Starting to see reviews already. Game Informer (print edition) Giving it a 7 out of 10. Sounds like more of the same mediocrity we come to know and love with our favorite franchise. Still looking forward to playing it can't wait to give my impression and hear the impression's of others.

Make sure to give spoiler warnings if needed.

I am actually eagerly awaiting the arrival of Downpour, although not expecting it to be amazing. But I guess I am just waiting for another excuse to play a silent hill game . I read a review already and to basically sum up what it said was, good puzzles, decent soundtrack, poor combat, poor story, underwhelming graphics and repetitive monsters. Poor story, that straight away makes you think 'oh god no', but hey this is just the opinion of one reviewer.

Yeah I'm stil looking forward to it too. I'm a little bummed by what I read about the core combat in the game though.

Poor story & poor puzzles pretty much warrant a used copy in my book. Still, I'd appreciate it if someone could scan the GI review and post the links here.

EDIT: Nevermind, found them here. I don't often complain about scores but this read like a 5 or a 6.

I'm not expecting to have my mind blown, but it would be nice to have at least 'something' positive to talk about again.. the passion of the fanbase has been so wasted the past few years, it should really be focused on discussions and interpretations instead of perpetual disappointment and frustration.

You know what bothers me the most? That a non-horror game such as I Am Alive implemented better survival mechanics than all modern "survival/horror" games put together.

I agree with this. I was actually thinking; what would you guys think if a SH game that played just like I am alive?. It came to me earlier as I first started playing it, the use of the map marking off un passable areas and the dead environment etc. I thought to myself 'wow this game would be even more awesome if it was a horror game, and these people were monsters instead'.

It would make a perfect combination of survival (which I think this game does extremely well) and horror. Very basic gameplay, that when encountering enemies makes you kinda nervous of death and failure (cause that's how this game made me feel). Implementing its system of retries and checkpoints. Of course i'm not talking about implementing the climbing sections and the first person gun play, but basically have the gun play the same but in a third person perspective. Also of course like I am Alive have the limited resources (which obviously the early games did well too). I think this would be a good way for the series to return to one of the things that made SH so great back in the day, without going back to the tank controls (which of course wouldn't go down well with alot of critics etc, and would automatically make them slam the game)

I think developers that look to make future Silent Hill titles could learn alot from I am Alive. I dunno guys maybe im crazy, but I think it would work great. Unless I most probably haven't thought this through properly, which I tend to do sometimes

Yikes!

Also that was a weirdly written review I thought. Eddie Murphy movie references aside, it seems overtly bitter. It says I was a fan now I'm just fed up lol

I'm about 2 hours in, and this is not a 4.5 game, not at all.

But is it a glitchy bug-ridden combat-oriented americanized mess?

Although I will get a used copy eventually, I find that really hard to believe.

Initially I was going to ask if you have had any 1st hand experience with the game, thus far the graphics which have never been a factor for my enjoyment of a game has been a bit choppy at times, maybe due to the semi-seamless exploration the game features, dunno, in any case after about an hour or so of play I encountered my 1st enemy and died, and died, and died. Call me stubborn for trying to tank them, but goddamn you'll regret not smashing the block button unless the monster places a Kick-me sign on themselves, the Screamers thus far seem to be the Goombas and yet the most challenging of the enemies. After learning the new controls I've managed to blast through most of the enemies thus far. If I were to compare this game to another based solely on AI it would be Dark Souls, the enemies are cheap and plentiful.

As far as scares, without ruining too much for those of you waiting for a bargain, it uses uncommon and some common scare tactics that are good for a fright and a few seconds of panic though your character feels more helpless than previous protagonists and a smidge less than say... Henry T.

Story and Narrative are both slow in pace, perhaps I say this because the exact scale of the game is not known to me at this time, however if (When more likely) the story grabs the wheel and takes front seat I expect some leaps in logic, and setting. All in all this 'sandbox' experiment with the Silent Hill formula is quite a bit better than it could have been and as close to the Umpossible demands of the fanbase as I feel this gen 'will' get.

TL;DR If I were to see Tomm Hulet in danger he'd gets a Med-Kit, but certainly not an Ampule.

^ We get the good version with less combat & no Korn music. It's replaced by songs from Opeth's phenomenal 'Blackwater Park' album

@jpw2: C'mon lad, wait a little longer until you can buy it used. Don't fund Konami's next insult...

By the way, look at what the Twin Perfect guys are doing! (These are the very same gentlemen that brought us the three-hour in-depth documentary called 'The Real Silent Hill Experience')

Found this review of Downpour on Youtube by JustPushStart, I strongly disagree with the final score but thought it was a pretty decent review and worth posting.
