Tom heads to Springfield for this video review of the classic The Simpsons Arcade Game.
i dont hate this review because the reviewer is bashing one of my favorite arcade games but for the fact hes comparing it to something new its an old game its here to bring us nostalgic memories not to pisses us off for not holding up im mean honestly and also if you had played the game while growing up you would see the certain faults he puts out why because we played this game for the fun not to rant about how bad it is now in comparison so yeah in my opinion this game rocks and thats because of nostalgia not because i think it could be better because the games already awesome and if u want something to feel new then play a new simpsons game

Ah, the memories the memories. I spent countless hours playing this game as a kid. Good times, A rating of 3 seems a little harsh though.
this game came out in 91? for arcades right? which would be hard to find these days correct? so me downloading it would be for sheer memories to goof around with my buddies since most next gen games dont support 4 player split screen right? okay JUST making sure because it sounds like hes comparing this 2D arcade game from the 90s to current 1080p blockbuster hits we play on systems far superior than anything we could imagine back when consoles controllers had two buttons and a d-pad...should i vent more? never. Commenting on Toms reviews are becoming tiresome
That's it. Tom sucks. I've never liked him, but this has now gone too far. FIRE THIS GUY NOW!
The 8-Bitsons....
Wow. I mean come on, I love that game it fun too play with your friends.
I agree with this review... Not everything is as good as we remember. And to all the people hating on the guy for telling the truth I guarantee none of you will be playing the game 3 days to a week after shelling out $10... We all did the same thing with the TMNT arcade game. I played it all of maybe 3 times & haven't touched it in years.
Yes, Tom is overly harsh once more, but really, the game isn't all that much better as depicted here. It's not a horrifying failure, but it is barely passable. If that soothes your nostalgic rage, then sure, but I was a bit disappointed to have my childhood memories shattered like this. Oh well, plenty of arcade games that ARE still decent today.
This site's reviews are absolutely great 99.9% of the time, but this is one of the most ambitiously stupid attempts to put one's self ahead of the curve I've ever seen. Is this guy serious with this review? It's almost a direct port from a game that's maybe over 20 years old at this point... it was pretty much part of the backdrop of every awesome arcade I ever went to as a kid and I spent tons of money on it as a filler while waiting to get on other machines like Revolution X (which was a mindless, goofy game), Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, NBA Jam, etc. And we're really going to measure it up against Skyrim or something? Someone knock this nerd's teeth all over the floor,.
For $4, sure I'd pick it up. For $10? Not on your life. Things like "40 minutes of gameplay" and "simple, 2 button controls" factor in to a $10 port of an arcade that came out 20 years ago. I can buy games that came out less than 10 that cost less than this, and offer MUCH more gameplay. If $10 is worth it to relive this game, then by all means, go for it. But for me, well, I'm not missing anything, ESPECIALLY not $10.
How, that was harsh. What exactly was this reviewer expecting from a port of a 90 year old video game?
It's an ARCADE GAME!!!! You're supposed to put in a quarter and play it for a few minutes. It doesn't need to keep your for hours. It might be bad on the ported version, but the thing that should be reviewed is the arcade original.
@TomMcShea wow Tom did you take the time to comment on all your other hundreds of other detractors of this review? I feel honored. Also you miss my point, multiple times you talk about memories of this game and how this crushes them. Sure my comment may imply I was talking about all old games but for f***s sake have some insight and don't be so anal.
@JustPlainLucas Honestly he shouldn't even be commenting on his review anyways. Its a review. If your a fanboy, your buying it anyways. If your not, then his review make alot of sense.
This is hands down one of the worst reviews I've ever read and I never complain about reviews. This is a game that is over 20 years old. I doubt anybody wanted any upgrades from the arcade version, this is exactly what people have been asking for.
i like that game, when i was young i spend more than 50 bucks and never beat it (I just a kid dont be hard with me), i will spend the last 10$ on this game beat it and then made a crazy dacing (another kid chapter close), then I can continuo with my life. Bendiciones
Aliens vs Predator 4 player arcade game, please bring to 360 !
Tom is funny! The Cup and Ball routine was classic!
This reminds me of ANOTHER horrible game from my childhood where you played as a small pixel man who jumped on turtles and mushroom creatures, climbed in occasional pipes, and basically just spent a whole lot of time running to the right a bunch. That game only had two buttons as well, and the controller actually had to be ATTACHED to the console with a wire! A WIRE! What a god awful game that was. Also, Tom McShea is a two-bit hack who should probably save the comedy routines for people who are funny...and likable...and are not complete knobs. His blatant attempts to come off controversial are so try-hard that every time he submits a new review to gamespot somewhere in the world an adorable hipster kitten suffers a stroke. I can only take solace that this hydrocephalic chimp will never likely be put into a position that would allow him even the slightest possibility to procreate. Lord only knows this world is already filled to the brim with mouthy, humorless dullards.
When Tom McShea asked his parents how babies were made they handed him a cup and ball. He's still trying to figure it out.
I wouldn't post anything if it this was just a difference of opinion, but for some reason this guy went out of his way to be a total douche bag...sweet cup & ball bit man. He talks about "remembering" this game, but he reviews it as if this was just created this year. "The two button combat is mind-numbingly dull"...uh yea man, did you not play this before? There were two buttons. You review this as if you expected it to have the graphics and puzzles of Uncharted 3. "This is a sad reminder of the hours and quarters you wasted in your younger days". Hours and quarters YOU may have wasted, but I guess not all of us hate our childhoods as much as you. The one thing I do agree upon is that $10 is a bit steep for this product. Other than that, this was possibly the worst quality review I've ever seen.
