My sim keeps freezing, even though plumbob continues to spin above his head. I have graphic settings on high and never had this problem before. I can run other games fine (Skyrim, Mass Effect Series, etc.)... I have main game and main expansions installed up to Late Night. Thoughts appreciated...
Game is set to auto patch.

try this and see if it helps:
Reset your Sim. Open the cheat box and type in:
resetsim full Sim name
ie, 'resetsim John Jackson'
the sim will be reset with neutral motives and no moodlets. they will also be sent back home if they are not already there

it's a common problem, multiple reasons, and unfortunately EA doesn't seem to feel like fixing it..
search these forums, or just scroll down and look at all the "freezing" topics..
also can search the web i'm sure you'll find the same info.
there is a "mod" that can help a LOT. that is actually what the mod was made for, it doesn't actually mod the game, just helps it run smoother.. it's called "overwatch" by twallan / nraas industries.
go to this site, for that mod and many other great (and safe) ones:
http://nraas.wikispaces.com/and more specifically for that "mod"
http://nraas.wikispaces.com/Overwatchi also suggest his story progression, it's much better then EA's built in one.
i personally use about half of his mods, never had a problem with them and they improve the game more then any expansion, for free.

How do I install Overwatch? I extracted the PACKAGE file to "C:\Users\Shane\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages", but it is not showing up in launcher, even though in-game it said file was detected... What can I do?

If it popped up once the game loaded up, it may be working. It's not something you really need to install via the launcher.
http://nraas.wikispaces.com/Overwatch+Phase+Five+InteractionsCheck that so you can get an idea on how to use the commands. If you don't see anything at City Hall, Computer or when you click an Active Sim, then maybe something was wrong during the installation somehow. I only use the Master Controller mod for other things, so not sure if this one is different at all.

Does Overwatch run in-game automatically? How does it work?

Package files run automatically. The launcher only show sims3pack files (which can be deleted once installed, as they are converted to package files when installed). As the poster above said, if you click on a sim and the "NRAAS" menu shows up, it installed properly.
Don't expect miracles from overwatch---it can help with the freezing a bit, but the game WILL freeze again eventually, especially if you run in FF for any length of time. The only "cure" for that is to pause the game once in a while to let the CPU "catch-up". That's just the way the game is, and as was said above EA won't do anything about it, or even admit the problem exists. To be honest, although the problem is annoying, it doesn't really affect the game all that much, especially since you should be pausing the game once in a while anyway just to give orders.

Is the problem from the patches? I had this game running fine before, but then had to reformat and I reinstalled it just the other day. I had it set to auto update game... Would I be ok if I turn auto-update off?

The patches neither help nor hurt. It's been that way since Day 1. If it was "running fine", you simply didn't notice it, or added something new (besides the patch), or have been running it for some time longer than you did before.

I am pretty sure its patch issue. I had the freezing, and had patching set to automatic. I then decided to uninstall game and expansions and reinstall them, but set game to not auto update. I have not had problem since... When I did have the freezing, I noticed it right away. Maybe doing what I did will help you guys too

You can't run the expansions without the patches (each EP/SP gives a new patch---automatically on the DVD when you install). And believe me, the vanilla game runs worse without at least patching to #14. I'm only patched to #19 (right after Late Night) and have the occasional freezing problem. If the freezing is still in later patches, it is not caused by the patches, it is caused by the expansions itself.
I don't know why you think you have discovered the "cure" for this when everyone else knows about this (and you yourself admitted ignorance in your first post) and hasn't been able to completely make it go away (as I said, you either don't notice it, or think a 5 second freeze every game day is "nothing"

.

I know it updates when you install expansions and such, but after I installed Late Night, I turned auto update off. I havent noticed it since, played at least an hour straight without notice freezing.

Playing an hour is trivial. The game freezes the longer you play it, due to the save file getting larger (meaning that later sessions will freeze more often), and poor coding/memory leaks (meaning the current session will freeze more often). Not installing the patches is impractical for most people, as each expansion needs a new patch, and each new patch means new mod versions for people that use mods.
To reiterate: The patches aren't the reason for the freezing; the game is the reason for the freezing.
