Welcome one and all, its that time of year again when I recap all the new gaming experiences ive taken part in.For reference heres the past two years to know what your in for:2009,2010

This is mainly the biggest games I played, whether they were new this year or old titles i missed out on. So since i dont have much typing room (Thanks for nothing gamespot), I have to split this into two blogs which i dont really like to do but i guess i must. I had to leave a few omissions but I think i have the majority of everything right here. Now without further delay here we go!

break

Infamous (PS3)

infa

Like everyone else i got this game for free when PSN was ko'ed earlier this year. As a fan of action adventure games i thought it was somewhat decent, but I'm not that big on open world titles in the long run which is probably what held this title back from being truly awesome. Sure the powers and exploration were fun but their were far more headaches in this game than i care to remember. Being constantly shot while running through the city gets tiring as do the repetitious missions. But otherwise the game had a pretty good presentation with excellent comic book cut scenes and some interesting ideas. The powers were diverse but in the end all you need is the fast bolts since they can be spammed a lot. As for the story it was alright, the comic book scenes were well done but i felt like it jumped around a bit too much for my liking.

Final Score: 8

---------------------------------

Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes (PS3)

sengoku

As most of you know hack and slash warrior type games are my gaming guilty pleasure. This time around I was surprised it was a capcom title that really upped the stakes in this genre which is normally dominated by koei and the DW games. Sengoku basera adds some much needed awesome to the stale nature of these games, with dynamic aspects such as giant tigers and different military traps and a number of other stage hazards or conditions. Like other games in this genre it mainly boils down to taking over enemy territory or defeating generals. This time though the characters are pretty diverse and eclectic, each territory has tons of hazards and characteristics all its own that usually mirror the characters who inhabit it. Rivalries between characters take center stage and are usually the final conflict in an effort to conquer midevil japan, its definitely welcome since it gives the world more personality. I also read up on a lot of JP history while i was playing this game so thats a positive too.

Final Score. 7.5

------------------------------------

Dead Nation (PSN)

dead

This is another title i got for free from PSN, mainly to enjoy with my buddy. All in all id say its quite a solid online arcade game. Nothing too special here other than horde mayhem with a few upgradable weapons and elements thrown into the mix to keep things interesting, definitely worth a look see. Had fun with it overall and you cant really be too hard on something you get for free right?

Final Score: 7

-------------------------------

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS)

oot

Whats left to say about this timeless gem? Well plenty id say, and this version of it would be the most definitive version yet. With better textures, updated character models, and a few other tweaks all round out the full package that this game is. The story is timeless and it appears the mechanics and everything hold up quite well too, it even smooths out the infamous water temple this time around and also creates a fantastic new item interface which streamlines the whole process. This came very close to being my game of the year but since it was essentially the same game i decided to let another game shine this year.

Final Score: 10

------------------------------

Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 (PS3)

dwg

Third times the charm as they say and I'm inclined to agree in this case. Adding a slew of new mobile suits and a somewhat suitable online mode this was probably the game i put the most time into all year. 00 Raiser was my suit of choice and i put it to good work taking down zeon and any other faction in my path. More so than any other series in the DW linage this one has more combos and combinations than any other and upgrading said moves with new parts and gear only sweetens the deal. I wasn't really a fan of the more closed in level design but i was still given enough room to wreek havoc so its not too much of a drawback. Gone are the previous game modes such as the normal UC history mode, in their place is a new stand alone story mode that connects all the characters in one scenario. While it is ambitious in that aspect the story falls pretty flat, luckely they do have a few modes that mimick the original story mode to an extent. This is the first game i ever got a platinum trophy for, it was hard work but im glad i can finally say that i got one.

Final Score: 7

---------------------------------

Catherine (PS3)

catherine

Sometimes trying something new will reward you greatly and Catherine's strange take on relationships and puzzle based nightmares is one i surely don't regret taking a shot at. The story is very intriguing and will keep you engaged the entire time, at points i felt the game used this as a carrot on a string tactic but thats pretty much the point. The theme of the game is upward and onward, and the puzzles obviously display that, quite deviously i might say. The puzzle aspects were think on your feet kind of moments and resulted in a lot of deaths on my part but nothing that would stop anyone in their tracks (well except for one near the end). Its got a lot of nice little touches, like beer trivia, an arcade game and a number of branching scenarios and outcomes. Im glad i gave this game a shot, its strange, funny, deep and has a feeling all its own, atlus has definitely made me a fan.

