roar of a dragon. And today was going so well. I try to hide but the dragon lands right in front of me. A burst of fire erupts from its maw right at Vigilance, who had come to my aid. I return the favor and crack the dragon good with my shield. The dragon falls. That was a little too easy. I look around and see that the Riften guards posted at the farm all had their bows drawn and their quivers empty. This is a good day.

    good idea no?

I've got two entries to read still...

I know, not cool to talk about the others here, I'm still a bit beat up by Togoth. I LOVE Shavina, don't be silly... but the loss of him (which I only heard of today) derailed not only my reading but my playing.

I dunno... I thought we were doing wonderfully, cotton candy, and sprinkles.

Then Togoth didn't do a a barrel roll. Anyway. Keep it up. At this point you need little encouragement from me, but... I dunno. It's "uncouth" for you to mention the others in your RRP... thought I'd take a minute.

Figure we've all got the same readers anyway right?

Day 74. Someone Dies part II

But my good day is soon ruined for real. As I walk along looking for ingredients I see the orcs at the stronghold attacking that poor giant again. Enough is enough! I seen too many of these brutes on the road now to know that all they wanted to do was “test their arm” against a worthy adversary and the giant was being targeted because of its size.
I let an arrow fly right into the body of the orc mage launching ice spikes at the giant. She then turns her attention towards me and sends a spike at me, grazing my body. She then climbs off her stand (I say stand not lookout because the orcs are plainly using it to hunt giants like I hunt deer) and hides behind the strongholds wall. She must think she’s so clever, and even taunts me thinking I can’t reach her behind such a barrier.

I show her a thing or two. I climb up the rocks the stronghold was built into and jump into the stronghold. Like an orc she doesn’t give up the fight and foolishly tries to stick me with another ice spike. I shatter it into a million pieces with my shield and cut off her head. The other orcs come outside to find out what all the commotion is about. They see me, an outlander, standing over one of their own and surround me. “You want to test your arm against something test it on my shield”

It was probably not the best thing to say, and more than a little suicidal to take on an entire stronghold of orcs. In fact, at this point I was pretty scared that I had pushed my luck too far and it would be my last mistake. But today was my lucky day, I had enough sense to keep a good supply of healing potions and Kharjo and Vigilance managed to get into the stronghold evening the odds a bit. Together we were able able to defeat the orcs. I looked over the stronghold wall, the giant was still upset and I knew better than to venture out until it calmed down and went back to its camp. I then make another mistake.

I decide to wait inside the orc’s longhouse. I expected to find it empty since I thought all the orcs came out during the attack. All the orcs but one, their chief had come out. Perhaps he was some kind of coward. It doesn’t matter he swings his war axe at me, but I block it well. I keep my shield wall up and he is unable to break it. Just then Vigilance tries to bite the chief, but the orc lands a massive blow on his hind legs. Vigilance yelps in pain and falls on the floor. The orc chief laughs.

Completely enraged I bash and bash the orc, staggering him and swiping. But it’s no use. He is fully clad in orcish armour and I can’t land a killing blow. I grab Vigelence, who is still barely alive and tell Kharjo it’s no use and were leaving. The giant is gone now, and we hop over the fence and run down the road until were no longer insight of the orc stronghold.

I set Vigilance down. My heart breaks when I see that he can’t stand up. The leg is cut too deeply. Vigilance whimpers. He won’t survive without immediate help, but I can’t get the dog to take a healing potion and I don’t know any magic to heal him. I realize I need to end his suffering. Killing Vigilance was harder than I could imagine. I had ended the lives of countless animals before, but this was different. I say “it’s time to go home Vigilance”. I shoot the arrow between his eyes and he saw no more.

We floated Vigilance’s body in the lake and I returned to Riften, no longer wanting to go to far off lands in search of ingredients. Instead, I sold my orc shield to Brand Shei who was the only merchant still out. I don’t want anything more to do with orcs. At home I take a few bottles off the shelf and drink in my basement. Vigilance will be missed.

