It may be counterproductive posting this on a union forum, but I think with this particular union's history, perhaps someone here might agree with me. From the "Zelda and Off-Topic Union," to the "Soul Caliber and Off-Topic Union," to all of the other well-thought-out unions that thirteen-year-old kids come up with as soon as they reach level six; users of this site have been plagued with these spam factories for over a decade. Here is just some food for thought:
  • There is no such thing as a free lunch. Every waste of space needs to be paid for, and these funds come from those lovely ads that we see every time we load the homepage, and these funds could be better used by hiring another staff member, adding more features, or even cutting down on those blessed advertisements.
  • The majority of unions peter out within a month and become completely stagnant.
  • Noone likes the disapointment of opening the old gamespot inbox to read one's messages only to find if full of union invites and send-all union messages.
  • Gamespot has no desire to fix the issues with unions. Remember SentinelRV's movement to fix the union system half a decade ago? Did Gamespot even pretend to take action, even if to appease Sentinel and keep his invaluable HeadCrab Union on the site? If the staff is so apathetic to allow their largest and most active union to slip between their fingers, why even support the things?
  • Every post dumped into a terminally ill union forum is a post that could have contributed to it's respective Game Forum, where people really go to get information for games. If you have a question about Skyward Sword, are you going to visit the "Zelda Alliance and Off-Topic Union,"  or the Skyward Sword forum?
There are some unions who are productive in regards to original and useful ideas and discussions (such as this one), but could it not be replaced with a respective user-run forum?

I would have to disagree with scrapping unions, especially since for the first time in a long time now, unions have received an update: union levels and emblems are now working. Although I have no proof, I do believe more is to come.

HCU is only inactive now because of the lack of Half Life news. Once we hear more of Half Life 3, I'm pretty sure HCU will be incredibly active like it was years ago. The same problems HCU faces as a union are not exclusive; all games unions become inactive when there is no more news about their upcoming games.

I wouldn't call fixing an issue that they've ignored for eons an "update." And I do love THIS particular board, but if could be replaced with a user-created board.

News on a new Half Life game would certainly boost activity around here.

you have great points and i agree with you for the most part aside from the fact that some users post exclusively in unions because they enjoy the group of posters who frequent those boards as opposed to the game and general forums.

I agree with TC.   Unions are a waste of wep space for Gamespot,  and I'm amazed they're allowing these to still exist,  despite the lack of updates and user activity.   This is 2013,  and some of these Unions bavent been active in over 7 years!   Delete them.

I haven't even logged in GS for nearly 2 years; I am merely here as a result of cleaning up my steam account. And most of my gaming news comes from the more underground sites like GAF.

INDEED UNIONS ARE DEAD WEIGHT
