The Ramblings of Me and my PC

  • 24Apr 08

    Arrrrgggghhhh!!!!

    The Feast, is ruined.....

So I was in the middle of upgrading my RAM the other day when I realized that my computer wasn't starting up....So naturally, I first thought that somehow my new RAM was keeping the system from firing up, or I mistakenly knocked a cable loose or something in my case.

So I cracked my PC open, and inspected EVERYTHING. I even put my old RAM back in, thinking this would fix the problem...No dice.

So after taking everything out of my case, motherboard and all, I determined that either my mobo or my PSU was dead. Usually the PSU goes dead before a mobo or a processor does, so I got a new power supply tester the next day. Tested the PSU and it was indeed dead. This thing cost me about $250 about 6 months ago, and thought it was quality enough that I wouldn't run into something like this. It is a Silverstone ST85F, 850W quad SLI capable power supply. Had great reviews and everything. I've had other power supplies that have lasted 5 years or more and are still going strong, but this one died in less than a year. Makes me think a little bit.

But anyways, I had to fax in a RMA request to their "tek" department and waited 2 days for them to send me my RMA number. Since this PSU weighs about 6 pounds, the shipping cost me like $20...what a hassle. Not sure how long its gonna take to get the bad boy back, but I'm dying without the ability to play games.

What really sucks was that I was in the middle of playing Assassin's Creed when all this happened....what a shame.

Hope this process doesn't take too long......

    Good Stuff

Soooo.....I've been playing some games non-stop for the past month or so and I've finished several games in this time frame.

I managed to finish Bioshock, Crysis and STALKER pretty much all in the same week a few weeks back and those games were amazing. Definitely looking forward to STALKER: Clear Sky as well as Bioshock 2 when those come out.

For now, I've got my sights set on Hellgate: London, Frontlines: FOW and I'm starting to play BF2142 again a little bit. I also tried to get into Prince of Persia: Sands of Time a little since there is supposedly a movie coming out sometime in the near future based on the game...so I wanted to know the background story before seeing it. Of course, its controls are keyboard and mouse based which makes the game somewhate awkward to play since it really should be a gamepad type of game...as are Warrior Within and Two Thrones.

Hellgate didn't get that stellar of reviews for reasons that really don't matter to me since I'm not a big MMO player. I play the game in single player mode since I don't really care to mingle with the hardcore players online. I'm playing it mainly because its by the same guys that made Diablo II back in the day that I played quite often. It has the same feel as Diablo except its in a 3D 1st/3rd person point of view. Same dynamics, but I like the fact that it isn't like your typical fantasy MMO games like WoW or Everquest. I play mostly FPS games, so this is right up my alley and I don't feel too geeky since it really isn't a fantasy based game. Lots of action, though it maybe repetetive at times...but so was Diablo, and that was an accalaimed game series.

Frontlines: FOW is kinda interesting. I like the feel of the game because its a lot like the Battlefield series...but it takes a different approach in that it isn't all just capturing the flag. It has a good storyline making the single player mode very enjoyable as well as a great multiplayer mode that doesn't whore out players to try and rank up...so the gameplay is more pure, and guys who play it are playing it for the love of the game...not stats. Though, if the integrated a point system like in BF, I wouldn't be upset either. The game has great graphics since its based on the UT3 engine, much like Bioshock...but they took it alittle farther and made it more dynamic. Has a more natural feel and the textures and different maps are very appealing to the eye. Depending on what mode you play, it seems that either the enemy is really easy to kill or not. In single player mode, even if you play on "hard" the enemies drop like flies within a couple shots..but on multiplayer, even with several direct hits to the body, the opponents still keep going...so I think there needs to be some balance there, or I suppose the game is designed like that so the other people who are playing don't get too discouraged. Either way, the game is great...its a good alternative to BF if you've played that for several years like me.

In other news, for the few that actually care about me personally, I'm still in school in the computer engineering program at George Mason University. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, though it is still about a year away. Graduating in 5 years when you're in the Electrical/Computer Engineering program is not out of the ordinary. Only about 15% of the people in the program graduate in 4 years because of the level of difficulty, scheduling and other hoops they make you jump through. My problem was mostly that I like(d) to party alot in my earlier years before I got married and had a kid...so some of those classes were pretty useless to me. As of lately, as the material got alot harder, I found myself retaking classes because I didn't spend enough time studying. But either way, I'm nearing the end of my run at Mason and am bout to start my senior project that will most assuredly drive me insane over the next year.
