We had a blast with a new multiplayer mode and new vehicles in Epic's nearly loaded shooter.
LEIPZIG, Germany--We just got our hands on Unreal Tournament III at the Leipzig Games Convention 2007 and experienced a new multiplayer match type known as Warfare. We also experienced all the chaos and excitement contained in a Warfare match, wherein each side attempts to destroy the other's base. There isn't anything too complex about that, but before you can deal that final blow, you must execute a series of other blows by capturing nodes. When possessed, these nodes will render the enemy base vulnerable.
First, you must capture one of two neutral nodes in the middle of the map. Either of these will open the way to an assault on an enemy base, which must in turn be captured before the attack on the main base can begin. To backtrack a step, there is a third neutral base that doesn't have to be captured but yields powerful vehicles to its champions. Normally, capturing a base takes time, which can be shortened two ways: either with the link gun or an orb.
The link gun is a laser cannon that's part of the standard armory you'll pick up at any of the weapons nodes, which don't outfit you with just one gun, but nearly all of them. While the normal fire of the gun in question is devastating, its alternate fire can repair vehicles or shorten the amount of time it takes to turn a node. An orb, on the other hand, will immediately deliver a node to your possession as long as you deliver the orb to the node. Orbs spawn in your base, and you simply have to make it to an enemy or neutral base with one to capture it. But that's easier said than done because the orb is big and bright; it's a huge bull's-eye hovering right above your back. Enemies who see you with one will do anything they can to prevent you from delivering your powerful payload.
Fortunately, you won't have to schlep long, hostile distances with your orb because thanks to hoverboards, you won't have to do any schlepping at all. That's right, hoverboards are a standard part of every warrior's arsenal and can be hopped onto or off of with the push of a button. Don't get us wrong, you don't find them lying around bases or steal them from other players: You get your very own. And they are unbelievably useful. Although vehicles do routinely spawn at each of the bases, you'll never again be forced to wait minutes for one just for the sake of a ride. That whole, lame element of vehicular online shooters has been completely defeated by the hoverboard.
Aside from its obvious utility, the hoverboard is fun to ride and even behaves a bit like a real snowboard. At one point, we found ourselves going way too fast over what looked like a very fatal drop. It was too late to stop, but because the slope was jagged and uneven, we were able to simply hop down a little to a lower part of the cliff then gradually make our way to the bottom, jump turning, just as you would on a snowboard.
Aside from the board, the only new vehicle we piloted was actually a turret on rails that we used to defend one of our bases. It was mostly a simple matter of blasting away at enemies with its high-powered laser cannons, but it was kind of cool to move along the track to both avoid incoming fire and cover two sides of the base at once. We also jumped in a pretty spiffy jet fighter, although we got shot down by an even spiffier rocket soon after takeoff. We never got to pilot the coolest vehicle we saw because it was coming straight for us under the control of the enemy. It looked like a big, rolling hamster ball, except it had whip chains it could lash about. We don't know what it's called--just that it hurts.
The guns we toyed with were all classic Unreal stalwarts, including the minigun, flak cannon, and rocket launcher. The graphics were, as you might imagine, also stellar, so there's no news on either the guns or graphics fronts. But make sure to stay tuned because as soon as we hear or play anything new regarding this lethal-looking shooter, you'll be the first to know.
Um... PaulioRed - why not have it all? "Slightly better graphics? or a adrenaline pumped experience on a 40inch+ tv with surround sound?" How about, considerably better graphics, a higher degree of sensitivity in movement, a comfy couch, a 46" 1080p (which a PC with the right grafx card can do natively) and a nice 7.1 surround? All can be done with a PC, and more... All these peripherals you're talking about aren't unique to console gaming. I know the topic of controller vs. mouse/keyboard is hotly debated, but I think most people will agree that mouse > controller for FPS'.
You won't need ageia card for the game, just a dual core. I think they will have enough options you can play with to get it to run decent on most somewhat newer systems. Physics cards I think will probably be short lived as video card makers will just put the same thing built into the video cards, and at this point dual or quad cores can handle most physics anyways.
That's why we have controllers for the PC =-D. Btw, game companies has to make games more efficient for PCs. I think they're getting too lazy lately because of the immense power of the PC. Some of the graphics of this year's PC titles are similar to the ones 3 or 4 years ago. So for the game companies, stop being lazy.
Does any one know if the ageia card will be required or the UT3 engine will also support the Havok engine ? I really have not seen any case where the ageia thing really made a major difference.
g3n3r41xan the unreal engine is flexible when it comes to lower settings. Take a look at how bioshock did. Lower end graphics card can run the game fine. It was also made from unreal engine 3. :0 therefore i think you will be able to play the game but it will look exactly like ut2004 on high settings....on low settings in ut3. :) numessiah your set :) 3Dpaper yes hover boards lol. I hated having to walk. Esp when all the selfish retards have taken off with all the rides. Heck esp when loosing and no nods to spawn to. :0 OMg . thats y onslaught sucked for me.buuuut now. now the funs starts JoeSSJ3 the mod community feature will be built in the game. So there is a menu to download all new content. Most of ut2k4 mods were online and i had to search for them.
lol im a hardcore ut fan. Laser Gaming mouse 2200dpi vs Ps3 or X360 controller lol :). Senstivity and smoothness set just right..Button configuration for each primary weapon :)!..Bring it console guys. I'll crash u. Oh dont even think about going head to head with me and my shock rifle. Omg i can feel my blood boiling, my hands are shaking..atlast it is finaly here. NO more wait. All ugraded and ready. IM ready ......8800gts 640mb,2gbram and my core duo 2. Thats all i need ladies...YOu see me ,you Run!