    Day 75. <3 Part I

In spite of last night’s heavy drinking I woke up before sunrise. I went outside and looked out at the water from my porch and thought of Vigilance. I went back inside and tried to sleep a little longer but it didn’t do me much good. At the first sign of light I went into town. I didn’t really know what I was doing or where to go so I wandered aimlessly for a bit.

At some point I felt the urge to do something about how I was feeling. Riften doesn’t exactly have a great reputation, but there was the temple of Mara. For the first time I visited the temple. I never thought much of worship before, in fact I was often skeptical of religion in Skyrim, but since Hircine spoke to me I have come the believe that maybe there is truth to what the priests say.

Inside was quite empty, it figures, the people of Riften don’t exactly strike me as devout. I look around, noting the statue of Mara on the table and touch it, but not like how people seeking blessings do. It felt smooth and cool. I then take a look through a book on the table that offers guidance on how to worship the divines. It mostly describes my previous feelings about worship, how the gods mostly don’t take an interest in the affairs of mortals. But then it describes how making sacrifices for the gods and doing their work may help you get noticed by them. I ask the priest next to me how I can help the temple but he directs me to the priestess.

She explains how Mara is a Goddess of love and tells me that I will need to act as Mara’s hands in order to receive her blessing. I’m told about a girl in Iversted who is in love and prayed to Mara for help. This sounds easy enough, Iversted is arguably the closest place to Riften and I could be there by mid-afternoon. And maybe bringing these two people together will help me feel better about losing Vigilance. I agree to help and set off after having lunch at the B&B.

    Day 75. <3 Part II

The short trip was uneventful enough and soon I am at Iversted. I ask around for the girl and eventually find her working in a farm. It seems her parents won’t let her run off with a local boy so I agree to talk to her parents. The mother seems ok with the couple, so I deduce the father is the problem. Its funny how fathers never want their daughters to have a relationship. Speaking with the father confirms this, although he pretends that he doesn’t want her to leave the village because of how small it is. I return to the girl and tell her what I learned and recommend that she leaves with him, after all Mara did charge me with uniting them. I am then asked to go tell the boy the good news at the inn.

I was halfway though telling the boy about what had gone one when I heard the inn keeper arguing with a bar maid (maybe his daughter) about going too close to the barrow next to the village. I had previously turned him down when he asked me to investigate it because I was afraid of the barrow too. Back then I didn’t realize it was so much of a problem. I finish talking to the boy and then offer my assistance to the inn keeper

I enter the barrow expecting to see drauger, which I’ve now seen on many occasions but instead there was a ghostly apparition behind a steel gate. He wasn’t particularly scary and I found it odd how after speaking its warning it walked off rather than fade away. I eventually found some levers that controlled the gate and followed him careful of the traps that seemed to be all over the place.

I eventually found him standing in a rather comfortable looking room. Obviously mad at me for intruding he begins attacking me with magic. I strike at him with my axe and when I see blood on my blade I realize this is not a ghost. I then kill the man and examine the room. The man’s journal was on a table and I thumbed though it and learned how he was pretending to be a ghost to keep the locals away, but I didn’t read more than this since I had solved the mystery. I also found out the man was using potions to look like a ghost after sampling the bottled liquid thinking it was a healing potion. I took another ghost potion from the table and returned to the inn to play a little joke.

Once inside I drank the remaining potion and scared the inn keeper half to death when I greeted him. I then explained the whole thing to him and gave him the journal as proof. The thanked me for my trouble and rewarded me with a sapphire dragon claw. I figured it probably had something to do with the barrow but decided to leave it alone, let the dead rest I say. I have a warm meal at the inn and get some rest of my own since its now too late to return to Riften.

Heh heh, never thought of trying those potions out on anyone. Wonder if they would fool a real ghost?

To be honest, he didn't act any different than if I didn't take a potion, which is too bad.

