Transformers: The Game User Review

Boring and repetitive, with minor features that fans of the series would care little about...

Difficulty:
Very Easy
Time Spent:
10 to 20 Hours
The Bottom Line:
"All flash, no substance"
This game is what many would expect: a video game with a film branding that expects a quick release and something that is intended mostly for children and some die-hard fans of the animated series, toy-line, films, and so on. This game, is unfortunately something that is clearly expected to be, and nothing else.

Story: 7 (The same as the movie, but the player can be either side, but it doesn't matter on which.)
Graphics: 7.5 (The game on all platforms look very similar and do what they were meant to do, but nothing remarkable.)
Music: 6 (Also something very expected, and average to hear, but tolerable.)
Controls: 5 (Very repetitive game-play, and everything does it's purpose at an average quality, but as said before, it's expected.)
Sound: 5.9 (Voice work is below average, yet the veteran voice actors from the film and animated series do well, while the people imitating the characters from the film do...bad.)

The story starts off with the 'Autobots' and 'Decepticons' traveling to earth in search of a device called the 'AllSpark', which is said to be the life of their race, the Autobots intend to use it to bring back life to their home planet, while the Decepticons intend to take over the world (and "rescue" their incapacitated leader in the process). The story is exactly the same as the film it's based on, which is tolerable, but also at times uninteresting and uninspired.

The game-play is the biggest flaw in this game, due to the repetitive combat, missions, and...(That is most of what this game is.). The game lets you chose between playing the Autobots or Decepticons, which are different, but still similar, the main missions carry out what happens in the film, while the side missions are usually based on unlocking minor features (clips from the original animated series, and others post that, biographies about the main characters and or devices, and color repaints for some characters, and two "special" features for two important characters [costume-like settings for Optimus Prime and Megatron]), but these aren't worth the time of unlocking and playing through the game each time, especially with how laid down the missions are, it gives the player no interest, unless they are children, or simply fans of the series, which of course isn't a bad thing, but also not interesting. There are also small devices needed to be unlocked, as for special challenges per level, and pieces of a puzzle in order to unlock more of those features I listed above. While some old pieces of the past will take an interest in the younger Transformers generation, it will not last long.

This game is of course a game that is only meant to simply promote the film, which is understandable, but of course not necessarily needed to be taken as a serious video game (most video games in development for a film are usually rushed, have a limited budget, or have limits on how innovative a game can be, which unfortunately ruins a game's experience.).

Opening sequence to Transformers Tataki for PS2. This is an import game that was never released in the USA. I replaced the audio with the theme song to the original TF Movie from 1986.
