I was just playing as a cat (single cat for 20 years maybe), and even though I was killing and eating things, my hunger gauge never increased... so I died out. I can't think that this is an intentional way to get you to mate...or is it? Has anyone else experienced this? Is there something I am missing that I should be doing?
Also playing the Japanese version, if that really matters

well if you were paying attention to the info pop ups you would have noticed them telling you that your stats were decreasing due to old age. it starts happening at 15 years wich also makes your hunger gauge start flashing red. every year after that you can see your hunger stat start dropping and at 20 years it ceases to exist and you then die of old age when your life bar reaches zero. so yes it is an intentional way of getting you to mate.

Yeah... after about 14-15 years, your hunger gauge starts depleting due to old age to the point where it can get to 000/000. It means you have to mate, dooood~

Well, things I didn't know. Guess I have to actually read the pop-ups, which means I guess I have to learn to read Japanese faster. Thanks all.