Final Score: 8

-------------------------------

No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle (Wii)

no

Ive wanted to return to santa destroy for some time, and this was that year. In this games case more of the same is a good thing, more assassins to take care of, and more variety all around. Some have said they did not care for the more linear approach this game took compared to the last game, but I actually like that much better since more time can be focused on the main aspects while refining them as well (and getting around is much faster). The wacky off the wall villains and humor make this series excellent, and the 8 bit sidequest games were excellent and really captured the 8 bit era in all its glory. Suda is a very strange designer but after playing a number of this titles, i wouldnt have it any other way.

Final Score: 8

-----------------------------

Bleach: Soul Resurreccion (PS3)

b

After playing some of the better hack and slash titles this year, i was hoping to enjoy this one as well since i was hoping it would reignite my enjoyment of the bleach series. Well needless to say it didn't, DW games are shallow but this one took that to a wholeother level. The game pretty much consists of a story mode and challenge mode, both are really straight forward and both are rather lackluster in challenge and content. Each character only has about two or more combos, thats all, and for a game that mainly consists of killing hoards of creatures like that it begins to wear thin really quick. One thing i can say for it though is that it captures the look and feel of the series and design quite well.

Final Score: 5.5

---------------------------

The ICOand Shadow of the Colossus Collection (PS3)

ico

Having recently played ICO back a few years ago i thought id rather relive one of my favorite games ever, so i only played shadow of the colossus in this collection. Its held up pretty well overall and with the upgrade to HD the framerate and detail have become quite sharp. This game would have been a 10 all over again if not for sony opting to port the European version from what ive read. This version seems to have caused the slipping animations to be far more unforgiving then they were in the original release, and the invert being non invert for the camera controls was quite bothersome, other than that its a great game but id say thats the only thing holding it back from being the end all be all.

Final Score: 9

---------------------------------------

Starfox 64 3D (3DS)

fox

As another remake for the 3DS i feel this one didn't get the love it deserved, i mean come on its star fox! Compared to Ocarina of time this game got a huge overhaul, visually and nearly every other aspect. The game has all new 3D models and voicework, but it still manages to capture the magic we all felt for the original game, so id say its a success in that aspect. Other than that its the same game we all know through and through. One thing I did like was the added online play and the ability to choose an alternate previous path you might have wanted to take before the next stage, a save feature between stages would have been nice though.

Final Score: 8

Well thats it for this one guys since thats all i could fit on here, but stay tuned for part two next week where i will finish this out with the next part and my game of the year. Thanks again for reading and see you guys next time.

I'll have to check out the Sengoku Basara series. I played Samurai Warriors Chronicles on the 3DS and absolutely loved it. I then checked out Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires and really like that alot too. So, I definetely interested in looking more into these types of games. I was really looking forward to Bleach: Soul Resurection eventually (when I get a PS3 at some point) as I have recently gotten into the anime - but I'm sure I'll play it anyways and know just not to expect too much. I played Shadow of the Colossus on the PS2 and had really liked it. But when I had tried to play Ico on the PS2 I just really hadn't gotten that into and never finished it. I think Shadow of the Colossus would be great in HD, so maybe someday I play it again and give Ico another try. I also found The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D to be a great upgrade to an awesome game. And took ful advantage of the oportunity to finally play the game all the way through.

Seems like I'll have the same problem as you gohan, my blog is really long in word so far and it's not finished yet. I really couldn't get into Infamous and I dislike a bunch of games you mentioned in the blog, I'm glad OoT 3D is a great port and that you enjoyed Catherine though (can't wait to get my copy myself!)

For the sake of mankind, I better. :P Otherwise I'll use some gift cards I get from online surveys.

@soulless4now: I hope you do find it at that price sometime soon @Nintenkid49: Id say if anything the first arc of bleach is worth a look see, but i wouldnt recommend the rest. I like your sanji avatar as well, always good to see another one piece fan (were rare). @Pierst179: Yea i can understand putting it down for MK7 since its a new experience. I dont blame you for passing up starfox though, its pretty much the same game and we have definitely had our share of remakes this last year. @koolkat14: Thanks, and thats only the tip of the iceberg till part 2 of my blog. Im in the same boat though, ive got a huge backlog i still need to finish. @slimdave21: Yea i know, i played a bit of the evil path but after fully finishing the good one i wasnt up to it, but i do see the added variety of taking that path. I guess i was a bit harsh on it in retrospec, but i still gave it an above average score since it is still a really well made and good game. I do need to try the sequel though. @Nightmare-_-: I your a big fan id say give it a shot if you can find it for a good price, but for me it just didnt have enough to keep me interested.

played few games, still want to try bleach game badly :P

@Gohansepiroth - You probably know this but Infamous's story changes whether you go through the game as good or evil. As you play through making evil choices the missions are different and the story changes. Not to mention Cole's electrical powers turn blue or and red & attacks are different depending on if you play through as the "hero" or are "infamous". The evil & good playthroughs in Infamous 2 were vastly different and the evil ending of Infamous 2 is completely epic! I highly recommend the sequel.

