- Jan 25, 2013 3:42 am GMT1. Day/night cycle - All of the previous 4 3D Zelda game had this. For what purpose would they remove it? It's not removed as it is just a light switch. The Zelda series was originally designed as a virtual garden, where the whole time thing made it feel like the place in the game was a lot more immersive and lifelike. The sunset in the Wind Waker over the ocean is the most beautiful part of the game, and I would have loved to have seen this in the sky. Also the surface could do with having a different feel dependant on the time of day.
2.The layout of the surface map - I really enjoyed the game world, every inch of the games world felt hard fought and like it needed to be there in comparison to Twilight Princess which had huge but vacant areas. My complain here is that I thought that the three areas were going to eventually connect as more and more of the map was unveiled but then they didn't. It would have made so much sense for the whole of the surface to eventually connect towards the end in a similar vein to Metroid. Instead we have three different overworlds that are more like different planets than different areas. This would also make questing a lot easier, instead of having to find a bird statue, fly to a different light and then flying down, you could just make your way over to the different areas when trying to get 100%. - Jan 25, 2013 4:31 am GMTI don't really mind that day and night isn't automatic in this game. What I did dislike is the fact that you cannot fly out at night. I mean, Link is on a mission to rescue the Headmaster's daughter - you'd think Gaepora would give Link, like, special permission or something so that he can fly out and search for Zelda at any hour.
Nope, we have to use Beedle or go to Lumpy Pumpkin to get those Gratitude Crystals.
Yeah, the whole cloud barrier disappearing as you unlock the areas would've been cool. I also though that the Thunderhead would actually disappear and not just become a giant ball with a sphincter-like hole to enter.
Yes that sounded dirty and I wanted it to.

Cloud and Sephiroth - battling each other since '97 for your amusement
Give it a rest already! - Jan 25, 2013 11:24 am GMTThis game would be better than TP if:
the sky wasn't so empty
the side quests were more interesting
the harp was more useful
the dungeon bosses were designed better (final bosses are fine)
if the padding wasn't so obvious or at least more interesting .
This game beats TP in story, music, and controls yet the lack of the above things makes it really hard for me to say that's it is better than TP

"I'm no Jedi; I'm just a guy with a Lightsaber and a few questions." - Kyle Katarn - Jan 27, 2013 8:08 am GMTI actually didn't mind the way they changed the day/night cycle. It was a lot less frustrating to have more control over it and know that it would stay day/night until I slept in a bed and wanted it to change. However I do wish there was more stuff to do at night. Each section of the map should have had a day/night section and you should have been able to fly at night.
As for the surface map, I agree with your complaint. I was also hoping and expecting the areas to connect more, especially after the Mogma in Eldin said that one of his friends found a secret passage to Lake Floria. I actually looked for it for a while before giving up and just flying there.

Wind Waker's overworld had a lot to do. Pretty much every non-storyline island had at least a small puzzle, and a couple of them had mini-mini-dungeons. It's just that everything was so spaced out and you had to sail everywhere. Twilight Princess' overworld was significantly less busy, but it still at least had a bunch of treasure chests and pieces of heart hidden on high ledges and other places.
The sky had... was it three treasure chests, including the one in the Thunderhead? Other than those, there were at most five islands with something to do other than open a barely-hidden (if at all) Goddess chest.

When I play Skyward Sword, whether it's just for 10 minutes or 2 hours - there's always something to do it seems! Even if it's just collecting another Amber Relic or just getting to the next bird save statue - I always leave the game satisfied.
The ability to upgrade Link's items is a welcome change (reminded me of Monster Hunter, RAAAWRR!)
I don't have too many gripes with SS but I'll share one: no magic meter.
Of course, TP didn't have a magic meter either......

I drink your milkshake - Jan 28, 2013 10:20 am GMTWhat is it with the magic in Zelda games?
I mostly remember magic in OoT and aside from Din's Fire, the rest of the spells were pointless. Nayru's Embrace never did much for me and if I can't have a Teleport Spell that brings me from Hyrule to Gerudo Desert or something like that, then Farore can punch herself in the ovaries for all I care.
Thank god for the Teleportation melodies...
I dimly remember magic in Link to the past (or was it Link's Awakening) and they still seemed pretty useless except maybe against one or two bosses in the game.

You dimly remember magic in A Link to the Past? Like half the items required magic: Magic Lantern, Fire Rod, Ice Rod, Magic Cape, Magic Powder, Cane of Byrna, Cane of Somaria, Bombos Medallion, Ether Medallion, Quake Medallion
And a LOT of those items were frequently useful. I used the Fire Rod, Ice Rod, Magic Cape and Cane of Byrna a lot.

I only played the game until I got to the other world. I ended up making a mistake and kind of made the game un-winnable? So I never finished it and never retried the game.

Why talk about a game you know nothing about then? And the lockout in original Zelda wasn't toward the end. Like two dungeons from the end or something. And in remakes was fixed. You b troll in?
And this game. Not sure. The backtracking killed me. Having to redo the same map over and over and over again. And they just relock the doors. I just wish the world didn't feel like a bunch of dungeons. Story was my favorite of any Zelda but it felt like it was forcing to me do side quest the way they pushed all the pre dungeon stuff on me. They took way longer than dungeon itself. While TP and Wind Waker were large and "empty" I would rather ride around on Epona. That's of course personal preference. And I enjoyed the islands even if they took forever to get to. But the rides there were ugh. Most islands felt like they had something to give though. - Jan 29, 2013 2:37 pm GMTallgdnamesrgone posted...

I don't understand why people have such an issue with the backtracking in SS. So many other, well received series have even more backtracking (Metroid or Metal Gear Solid anyone?). Would you rather have fewer areas that feel more integral to the overall experience, or would you rather have a vast overworld that is mostly barren and lifeless?
It's almost as if people are just rallying around a few new mechanics in SS, and think it's fun to hate the game because of them. - Jan 29, 2013 2:46 pm GMT[This message was deleted at the request of the original poster]
- Jan 29, 2013 4:02 pm GMTI don't find the absence of the day/night cycle bad at all. It doesn't take anything away from the game, and just because other games had it, it doesn't mean Skyward Sword should.
I also didn't care that the map didn't connect. I mean, really, why does it need to? Would it add so much more to the game if there were connecting areas?
