The History Channel: Battle for the Pacific User Review
An average game that is still a whole lot of fun if you enjoy any shooter... especially WWII shooters!

- The Bottom Line:
- "Too short"
Okay, so I admit, the game does have it's flaws and it is WAY too short (I finished it in about 2 hours 30 tops... possibly less, and it was all in one day as well). That being said, the games two most important matters already pointed out, let's look in to the game.
Campaign -
Nothing special here, but it is set in the rare (for a video game) setting of the Pacific, during WWII (WWII games 99% of the time are set in the European campaign). Maybe it was just my love for games such as Call Of Duty, Medal Of Honor and Brothers In Arms, but I did find it really enjoyable from the get go. Yes, it was predictable and it was pretty repetitive (what shooter isn't though, to be honest?), but the game kept my attention right to the end, and I enjoyed every single part of the campaign. Unfortunately as previously stated, it was WAY too short, and I am not one to usually say that about video games as I find the majority of games people say are "short" to be of average length.
The story is just your run of the mill WWII game story, so don't expect anything of mystery or suspense. But if you have played Call Of Duty or Medal Of Honor in the past (who hasn't?), then you will know the thing that thrives you to complete the campaign in these types of games is the gameplay and the level designs.
What I did find kind of ridiculous though, personally, was the fact that well... the levels got shorter. For example, the first level seemed a bit too long as I kept expecting it to end, but that's all good. But my problem was towards the last 15 or so minutes of the game, the levels just got short... and I mean REALLY short. It went from 20 or so minute levels to literally... and I mean literally 1 to 2 minutes. The last level is less than a minute long, granted you don't die. I was just gutted as I was having a lot of fun (as much fun as in Call Of Duty or Medal Of Honor, honestly), and it ended WAYYY too soon. I had to make this review just sound like slang by using such a silly way to express that word, but that is how short the campaign is.
There are a few bugs present, but none game breaking, besides one that is just annoying. You will mostly just be following your squad leader, and when the next objective appears, you will have to follow your squad. But the problem here is you have to actually run with them straight away or the game gives you warnings about being so far behind and you will fail and have to reload the checkpoint, even if you are following them. The lack of a sprint button and the fact that the AI seems a lot faster than you does not help one bit.
The game is pretty easy on the Hardest setting but still gives you a slight challenge. I prefer games that feel "just right" to be honest, because too easy can be boring and too hard can be frustrating, and this game definately fits under "just right" for me, as there were a few spots in the game I had trouble with for a while.
Graphics -
The graphics are fine. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing bad. They're just average.
Sound -
The sound is fine. Again, nothing to get excited about or want to poke a 30 ft pole at.
Multiplayer -
Sadly, I can't comment on this, as I was never able to find a soul online. But I can imagine it being like old Call Of Duty if you wish to find players to play online with.
Presentation -
The presentation as a whole is good. They nailed all the themes and looks that you would expect from a WWII game. The sounds and graphics though, as stated above, are just average.
Should I buy this game? -
Sure, but for cheap. Or if you prefer to rent, do that. You will finish it in one night either way. I personally bought it for cheap a few months back (I wanted it bad as I love WWII shooters, and I knew exactly what to expect so I was not disappointed). It is a game that I will keep coming back to over and over again on those lazy days where you want to just play something for a few hours, I like owning a few of those games.
If you asked me, it got such low scores because everybody expected too much from it and it was full price. But if you find it for the price of shopping for a few items and keep in mind all of the flaws this game has, you will not be disappointed if you are slightly interested at all to play this. I gave it a 7.0, but this game deserves at least a 6.0 or even 6.5 for providing you with a fun time.
To sum it all up -
The game is way too short, difficulty is just right, graphics and sound are average, and the online multiplayer is a ghost town. Don't expect ANYTHING groundbreaking or original at all, just a fun afternoon. If you find it cheap, go ahead and get it.

History Channels Battle For The Pacific is a textbook example of a disastrous game that should never have been created
