All of the comments and suggestions I've seen are to go alchemy heavy for dark runs. This is the tree that I put the least amount of points into out of the 4 for my first play on normal.
Barely used any potions or oils at all. The idea of having to do so isn't terribly interesting.
Anybody out there do Dark without a focus in alchemy? Those of you who did focus on it, was that just the direction you wanted to go or was it a dark specific necessity or strategy?

I've completed this game twice on dark mode. And both times i completely ignored Alchemy. Bascially maxing out combat and getting half way through the magic tree is the ideal setup for me.
Thats just my opinion

I just went through it on Dark focusing mostly on Swordsmanship and didn't have a problem. I played on Hard first though, so a jump from Normal to Dark would be a bit more noticeable.

I've played this game on dark with all 3 trees and as long as you know how to play the game and use everything such as potions/oils and signs then any build is viable but of course some may have it easier. Magic or Sword build has one advantage over alchemy during a certain boss fight in Act 2. As long as you have 1 or 2 points in the roll skill then then any build is good
But you can build an alchemy build that will outdamage any of the two trees, by level 20 the game becomes really easy (assuming you're already comfortable with the game mechanics)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79bGYLXgq-cShows how deadly the build is on Act 3 bosses, it is on hard mode BTW but trust me there isn't much difference with this build between Hard and Insane/Dark

Alchemy slows down the pace of the game, makes it more involved, which I like. I don't do alchemy runs to make the game easier, I do it to make me feel more like a witcher. Since you lack good sword or magic skills, you really need to prepare well before battles otherwise you're totally gimped.

This, I am doing an heavy Alchemy run with most of my points going into Alchemy and 7 points going into Swordmanship and Magic. Having a blast at the moment.

I agree. I like to get all the sword damage +, vitality +, adrenaline ability, damage resist from swordsman tree. Then get all the good stuff for quen, aard and igni from the magic tree. That setup is an unstoppable witcher.