mouse and keyboard are ok but controllers feel more comfortable, and i'd much rather play a console for the better all around experience rather than have a tiny bit more graphics power. Slightly better graphics? or a adrenaline pumped experience on a 40inch+ tv with surround sound? think the choice is pretty obvious to me!
damn this game looks amazing, the graphics are outstanding. ill defineatly get this game on PC but i need to do upgrade first, which i will.
specs Nvidia 8800 GTS (640mb) AMD Athlon 64 X 2 3.2ghz Kingston 4GB Ram Vista Ultimate Hopefully I should be able to run this game with all settings on high.
specs 8800gts 640mb(yeepy) Core Duo 2 1.84ghz 2gb ram Vista Premium Ok here is good advice to all to play dx10 games from now and the 12 months to come on a cheap machine at a good performance. Buy any Core Duo 2 Processor (CoreDuo2 E4400 at 75pounds(Price) ). From Ebuyer.com At 164pounds(Price) Buy 8800gts 320mb ( Innovision 3D 8800GTS 320MB GDDR3 DVI PCI E Graphics). From Ebuyer.com Dont buy a 8600Gts! its around 124pounds but the performance is cut down very badly.8600 is just about half of the 8800gts's power. Save some extra change for the 8800gts 320mb Buy 1gb ram (32pounds). Ram speed must be 800mhz. Dont get 677mhz speed. (OCZ 1GB DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 Memory ). From Ebuyer.com Remember its DDR2 not DDR1. Check on your mother Board. Buy an extra 1gb at a later date when you get more money. Buy when ut3 comes out. Oh a note to all who need to know how the gpu industry has screwd us is if u buy a 8600 u really still can only run games at a bit lower specs compared to the 8800 series. Might also mean u disable some dx10 features to play smoothly so the game might not look like dx10. I realised this long ago when i opted for a radeon x1650pro over a radeon x1800. When supreme commander showed up i wanted to cry. I could play on high so long as i had less than roughly 300 units(enemy included) on the screen. I shot high this time and bought the 8800gts. So happy
the 8800 alone costs nearly as a much as a PS3. So why upgrade, get a PS3 instead and play this beauty. :) Now I need to find a way to play Bioshock, eeeek!
Im going to buy this on PC. On PC UT was born and on PC its going to live on. Cant have competetive play on a PS3, hah!
Cant wait for UT3 to come out, although not sure which to get as i have 8800gts with xfi, and a ps3. Will probably go with PC version due to better sound on xfi. At the end of the day mouse and keys, will always rule over controllers.
this game looks effing sweet. glad they are separating the online keyboard/mouse players from the controller players to even the odds up... i like a good keyboard/mouse setup, but i'll probably be playing this on ps3 and prefer to just use the controller and suffer the loss of tighter accuracy and faster aiming. the hoverboard sounds rad. can't wait.
I've made the leap into investing in a top notch computer and it turns out to be worth it. I'll always stay on the pc simply because of mods and maps. Some of those racing ut2004 maps are legendary! Pharaoh raceway forever! also L15_eric_Wavo. Sounds like you " avent usd any of da englsh language bt thinks dis snds kl."
lol as much as i love this game and when it comes out i can afford it but there is one major problem, i need to do a major upgrade on my computer in order to run this. my computer at the moment runs UT2004 at max settings very smoothly but i doubt UT3 will even run even on low settings on my current computer.
its works with a mouse and keyboard on the ps3. which is great i will still buy it for my pc just because i can play it in 2500*1900 and eax hd 4 sounds good too
w00t bring on UT3, im happy its on 360 as well as PC and ps3 cause my PC wouldnt run it and..well i dont have a PS3, its looking awesome.
i agree with ShirkDawg. a mouse and keyboard are great for accuracy but they juts don't feel right compared to a controller
The mouse and keyboard aren't even fun to use. They're more accurate but I'd much rather use a controller to play most games than sit at a computer.
I didn't mean to generalize anyone by my earlier comments, i just said that I play both, and i actually like the control better, but I'm tired of guys bashing console shooters just because of the different control. Oh, and I will still own you, one and all.
Looks sweet. Have to wait a couple extra months to get it on the 360 but it's a win/win for PS3 and 360 owners.
that sounds great i am a really fan of ut but im afraid that there wont be anything new because warfare looks the same as onslaught to me
sounds kick ass. my only fear is that too many people use a keyboard and mouse too pwn me. still gonna be awesome. :)
UT3 looks to be great, and I hope the mod community is way more active this time than they were with UT2K4.
Ding! Ding! Ding! AL13NK1LL3R you are a winner! What do you win!? Some facts. XBOX 360'S CAN HAVE JUST AS MANY FRAME RATE ISSUES AS PS3!!!!! But i like your picture matrial arts vs. modern arts
i want this game soo bad, i hope they dont have soo many glitches like gears... but i have to wait till jan or feb for this game to come on 360!! and slaya, no it wont be better cause mostly ps3 games always have framerate problems... so 360 version is goin be better. and yes i agree that this game is goin be wayy better then gears...
What makes this better is that interview with that Epic games developer who's saying that Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3 is better than GoW for the 360. Can't wait to download some mods on my PS3.
