I would think they are mandatory on any character. Almost like smithing to dragon armor.

The prolem is once enchanting and smithing become high the game gets easy well on normal difficulty it does. Sorry I'm not elite enough to play on master yet.

I use one or the other in combination with smithing, but not both. Two or three of those skills in conjunction is usually overkill for any build. Was certainly fun to play with initially, but boring after making yourself so powerful every time you make a new character.

Try playing on expert, it's a good medium. Not too hard but not too easy.

Smithing to dragon armor isn't "mandatory" on any character. Maybe to look cool, but hitting the cap is easy enough with steel armor (or elven).

I rarely take alchemy, and only took enchantment once. Never both at the same time. Also, I concur on the expert being 'optimum' thing too.

They are far from mandatory. I play on master, have no perks in either one, and I'm getting along just fine, though I do use Savior Hide, Boots and Gauntlets of the Old Gods, Diadem of the Savant, and fire enchanted bow, frost enchanted sword, and Ysgramor's shield. Though I did enchant the sword and bow, I don't have any perks in enchanting and could easily do without the enchants to my bow and sword. There's still a good degree of challenge, not frustratingly hard, but not boringly simple either.

Well, across my characters I've certainly taken advantage of enchantment (?,!), but alchemy has never been my thing. Dunno why.

If they fixed the kill cams for enemies, I'd play master ALL the time. As it is though, the order of operations decides if the enemy kills you BEFORE applying your armor bonus. For example, if you have 200 health, and hit the armor cap...

If a bandit hits you with a 200 point attack, the AI calculates that you will die from the attack.
    Queue kill cam = OHKO

THEN it checks your armor. So an attack for 40 health is a kill shot.

Fix that, and it's master ALL the way.

Alchemy is a great "all around" skill. It can do anything (essentially) but there is almost always a better way to do it. Still, for a few extra perks you can heal yourself, do damage to the enemy, increase your resistances, use illusion skills (for a while), increase your spell damage (currently the only way to do that), weaken the enemy etc...

It's a great skill at doing everything, but it's severely lacking in a 'strong point.' It's MAYBE the best way to heal (being instant) but it's also the heaviest

I've never had anything other then a saber cat at level 15 one hit kill me, but I see where you're coming from, but to me, that just adds to the challenge.

Well, you clearly aren't a mage with only about 200 hp and a flesh spell Get hit, then get kill cam'd even though you're at 75%+ health.

I'm glad you enjoy it, but for me that's just annoying. Hopefully they'll do somthing else to increase the challenge IF they ever fix that. Then we can both be happier.

After my first char I take 2 smithing perks, arcane being the second. I don't bother much with alechemy, but do put some in the first perk. I do put 4 perks into enchanting to get the 2-enchantment perks, both times I got enchanting up to 100 my char was between 50-60.
Sneak has historically been the skill I get maxed first, followed by what ever my main weapon is.

400+ hours and i never got anywhere on the alchemy tree, even when i did attempt to learn it. i might have hit 70 enchanting or so, tops. and just this weekend i got 100 smithing with a level 43 nord & saw dragon armor for the first time. still have never seen daedric weapons or armor except for one helm. and I started a new character yesterday so it probably still won't happen for awhile. maybe this will be "the one"

Believe me, I've tried to get into alchemy before. I've hoarded ingredients and vowed to eventually pick up some perks in it. Yet, when the time comes, I just can't pull the trigger. There's just too many other places I want to put those perks. Maybe if I can ever play a character beyond level 40 I'll do it (350+ hours and I still haven't passed this point on any of my characters).

I have enchanting, love enchanting. Though, I don't have any alchemy on this character. Only time I have ever put points into alchemy is when I want to do the restoration exploit. Other than that I don't bother.

I haven't poured many, if any perks into alchemy or enchantment. Just not really my thing.

Current character is level 42 and has Alchemy at 16, it's only been bumped up one by a skill book. She hasn't made a single potion ...

    I've never got smithing to 100 - don't care.

Do have a few boosts in the basic enchantment (60% I think) mainly for followers gear ... my character relies on what she finds and steals

Yeah, I've never put perks into Alchemy. Enchanting is certainly useful, but I don't level it until mid-late game. When you play on Master (and why wouldn't you?) you really need to focus on combat/armor skills for your first 25 levels or so.

I think the only perk that I absolutely need to get on any character would be the Merchant perk in the Speech tree. Being able to sell any item to any vendor just makes life so much easier.

You don't need alchemy, with smithing an enchanting alone you can become over powered.
