Well it's almost that time of year so if you're thinking what games you want to buy this holiday here's a helpful list of games that came out this year.

Mass Effect 3 (PS3,360 and Wii-U)- If you liked Mass Effect 1 and 2, love sci-fi wrpgs or a fan of Bioware this game is right for you.

Max Payne 3(PS3,360,PC)- If you liked last gens Max Payne and Max Payne 2, love TPS (third person shooters) or a fan of R* this is one of their best games to date.

Dragon's Dogma(PS3,360)- If you liked games like Skyrim and Capcoms Monster Hunter this a fine combination of the two.

Borderlands 2(PS3,360,PC)- Remember Borderlands 1?, well here is the sequel and if you enjoyed the first one well Borderlands 2 does everything better than the first game.

Dishonored(PS3,360,PC)- A few years ago a game named Bioshock came out, if you remember Bioshock, Dishonored pretty much plays like Bioshock (minus the under water city thing).

Hotline Miami (PC/Steam)- Combine a gorgeous looking 8 bit top down shooter, 1980's electro soundtrack then you got a game like Hotline Miami, which if you liked Super Meat Boy you might enjoy Hotline Miami.

Assassin's Creed 3(PS3,360,PC)- If you played any Assassin's Creed game this gen then well you know how AC3 plays, if you haven't played any AC game yet, don't start with AC3 even though it's the best AC game in the series, it's just....don't start with AC3 or you will miss out a lot of what's going on in the story.

Sleeping Dogs(PS3,360,PC)- If you want a sim game about dogs sleeping...I'm just kidding, Sleeping Dogs is a combination of GTA,Yakuza and the Batman Arkham games which is honestly a nice combination if I say so myself.

Resident Evil 6(PS3,360)- Remember RE5? well RE6 is pretty much RE5 except it does things a lot better and a lot worse than RE5, you might have heard the amount of hate RE6 has gotten and I have to say do you always trust what people say over the internet?. If you look at the review there's 20 something above avg reviews, 20 something avg reviews and only 6 ish reviews people saying it's an awful game. I'll keep it simple if you liked RE5 and you've come to peace that RE isn't survival horror as it once was then give this game a try, which btw takes around 30 hours to complete which is very long for a RE game.

Planetside 2(PC/Steam)- As I'm writing this, Planetside 2 is 14 hours tell it unlocks on Steam. If you're a fan of massive online MP FPS then this game is for you, did I mention it's free??? go DL it now.

The Witcher 2(360 this year,PC last year)- If you don't have a PC that can run TW2 and you have a 360, buy this game. If you remotely enjoy WRPG's and you haven't played TW2 then you are missing out BIG TIME!.

Torchlight 2(PC/Steam)- If Diablo 3 didn't fix your lust for collecting gear, loot and legendary items then a game made some of the original devs of Diablo 2 in Torchlight 2 should scratch that itch for you.

Diablo 3(PC)- D3 might have started off slow although in recent months patches are continuously coming out to add life to D3, so if you want to spend endless hours of gearing up your character then D3 will fix that for you.

Mass Effect trilogy(PS3)- The Mass Effect trilogy is finally coming to the PS3 this holiday, so if you missed out on ME1 on the 360 then pick up the trilogy asap for PS3.

The WarZ(PC)- The game is in alpha/beta atm which you can actually buy the game right now, play alpha/beta tell it goes golden which you don't have to buy the game once it comes out since you already bought the game. If you're a fan of the Arma 2 mod DayZ or a fan of survival horror games then this game is for you.

Hopefully this list helps you out this holiday season on what to buy/play. I only listed games that I ether played, bought or spent a few moments with so there could be still some games out there that could satisfy your gamer lust.

I would add one to your list.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion (PC/Steam)

If you like strategy games, this is one you shouldn't miss.  Full standalone expansion to the original Sins of a Solar Empire (which won multiple strategy game of the year awards) and includes everything that made the Trinity great and expands upon it further in even more diverse ways.  If you love strategy games, Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is definitely worth consideration.  An excellent game in my opinion.

Great list!!

Wow we almost have all the same games...

Here`s my list:

Mass Effect 3

Borderlands 2

Dishonored

Assassin's Creed 3

The Witcher 2

Torchlight 2

Diablo 3

Guild Wars 2

Also all the Steam specials (I bought a lot of old games that I never played)

The only game that I think it's missing in that list (IMO) is XCom Enemy Unknown

You definitely need to try this one!

@EvilDan666 I posted the blog before the steam sale. Bought a few steam sale games that I would add to the list Like Fallen Enchantress,FTL and The Walking Dead games. Xcom EU has me interested but I'm limited to 1 game rest of 2012, which is going to be Far Cry 3.

someone my have already said this but you could try gamefly for the console games its way cheap than buying you my just have to wait a extra day or two for new games but if you buy a 60$ game you can get 3 games out at a time for 2 months about. For the pc games i would go with torchlight 2 and witcher 2 and forget warz stick to day z on arma 2 also look for arma 3 it should be out soon but that hear-say good luck man have fun

X game 2- If you liked X game 1, you'll like this one too.

Also Dishonored is nothing like Bioshock.

Ballroompirate

@DepressiveMan Yeah I guess they both don't have abilities that unlock or anything as you progress through the game.