Man, that's a lot of games you played there. I want to get the ICO collection but I still have plenty of games I've yet to finish. :P

I have yet to finish OOT 3D, but I will get to it eventually. I stopped right after I turned into adult Link because I had just purchased Mario Kart 7. I am not buying Star Fox 3D, though, I love the game, but I am not spending money on another remake!

Great Blog. When i saw the Bleach video game it made me want to get into the series, it looked fantastic. I also love your avy bro :D

@Gohansephiroth: Oh, I see. I do kind of like the Dynasty Warriors games.

Well I've seen it go to $35 but that's still over my budget so I didn't buy it then. Hopefully this spring I'll catch the $20-$25 sale.

@TAMKFan: I definitely recommend it if your a fan of DW type games, its pretty cheap brand new on amazon too. @FojMohsin: Its ok, and if your a hardcore bleach fan i guess it should please well enough. @Hanzoadam: Indeed they are @megamannt123: Yea i dont blame you, it seems to be that many here havent played a good amount of these games :P @Courtney817: Glad you enjoyed OOT too, and lol sorry to hear shadow of the colossus didnt turn out to well for you, but in your defense their were some excellent kirby games this year. @matastig: You are quite perceptive my friend, and you are absolutely correct. Your the first person to notice that is how i choose my font colors for my blogs, just a little thing i do to make it a bit more cohesive and a little more eye catching.

Gohansephiroth

@Xenogears_Rocks: Its understandable, most of the games i put in part 1 are the lesser known titles. You should try catherine though. @cyraxkilawatt: nice, i wanted to get pokemon black earlier this year but i never got around to it and i assume the next pokemon game is right around the corner for the 3DS anyway. @slimdave21: Yea infamous was a good game to check out, id like to try the second game sometime soon as well. I know what you mean too, very rarely do i play through a game twice in a row but when i do theres definitely something special there. @macrules_640: Agreed, OOT is my favorite game of all time and the fact that i still love it this much to this day and having played it and enjoyed it all over again on the 3DS only further proves that it will remain at the top for me. @soulless4now: Its definitely a great game, it sold pretty well though so i dont think it would go down in price as soon as other niche titles normally do. @stephenage: Well the PS3 is region free so importing is always an option, although its probably not cheap. @gamingqueen: Now that you mention it i guess they were, well in part one at least, check back for part 2 to see how it all turns out. @pigfish2: Thanks :D

Fair Scores. now i don't know if you chose the game's titles font color on purpose because if you did that's kinda smart, like blue for Infamous (electricity) , pink for Catherine (sex appeality) and rusty reddish for NMH2 (that matches his Jacket )and Green for Zelda (it's everything :P) or just a freaking accident played by the hands of the sexy goddess of fortune:P well either way i'm getting some weird vibes from your blog and it might be haunted so i'm outta here:P *storms out and leaves the door open*

Out of all those games you mentioned, Zelda is the only one that I played to the end, and I agree with everything you said about it! I did try Shadow of the Colossus, though. I got all the way to the top of the beast, but just when I was about to stab it in the head, my little pink circle vanished and I fell all the way to the ground! And then Kirby came out and I played that instead.

great list of games :D but i haven't played any of them  i do own the N64 version of Star Fox 64, and while it isn't revamped, it's still tons of fun to play ;)

So HD and DS collections of older games were better than 2011 games for you? That's reassuring :P I agree with it though. Sadly that's the gaming scene today.

I still haven't bought Catherine yet because it has gone below $30!

I've only played about three of those games on your list, and from what I've experienced, they'll all quite good, but the one that stands out for me right now is Ocarina Of Time, it's probably one of the most timeless games I've played, and although I haven't played the 3DS port, I heard it was quite good. I really need to get my hands on a 3DS so I can play it.

I'm glad you gave Infamous a shot! Infamous is one of those games that I just couldn't get enough of. You know you love a game when you play through it twice and still want more... Fortunately I got my fill this past summer with Infamous 2 and am happily awaiting Sucker punch's next game. Great blog, as usual. Looking forward to reading part 2.

Cool List, I got PKMN Black and White, Zelda: OoT 3DS, My New PS3 along with Ratchet and Clanck future tools of destruction and Front Misison Evovled, Zelda: Skyward sword and downloaded a bunch of titles from the eShop, and of course the 20 ambassador games that most of us got.

Sadly I haven't played any of these games except for a little ICO and Zelda. I still wanna play Catherine tho! The others I might just pass up on for now at least!