    Day 76. Outclassed

When I wake up I return to the temple of Mara, noting the sound of the town merchants hawking their wares. I speak with the priestess at the alter and after informing her of my success with the young couple I am told there is another relationship that needs Mara’s help. Very cryptically she tells me about love’s embers in stone. Thankfully, she then tells me to go to Markarth and speak to someone named Calcemo.

On the way I pass by M’aik who gives me some useful advice about how using two spells might burn a sweetroll. If I ever learn to cook using flame spells I will keep that in mind. I also make an important discovery. Scaly Pholiota mushrooms grow on rotten birch trees. There must be tonnes of the stuff in the forest around Riften and I made sure to collect plenty before following the road into the pine forest. I also gathered other ingredients as well, hoping to refill my stock.

Outside Falkreath I was busy looking for ingredients and tasting wild honey (because wild honey seems safe to eat, learned it increases stamina) on the side of the road and noticed a group of mercenaries walk by. I went back on the road to see what they were up to and found out they were actually well armoured bandits. One had a flaming steel battle axe and after taking a hit I learned me and Kharjo were outclassed so we fled all the way to Falkreath.

I tried to tell a guard about the bandits but he actually commented that there was a $40 bounty against me. I couldn’t be sure what this was for so I asked if it was really worth the trouble given that a group of bandits are attacking people on the roads. He must have seen the sense in this and let me go but not before saying “I heard you had something to do with Sinding’s escape”. So that’s what the bounty was for. (Author’s note: I actually hit a Vigilant of Stendar with an arrow thinking they were a deer, I did yield and he let me go realizing ti was a mistake but must have reported me to the guards)

The rest of the trip was uneventful and I decided to rent a room at Roriksted. Erik wasn’t there, probably having an adventure of his own. It was too bad I would have liked to see how far along he’s come. I also noted that Ulfric posted a few Stormcloaks to watch over the hold.

Day 77. Ol’ Farmer Falmer says I been in his mushrooms again!

In the morning Kharjo and I continued our journey to Markarth. Just outside Roriksted there was a saber-cat that I was able to shoot from a distance and I remembered the cave that was likely a saber cat den and how the cat’s eyes could be combined with blue mountain flowers to make a health potion. I followed the same path I took to avoid the Forsworn road block when I first found the cave and the adventures journal describing the mauled travelers I had also found.

Sure enough there were more saber-cats on the path. One thought it could ambush me when I passed by but I seen in peering over the tall grass at me and so I shot it from a distance. I soon reached the cave, but inside wasn’t what I was expecting. Inside was not warm and dry like you would expect a saber-cat’s den to be like. Instead it was wet and humid and there were mushrooms and spider webs everywhere. I had potions for some of the mushrooms so I gathered what I could. I also found the body of an adventurer but there was no sign of how he died.

Exploring the caves I soon found the spiders that had made the webs. They were easy enough to kill so I didn’t expect they were the creatures that had been doing the attacks, although there were dead bodies in their webs. The bodies were burnt, which was unexpected and only added to me suspicion that the spiders were not the problem. As I moved forward I found a more likely culprit, one of the strange white elves I seen earlier when I explored an old dwarf ruin outside Dawnstar. I knew they weren’t friendly so I shot it before it even noticed I was there.

As I went on I learned more about the white elves. First, they seemed to be farming the mushrooms as evidenced by a basket I found with a few samples inside. Second, they had other “civilized” traits and had built small shelters, chests, and gates out of the same black material as their armour. I soon found out the black material came from large armoured insects they elves were also farming. In fact, I found holding pens with dead men and mer inside, one had a note saying the elves were feeding the captives to the bugs. I found out the bugs were called chaurus as I found plenty of chaurus eggs in their holding pens and bodies. I decided that I needed to finish going through this cave and kill the remaining elves, hopefully this would make traveling to and from Markarth safer for everybody. This took an afternoon to do.

