    Bam's anime reviews: Noein

Before I start with the review, I'm probably not going to put in video versions of my reviews, again. Reason for why is because thanks to the new design of the site, I can't use the option to put uploaded videos on your posts, which kinda sucks. So, you're back for seeing text anime reviews.

Noein is a science fiction anime series directed by Kazuki Akane and Kenji Yasuda. Unlike other animes I've seen, this anime is not based off on a manga. This is totally original. This anime is unlike any anime I've seen in the modern decade of animes. It's because of it's story and great design is the main reason why this show is fun to watch.

Let's get into the story. This anime starts off fifteen years in one of the possible futures. Now I said "in one of the possible futures" for a reason, and I'll get to that later. There was a violent battle using fictional technology that took place between two "timespaces": La'cryma, a possible future of our own universe, and Shangri'la, another possible dimension fifteen years after our intent on the destruction of all space and time. The key to stopping Shargri'la's invasion is a mysterious object called the Dragon Torque. A group called the Dragon Knights is sent through space and time to find that object.

In the present, twelve-year old Haruka and her friend Yuu were planning to run away from their home's, when they meet a member of the Dragon Knights named Karasu, who is Yuu from fifteen years in the future. Karasu believes that Haruka is the Dragon Torque, but vows to protech her rather then sacrifice her for his timespace, La'cryma. Other then the Dragon Knights, Haruka is targeted by a mysterious entity named Noein and he is behind Shangri'la who is intent on bringing her into his timespace to end all universes.

That's the story of the anime. But now, I'll tell you the concept of this anime. Noein uses an conception of time as a dimension that enchances with other timespaces. Haruka's Dragon Torque, which affects this relationship, takes the shape of an Ouroboros. Noein makes use of several interpretations of quantum physics, which views the universe as branching off into an infinity of possible states of changing things that will most likely happen. It also states that an observer or measurement is important in determining the decoherency of probability. In the anime, Haruka possesses supreme observer status in the multiverse, thus allowing her to determine the sole outcome of an event just by obseving one of the possible futures of the event.

The idea of this anime's plot might be hard to understand to some of you guys. Next to the last anime I reviewed, Serial Experiments Lain, this anime has a story that you really need to pay attention to big time. I mean really. This is an anime by all means that you should not lose focus on. But the story is awesome. I think it's one of the best stories ever put in a science fiction anime or anything relate to science fiction, period.

The characters are all good. Haruka is one of the protagonists of the anime, and she is a good character. Haruka's classmate and the other protagonist of the anime, Yuu, is ok. He's not my favorite character or anything. Ai, another of Haruka's classmate and friend of hers, is an ok character. She can be angry most of the times in the show. Isami is another of Haruka's friend and he is one of my favorite characters. Him and Yuu and very close and they do get along very well. Miho is a close friend to Haruka and her friends. She is one of those nerdy characters. She believes in aliens, ghosts and things like that. And surprisingly enough, she is sometimes right in her theories of alien abduction. She is a nice girl.

Ryoko Uchida is the quantum researcher for the Magic Circle Project. She's alright. Ryoko's partner and bodyguard, Kyoji Koriyama, is good. He doesn't understand the idea of Ryoko's work, given the fact that he works for the police and police officers don't understand scientific stuff like that in real life anyway. Karasu is Yuu in the future timespace and another protagonist of the series. He is one of my favorite characters next to Isami. Atori is kind of a freaky guy, thanks to his purple eyes and dark lips. But he is good, nonetheless. And we have Tobi, who is this Dragon Knight that masters the techinical side of the future timespace. So, the characters in the anime are all ok.

The artstyle in the anime is great. The backgrounds and characters look really good. There is one case where some of the characters artstyle's will change during action scenes. For example, in episode 12 and 23, you will see the characters look black and white while they are fighting. It makes you feel like that they came out of a manga then just a colored anime. But the artstyle is good. The animation is handled well in the anime. It gets pretty choppy in the action scenes. But for the most part, the animation holds up pretty good.

The japanese voice work is good. I also heard a little bit of the english voice acting, but I didn't think it wasn't as good as the japanese voice work. There are some cases when the dialogue in the japanese dub gets a little messed up. For example in episode 4, when Karasu said to Yuu about Haruka disappearing in front of his eyes, there was one word that was written incorrectly in that sentence. He said, "Haruka will someday disappear in front of your eyes". Instead of how the word someday is spelled normally in the subtitles, it was changed to "seomday", based on how I seen the sub version of the anime. It's weird on how the staff wrote it that way. And the funny thing is, they repeat that scene in a flashback and they managed to spell the word "someday" correctly instead of how it was before. That's weird and funny at the same time. The music is really good.

Overall, Noein is a show that's not for everyone. The story might confuse some anime fans out there. But if you can handle science fiction animes that has a deeper story-telling in it, then look no further with Noein. I'm going to give this anime a 9 out of 10.
