Is this possible? I was playing with a friend and the game automatically threw me into a pro-emperor faction.

I think you can change factions after a certain point, but I'm not sure.

Really? No one has an answer?

They have republican infantry in the encyclopedia so I'm assuming it is possible. Around the beginning of 1868 the game will ask you to be pro-emperor or pro-shogunate (depending on which faction you chose) or whether you want to attempt to take control of Japan yourself. I'm assuming trying to take over the whole country yourself leads to your clan become a Republic? Someone verify this.

You can not opt for a Republic while in Co-op campaign since starting a Republic means you instantly dislike every other clan that supports a reign ruled either by an emperor or a shogun.

You can while in face to face campaign.

ps : Next patch will fix all desyncs.