I take it you haven't played one of them have you?

Just want to point out that if you missed ME1 on the PS3 you don't have to buy the whole trilogy, it's available asa digital download on the PSStore.

This is definitely the best way to rate games, no numbers, just reasons why someone would like it. Good list and I'm glad you only did ones you played.

@LightEffect Why thank you, I think the whole scaling system is highly flawed cause majority of people think anything under a 9 or w/e system has for a high rating, they don't bother with those games.

LightEffect
LightEffect

@Ballroompirate I have to admit I used to be that way for awhile, I wouldn't get anything below a 9 thinking everything else wasn't good enough, yet I have games rated lower that are a blast! Just depends on what you like in games.

See the reviews for each game, and decide which one you feel like playing the most.....Don't need anyone else telling you what to buy

Ballroompirate
Ballroompirate like.author.displayName 1 Like

@cryingdevil63 Reviews are pretty pointless most of the time unless your soul purpose is to see if a game has ground breaking bugs. Majority of gamers now and days look at a number to judge if a game is worthy or not and that is not what it means to be a gamer. If a game does not score a 9 or a 10 it's crap to most people, stop limiting yourselves cause there's plenty of gems out there (like Hotline Miami).

Ever since Kevin came out earlier this year saying he wanted to make games earn the 8+ score it just destroyed all my respect for professional journalism, I'm sorry but that screams a person trying to be an idealist, a bad one at that. Also given how most professional journalism is never consistent, like when a sequel that is better yet it scores lower or a game that is reviewed by a reviewer in this case Kevin who reviewed GW2 which was pretty buggy and he even played a buggy class (Necro) that had horrible bugs and pet AI and yet it got a 9?.

Buying a game should be about your gut feeling, about your opinion and not someone else's.

I just got through picking up 42 games during the black friday sale at different stores and I didnt pay more than $15 for one, most were $10 and a couple $5. While I already own most of what you listed it is a very good list. You should make a Greatest Hits list for gamers on a lower budget.

Ballroompirate

@drknessfeeds I would like to do a blog of all the holiday sales, specially the steam sales but most of them only last a few hours.

@dralutfi Ty and NP, I would list the games I just bought off of the Steam sale, but that was yesterday when I bought most of them so I'm still in the process of playing them (and some of them are from previous gens). Atm I have a seasonal job, so I have a lot of time on my hands.

Can anyone explain to me why Max Payne 3 is rated so high? I struggled with it, the overly long (can't skipem) cutscenes, the oh-so similar gunfights all the way through the game...I just can't muster any affection for it...I bought it brand new at release (months ago) and it now sits on my pile of shame, I doubt I will ever finish it and it will sit there collecting dust right next to Dues Ex.

@DAMSOG Same here. I never saw what was so good about those 2 games. Oh well I guess it's about opinion and we must've been in the lower persentage. Personaly I can see what some people would find good about it but to me both fall a tad bit short on the story element/gun play. But that's just me.

 @lingo56  @DAMSOG

I enjoyed both games, Deus Ex more than Max Pain but I also enjoy Metal Gear. Either i'm a glutton for punishment or I enjoystory based games even when they sacrifice gameplay for story segments (sometimes).

lingo56
lingo56 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@FormattedGnu Well if you've played a Call of DUty before you've played this one. Nothing amazingly different in this one so personaly if you have Blops 1 I'd stick with that so you don't have to spend money on dlc again.

Ballroompirate
Ballroompirate

@FormattedGnu As I said on the bottom of the blog I only listed games that I bought personally or tried it in a beta type format. Blops 2 is one of those games I haven't bought yet cause I have a 30+ game backlog atm. I have nothing against CoD or Halo, I might prefer a few other FPS over them but I still respect CoD/Halo for what they do/bring.

I suppose he might be worried about the back lash he would receive if he even hinted towards Black ops lol, seems you only have to mention call of duty and you will have 50 odd haters all having a cry about the game.

I'm really on the fence about Far Cry 3. The game looks gorgeous and seems to integrate an open, interesting world with an engaging story + just the right amount of RPG elements. HOWEVER, i've noticed in trailers + GS' 'Now Playing' that you can see enemies through bushes and sneak up on them right beside them without them even noticing. I'm just afraid that this'll be another 'triple A game for idiots' ie a game that holds your hand all the way through and is afraid to alienate the casual gamer with too much difficulty. If this is the case then im not sure i want it.

@s_h_a_d_o Indeed I loved Farcry last gen, when Farcry 2 came out it felt like a lot of things were missing. I was 50/50 on Farcry 3 but every time I see something related to Farcry 3 it washes away my doubt.

Forza Horizon, NFS Most Wanted, and Halo 4 are also must have games.

Good list.

Ballroompirate

@speedfreak48t5p I haven't played ether of those 3 since I have a 30+ games in my backlog. Although I have to say I have high interest in Halo 4 which you can never go wrong with a Halo game.

Two great games are missing. Guild Wars 2 and one of my top favorite game Dark Soul (PC).

@upol94  I forgot GW2, although I haven't played it since Sept 20 ish. The game is pretty amazing so I would recommend it also if you're into MMO's or thought GW1 was fun. I'd have to say it's hands down the best none sub MMO out there and easily beats the majority of sub based MMO's.
