Is it possible that that The Minish Cap's Hyrule is actually this game's Faron Woods? There are several reasons that make me think that this could be the case. First of all, most of TMC's Hyrule is forested, or looks like it could've been at some time. Secondly, both TMC's Hyrule and SS's Faron Woods have lakes to the east, iirc. Third, TMC's Hyrule Town and Castle could be what SS's Sealed Grounds become since Link and Zelda stayed there at the end of SS. And finally, TMC's Hyrule is right below a sky palace.

So, is this actually possible? Or am I just looking too much into things?

I don't think there's even a possibility that The Minish Cap's Hyrule isn't Skyward Sword's surface world. Apart from New Hyrule in Spirit Tracks, Hyrule's location hasn't changed. Its geography gets wonky between games, but that's mostly because the game designers do need a way to control game progression. Within the setting of the series, Hyrule is Hyrule.

I haven't thought too much about reasons for placing TMC one place or another but I was just sort of thinking of it as being the same castle that becomes TP's castle or AoL's North Palace, which would be way the hell up north from the OoT/LttP/LoZ region.

At any rate, it is clear that Hyrule is a much larger place than just the little slice of it we usually see represented by one mountain, one forest, one lake, etc. The only game to give us any idea of the true scope of the kingdom is AoL, although I think TP condensed the massive Death Mountain Area from AoL's map into something that could be skipped over like it was nothing when passing over into the first field area.

The one solid fact we have is that the Sealed Temple from SS is the same location as the Temple of Time from OoT, the Temple of Time from TP, and the Sacred Forest Grove from LttP. This easily puts most of TP and SS north of anything in OoT or LttP.

I hadn't really noticed it this way myself until someone else suggested the connection, but one might speculate that Jabu Jabu's spring was Lake Floria. SS's forest region skirts around the north side of the OoT/LttP/LoZ Death Mountain and accesses that spring. On TP's map this would all be off-map south of TP Kakariko / TP Death Mountain.
