Johnny, not only you don't have the patience but you also don't have the skill of a 10 year old in the 90s to play such a game. Also this isn't kinect, voice commands don't work. lol

I could hear this guy speaking all day long haha. (btw this game sums up my childhood and he DEFINITELY didn't get the hang of walking/jumping lol)

TR1's controls were geometrically precise...if you learned them adequately. Sounds like you didn't.

TR was CORE, and the CORE games were legend. CD might have continued in that tradition had they not denigrated TR with "humanizing" Lara, stupid quicktime events, and stupid story retcon. It's telling that anniversary is the best TR game CD has made (minus the shoe-horned new story retcon). TR needs to rediscover its roots in those early heady days.

In conclusion, you can go ahead and join the other guy in the "what's wrong with gaming today" club for your lack of historical perspective:p (jking)

There was a technique to nailing the jumping, if you didnt get it, the game was rough.

I think this was the first 3D game I played...possibly... it was at a friend's house. We were about 6 or 7 and pretty scared of the bears. We had to get his older sister to deal with them.

This was entertaining. Now I remember why I never got very far in these games.

I remember the frustration of this game until you really got the hang of it, even when you got the hang of it, simple jumps used to take a million attempts! His anger isn't unjust!

Wow some people here are taking this way too seriously. I for one think it was hilarious, and really made my Monday morning, cheers Johnny! :)

While I did love this game, the controls were horrible if you were not used to them, and I can imagine playing them for the first time AFTER you have played third person games of today with pretty much perfect controls, you would find Tomb Raider controls infuriating.

Will you be playing through the second Tomb Raider next? ;)

I don't think people need to pay that much attention to what Johnny says or the way he expresses his humor something, so much so that to criticize him. What we've got here is one of the greatest games ever. I suppose most people including myself who have played the original Lara Croft Tomb Raider didn't play it much better than Johnny back then, well... if not worse. Seeing videos like this reminds us of our childhood and the glory of a series that once shined back in the day, and how we struggled with keyboard/controller when we first played it. And those feelings are awesome, which I believe is the true essence of this video that may seem awkward at times. :D

I don't see why everyone keeps bashing him.  I think he's funny as hell, and this was just a flashback to all the control issues I remember so fondly from those old Tomb Raider games.

not sure what ur doing, it's not really funny, that game was awesome when it came out and even then i didn't have control problems, mb ur holding the controller wrong or just not trying now who ever wanted to play this game will not cause he will think the controls are bad +_+ good job  

Johnny you are a knob and not funny. I was expecting an intelligent video on what is considered one of the greatest games of all time. Your lack of skill and talent showcases your inexperience with video games. I bet your first console was a N64 and Mario is you favourite game. Go back to reviewing DS games.

This game gave way to any 3rd person shooter out there. This game is a classic. The problem is that it is almost 20 years old, so no shit you're going to find this game not up to today's standards. If you had played this game back when it was released you, like everyone else, would've loved it. Schooled!

PS: There's a button to slowly walk on the edges and then you can get the jump 100% of the time. It's all grid based so you can't miss...

Hmm... I still play part 2 it aged very well, still awesome big levels, and still didn't find all the secrets nealy 20 years later... Only noobs can't play these games, they control way better then most 3d games back then. It was copied for a reason, just like Cod, Halo, GoW, UC...

I can't watch this. I did have a lot of respect for you and your great british sense of humor Johnny but that kind of dwindled a bit when I started this video and realised you were just trashing the controls and animations of an all time classic simply due to the fact that it's not up to more modern standards. This game is not far off 20 years old!! Back in the day it was epic, obviously if you've never played it playing it now isn't going to have the same magical effect on you as it did on us back then, in fact it will seem kind of shoddy sure, but what I really don't get is how someone working in the gaming industry has never played any of the many games from one of the biggest franchises of all time. How does that happen!? And how did you get a job for gamespot with such a limited gaming background? :P

When I build my 1st PC ($1500), the local shop also gave me three games for free. Diablo, Red Alert and Tomb Raider. I still remember a lot of things from the game, like how to obtain the Uzi's or the epic atmosphere of Atlantis... These were the days when game developers were able to innovate...

man i remember this one too... i never really was a fan of the series (or 3d platformers) but it had its moments... what i remembered most were the secrets hidden inside laras house, they were always fun (plus the shower scene, damn hormones during puberty, had me playing TR2 almost non stop crouching) :D

This game is an absolute legend that revolutionized the genre at that time. It's nothing less than epic and mesmerising in so many ways. Although I agree on the conrols being clunky, I must say that you would have had a much better experience if you had used a gamepad and taken some time to get a handle on the TR's mechanics.