When I finally left the cave I made my way back onto the main road, nearly being discovered by a dragon. The rest of the way was fairly uneventful, but I did notice berries growing on medium sized shrubs that looked like the ones drawn on bottle of ale from Helgen. Assuming they were safe I tasted one, it had a floral taste at first that became sweet, then bitter like hops (Authors note: I have tasted juniper berries since I make beer and this is in fact how they taste, the floral taste is a lot like gin). I didn’t learn much else by eating the berry, maybe its alchemical effect only shows in certain situations.

Soon I arrived at Markarth but it was now dark and I rented a room at the Silverblood Inn. I hate the stone beds that are common in this hold and it takes a while to sleep.

Day 77. A day in Markarth

I hate Markarth. These stone beds never let me get a good night’s sleep. I leave the inn, and a guard asks me if I seen any warriors from Hammerfell, amazed that some of us have curved swords. Curved Swords! I sometimes forget that I don’t look a lot like a typical redguard because I am lighter than most of my kin. Speaking of which, I’m fairly sure that the silver smith’s daughter must be from another marriage, since his wife is also a redguard but the daughter looks like a nord. One of the books I collected says how kids take after their mother’s race. I then look for Calcelmo at Understone keep.

I do find him, working with his nephew. I interrupt their discussion of an excavation site to introduce myself. He doesn’t know I am there on Mara’s behalf and talks about being a a court mage and dwemer expert. I ask about any love problems and he explains that he loves the Jarl’s housecarl Faleen, but he gets nervous and can’t talk to her. I’m told a local bard knows what she likes and that I should talk to him. Before leaving, Kharjo tells me to ask about the excavation (I swear the cat is possessed). I learn that there’s a spider inside and if I kill it I could see the dwarf museum. Kharjo would not be pleased if we went looking for the bard now so instead we go to the excavation site.

Inside, I soon found some small spiders that were easy to kill and eventually found the giant spider Calcelmo told me about in a large open room. I shot arrows at it while it lowered itself into the room. I then ran past it and up a short flight of stairs to shoot from higher ground while Kharjo distracted it. When it died, I noticed there was a dead imperial nearby with a note that talked about guiding a research team into the ruins but there was no other info. I returned to Calcelmo and he gave us the key to the museum. I also mentioned the journal, but other than wanting me to go get the team’s notes he didn’t seem too concerned. I decided to spend the morning touring the museum with Kharjo.

Inside were numerous displays. It was a lot like being in a dwarf ruin, but with everything of interest nearby and in glass cases. There was a lot on display including weapons, books, and even plates and cups. Some interesting displays were the large dwemer guardian in the center of the room, a large mounted crossbow, and some equipment I seen on the white elves made from chorus. Overall, I was impressed (not nearly as much as Kharjo) and thought it was better than the mythic dawn museum.

After about two hours we left to the Silverblood Inn for lunch where I hoped to see the bard but he wasn’t there. Strange, most bards practically live at the inn. I decided to relax a bit and check out the rest of the keep, maybe do some shopping. My desire to spend money was soon thwarted by boring merchants with nothing interesting to buy. All I left the market place with was a few ingredients from the Hag’s cure where I was also asked to deliver a potion to the Jarls Stewart.

I returned to Understone keep and went to the Jarl’s throne room. The steward there didn’t know anything about the potion. I then ask the housecarl who introduces himself as the bard I was looking for. Strange. I do talk to him about Faleen and buy a poem from him for 200 septims (hopefully Mara appreciates my sacrifice). Noticing that there have been big changes to the Jarl’s court I leave wondering where Faleen is, since I need to give her this poem. I before bed I spend a little time by the fire reading some books, one about creative ways to open a lock into opening, and another about Tamriel before men arrived. I also paid Ogmund to tell me a story from his adventures as a skald (+1 speech). I then go to my rented room for another great night on a stone bed.

Now level 31 (100/120/380; New Perk Haggling 1/5)
