It really depends on my mood and what game I'm playing. So I don't have a specific playlist.

The best music to listen to when doing some fragging is a little Bach or Beethoven. Don't ask me why, just do this:

Mute the game so it would be totally silent. Then start playing the classical. Then get on with the fragging. It's almost poetic.

It depends on what kind of gaming mood I'm in. If I really feel like doing my best that night, say playing Rainbow 6 Vegas, I turn the music off and use my surround sound headphones to hear people creeping around a corner. I used the same tactics in SCDA to great success, you really can hear those noisy spies moving around on the venilation ducts if you actually turn off the music. I know in SCDA it would be impossible to hear anything if a spy managed to hack an entire file, the music would go nuts, then your teammates would start screaming, and in that time you could have heard the spy running outside. Surround sound can really be deadly if you use it right.

If I'm playing a more fast paced shooter, like Halo 2 or a racing game like Burnout Revenge, I'll toss on the hard stuff. Some Disturbed, Metallica (the 80s stuff mostly), Guns n roses, Motley Crue, AC/DC, Testament, Angel Dust, Iced Earth, all that good stuff.

I listen to a bit of everything....most of the time I use my Zune radio and put on the headphones.. Halo 2 is always Pearl Jam though.  Nothing like rifle butting people to PJ TEN!!  Some games I have to listen to the sound...Splinter Cell as someone stated is a great example.  Sometimes I jam the Perfect Dark Zero music to other games....that soundtrack works with almost anything!

I got a red ring from my 360 on Valentines!!

Weird, i do that from time to time to.

But i like to stick to retro bands:
Blondie (Huge Blondie fan here , Debbie was Very Good looking in her day)
Duran Duran
Motley Crue
AC/DC
Queen
Van Halen
Led Zepplin
Pink Floyd
The Beatles (Nothing beats "All you need is love" while blowing off some heads, lol)

I enjoy some bands from today (or at least, bands that are still around today) also:
Green Day
U2
The Killers
Billy Talent

and yes, The Theme from Star Trek even......

If the sound is good and not repetitive ingame then I might stick to the game's music.
If it doesn't:
- Red hot chili Peppers (huge fan)
- Placebo
- Feist
- Novastar
- Supergrass
- Supertramp
- Queen

The songs with rythm that can bring me in a good mood.
---------------------------------------------------------------
My Predictions:
- Banjo 3
( 9.2 )
- Mass Effect
( 9.0 )
-
Fable 2 ( 8.8 )
-
Halo 3 ( 10 ) [ IF they make an original and unexpected ending ]

Wasn't the commercial for Black? I hear what you're saying though... opera while playing is pretty sweet sometimes especially considering it makes my neighbors nervous.

Nervous? Why? Did they get mugged by an opera singer once?

But yes, opera works, too. It makes things so interesting... Like I said, poetic...

It makes them nervous cause they think some kind of psychopath is living next door. They hear the shooting going on and the opera blasting... either that or YES, they were mugged by an opera star. Either one...

lol, yes that's pretty much my situation. The endodontist who did my root canal listens to opera while doing his work... often singing along. He's really making me consider becoming a dentist.