Honestly, not to disregard the cIassics as there wouldn't be a TR series without them. But since I started the series fairly late (first game being Legend on the GameCube), I ended up getting the remake on the Wii, which I think is great.

your should have read the controls before playing this game. I remember confusing with jumping mechanics and falling while playing it for the very first few times, but soon it was my favorite game. I enjoyed this series for years. It has very solid and intuitive controls. Once you learn them you only fall in haste.

I still have Tomb Raider for my Saturn and I absolutely love it! Controls are a bit awkward and don't stand the test of time very well, but still a awesome experience, which I enjoy repeating from time to time. Even the score was epic! I remember when I first encountered the Dinosaur, which caught me by surprise, and had me running rapidly for cover! Aaah. There's been some good ones, and some very poor ones( looking at you Tomb Raider Chronicles-Dreamcast), but this is still the best one IMO .

Poor Johnny, that was very evil of them to make you play Tomb Raider 1 as your first experience of the franchise, I was forever slipping off ledges when I played it when it first came out, and i lost count how many times I tried the jumps at the end of the video before i made it. Don't give up, I suggest playing Tomb Raider Anniversary, it's the modern remake of TR1. It looks and plays so much better and you don't feel like you're having to fight the controls all the time. I guarantee you'll fall in love.

First, you are so true, you don't have the patience of a 10 years old back in the 90ies.

Now, let me try to help:
 

Up, Down, Left and right for directions, Ctrl to interact and grab on ledges, Alt to jump and swim, Shift to walk (and also prevents lara from falling over ledges), Space to draw/Holster weapons, Num0 to look around and examine the surroundings, 'End' to roll on the floor and revers direction and i set F for flares, and C for crouch, can't remember what was the default!

1st) To pull and push objects, you first press 'Ctrl' to start interacting with the object and then you press the direction you want, 'up' to push, 'back' to pull. NOTE: DO NOT PRESS FORWARD FIRST THEN 'CTRL' OR LARA WILL CLIMB UP THE OBJECT INSTEAD OF PUSHING IT.

2nd) 'Alt' is to jump and swim, so if you are in front of an object and want to climb on it you first press 'forward' then 'Ctrl' to climb it, BUT if the object is too high for lara to climb it right away with 'Ctrl' then you jump first, so you press 'Alt' (WITHOUT PRESSING ON ANY THING ELSE) and then you follow it by 'Ctrl' to grab on the ledge when lara is at the maximum height of her jump then follow it by Up to climb up. (you can also press shift while climbing up for a cool acrobatic climbing). ;)

Now what's if you want to run and jump on another platform in front of you?, well there is two methods to do that:
when the other platform is near you simply just do a 'hop', so you just press 'Shift' walk to the edge and then press both 'Alt' and forward at the same time to do a hop.

When the other platform is far and  you want to do a run and jump then you do what any normal person would do in such case!... You first walk to the edge then take a few steps back and then run and jump, that's how any one would do it and that is how you do it in the game as well... So you first press 'Shift', walk to the edge and then release 'Shift' and take a step or two back depending on how much space you have behind you, if you have small space you can take one step without 'Shift' and then another step with 'Shift' or even two steps with 'Shift' and then you run and instantly press jump (make sure to time it, not too early but also not too late) try it a few times till you get the hang of it and learn the timing.

3rd) I know that this seems annoying but you'll get used to it, to interact with buttons, or door keys, etc... you need to face them right directly, so use 'Shift' to walk to the button and then turn to face it directly first then press 'Ctrl' to interact, also note that while holding 'Shift' pressing right or left will make lara take a step right or left instead of turning so you can adjust your position easily. Same thing goes to interacting with button or door keys underwater.

4th) Combat... When you are in a fight always try to get a higher ground, and also do not stand in the same place, lara is so acrobatic, you can use that to your advantage.

You can jump with Left or right to jump to the sides, you can jump with backward to make a back flip, you can jump forward while holding 'Shift' to do a dive, you can press 'End' to roll on the floor and quickly change direction, and you can also combine 'End' the roll action with any of your jumps to revers direction in mid-air, so you can jump backward and while doing the back flip press 'End' in mid-air to revers direction so you can do a quick escape, or you can run toward your target and jump forward over it while doing a roll in mid-air and lad on the other side while still facing your target, you can also use a combination of all of these while running around to dodge your attacker, get on higher ground, become a hard moving target, use your surroundings to evade attacks and take out your target while it tries hardly to catch up with you. (Note: you can be firing your weapons at your target while doing all of these acrobatics, except for the dive jump).

5th) ALLWAYS, and allow me to say it again, ALWAYS remember to press 'Num0' to look around and investigate the location and examine your surroundings for hints of the direction you should be heading to or for secrets or hidden paths in the location around you.

And also always remember to save, this is an old game where saving manually every two seconds were a must. (Oh i miss those good old days).

I can't think of any thing else you might need to know about at the moment, i hope i manage to help a bit and i hope you would give it a second go after learning more about it.