Well, it's a been a few days, and Tom still hasn't answered my question on whether or not he likes TMNT. I'm just going to assume that he's afraid to answer that he likes it, because it would contradict his entire basis for this review. Shame. Hmm.. Tom McShame. Coined it. Copyright 2012.
10$? MGS1 is like 8 dollars now
The Simpsons, TMNT, and X-Men = Arcade gold
whether this was biased or not i don't care, but there is one important fact within the review; $10 is a steep asking price for this. The fact that you can plow through this game 3 times while watching The Dark Knight is kind of ridiculous.
O and Barts original blue shirt gotta love it.
One of the great arcade classics that any old school gamer would like and as mentioned in another comment would always have a line to play along with the TMNT at the arcades. Would be a bit dull and repetative now and only really for those who appreciate old school games or love anything thats Simpsons.
20 years too late, McShea!
McShea wants to be famous.
Gamespot are once again biased, arrogant, disrespectful, and completely oblivious to the concept of an ARCADE GAME! The Simpsons arcade game is the best Simpsons game ever made, period. Smithers stealing the diamond was clearly a parody of the TMNT arcade game and videogame stereotypes at the time in general. Every time I find this arcade machine, along with the TMNT games, it is always jam packed. I'm calling you out Tom McShae! You are a pompous douche. Go back to school and learn what professional journalism is you hack.
nice
@Double_Wide - He probably wanted an HD remake. Sorry Tom, this is uncalled for. Your peers disagree according to metacritic. A 3? You can't be serious. Maybe you should be an editor and not review any longer. It seems as though you let your personal vendetta against certain games get in the way of you creating an objective review.
He made one good point, I'm one of those people who waited years for this to get released on a console, & it never happened! I first played this game when I was about 7 years old in an arcade on holiday somewhere (I'm now 27) & thought it was absolutely brilliant. Soon as I got home I looked everywhere for this game on super nintendo, megadrive etc, couldn't find it anywhere. Bought a few other Simpsons games at the time thinking they would be just as good, & they turned out to be terrible. & it remained the one game I really wanted to get for along time. Until I just forgot about it. Next to games like Skyrim is this game a 3.0? Yes. But as for the memory's of playing this game as a 7 year old kid in a small arcade? It's a 10.0 So I didn't get this on a home console like I wanted, but I did manage to find another great arcade port for Super Nintendo.. Street Fighter II : )
I can remember playing the original, and wanting a home version at the time, but would I like to play it now? HELL NO!!! I agree with the score from the point of view that this just doesn't offer enough content, and this game never offered gameplay to contend with the better beat 'em ups around at the time. It was mostly just popular because of the Simpsons brand.
the reviewer clearly has a child hood hatred for this game and is totally bias.
@TomMcShea - also, take a look at the discrepancy between your score and the 86 (lol) people that actually rated it...you're a bit off...
@TomMcShea the only compliments on this were backhanded. And this game was fun. You dont think so, but I doubt that your personal distaste for the game warrants it a 3.0 in as much as anyone who hates COD over there at gamespot would just give it a 1.0 rating...
No offense Tom, but you sound like a total douche in this review. ITS A PORT OF AN ARCADE CLASSIC! What else did you expect it to be? Geez...
Not even worth a 7.5? Ouch.
I should slap this critic in the face my god what was he expecting in all honesty! This is an arcade classic built for arcade enthusiast and simpson's fans. I only got to play the demo far, but the only thing i could remember was joyfully spending my tokens with three random kids trying to get to the end :)
I think its pretty unfair to judge the game so harshly, taking its age into account. However, I would only pay probably £1 for the game, anything more is just to much to ask, considering its age.
Ahh, nostalgia. I used to spend so much quarters playing this game at the local pizza joint.
Whoo! Simpsons!
Horrible, arrogant, discrediting review.
Boring as a NASA launch?!! Peeps going into space is awesome.
This is a bad review....what a downer.
I want to bring up a comment I heard somewhere else relating to reviews. This isn't against Tom, per-say, but against reviews in general. What we're given isn't a case of "what's in front of them" what's given, a lot of the time, is what's missing and how it could be better. While this isn't a bad approach, the price comments and the "lack of special features" does take away from a well balanced review. I'm not a huge Tom fan, but the majority of his arguments as to what makes the game "deserving" of a 3.0 are pretty sound. And I disagree with him :)
Can evey that keeps bashing Tom just stop if you dont like it then just go on a different review or something because hes every right about this game and i bet if Maxwell or Kevin or anyone else played this game they would say it to short for 10 dollars and that its Dull, uninspired actions so just stop were will this get you not a free game not money your just making your self mad
McShea is the kind of guy that gets off on telling little kids there is no Santa. This is an old school beat'em up no different than Final Fight, Double Dragon, Captain Commando, and Bad Dudes. The idea of an arcade game is to voraciously separate children from their parents quarters. Of the aforementioned arcade classics at least 3 of them involve kidnapping as a the entire premise of the plot. There is not time for a deep and rewarding story line in an arcade cabinet. The player would be spending time watching cut scenes instead of feeding the beast.
