Freaking hell man...

So today after work i went to go get God of War Ascension from JB Hi Fi, our massive DVD/CD/Game/TV and everything electronics retailer. When i got to the PS3 section i saw that it wasn't there. They had other new releases, but no GOW. I figured maybe there'd been a shipping delay or something (it's happened before). Disappointed, i decided to go look at some DVDs instead and i noticed this.

They've created an R18+ section for videogames and placed it away from the rest of the games. Freaking really? I know Adelaide does that crap with DVDs (so pornography and horror movies tend to be in the same section, on the higher shelves and hidden in their own area) but i never thought this sort of braindead poison would seep over here. I almost left before getting the game because i didn't even know they had created an R18+ section. I had no way of knowing they had GOW in stock. There was no indication that the section was there, no indication they had the game at all (they usually put up signs or posters; they have a Tomb Raider one out the front of the store). It's almost as they they were hiding the fact that there are R18+ games now. And the warning? Really? Freaking heck...

At the moment the only game there is God of War. No other R rated games have been released as far as i can tell, so it's basically a massive GOW section. Interestingly enough, i checked in at EB Games (what they call GameStop over here) and they had GOW on shelves with the rest of the games and massive GOW posters everywhere. I guess they're not afraid of offending anybody.

The game itself? I haven't properly started playing yet. I did the first ten minutes or so (just to see if it was working) and i'm going to wait until the weekend most likely (although i'll probably start tomorrow night if i've got nothing else on). From what i've seen, the combat feels a bit more physical (punches and kicks have worked their way into Kratos' abilities). I haven't touched the multi, but i'll give it a go on the weekend. If there's anybody who's getting it, hit me up on PSN. My PSN id is Katzenbalger.

Truth time? I was initially not going to get Ascension because i thought that it was an online co-op only game. Seriously. I love the GOW games, i've played through them all, but when Ascension was announced i wasn't really paying attention so i thought that the multiplayer was the actual meat of the game. I had this idea that there would be no single player campaign, only a co-op thing. I also thought it was going to be about Kratos when he was a spartan warrior, before he made the pact with Hades. It was only until a week ago when i watched a video review that i realised its a proper GOW game and that i'm an idiot.

I bought it from JB Hi Fi because they tend to have much cheaper prices compared to other retailers (usually $20 - $30 cheaper than EB Games anyway). They also have a habit of giving away special edition and pre-order bonuses when you just buy standard copies, so i lucked out. I got a bunch of DLC codes, the special packaging and (for some reason) a Kratos Sackboy statue thing, just because i guess. I get really confused with this sort of bonus thing.

Sackboy Kratos FTW! As for the 18+ games getting their own area, I've certainly never seen anything like that in the states. As for the game itself, I'll pass for now. I'm a huge fan of the series, but this just looks like more-of-the-same. Couple that with the fact that I've heard it's the worst console GoW... I'm ready for the series to end.

@ShadowofSonic Well the 18+ thing seems to be pretty damn recent here. I've noticed its turned up in some video stores now (they have an MA+ rated area for mature games at my closest video store now).

And yeah, Ascension pretty much is more of the same. Fun, but a bit weak compared to other GOW games.

Let me know what gods you can align yourself with and what abilities they give you in the multiplayer. I know that Ares, Zeus, Hades and Poseidon are selectable, and there may be more. Ares gives you a sword and fire abilities, while Zeus gives you a hammer and lightning abilities. It's basically like Infamous 2 in that you choose who you want to align yourself with and you'll gain different powers depending on that. Just let me know. Oh, and the R18+ thing is still BS.

@MrGrakk I haven't played the multi yet, but i'm guessing the powers will be similar to the singleplayer abilities. I'm 1 hour into the campaign and i've got the Ares powers (they give you a flaming ground pound and fire damage to your attacks). The whole pact thing in multiplayer sound spretty cool though.

@Katzenbalger @MrGrakk I'd say Hades would be the most tolerable god to work for. Ares is a homicidal maniac and Zeus and Posiedon are arrogant whores. Also, apparently Posiedon is a rapist. No joke.

@Katzenbalger @MrGrakk Yeah, Norse gods are less douchey. Odin sacrificed one of his eyes just to complete his endless search for knowledge. The whole idea of him building an army for a massive final battle is pretty awesome too. The only really unlikable ones are the ones you're not supposed to like, such as Loki.

@MrGrakk @Katzenbalger Apparently they're all rapists. Hades kidnapped Persephone and pretty much trapped her in the underworld, Zeus constantly transformed into animals to seduce women, Poseidon screwed around all the time. Upon doing a little reasearch i found most Greek mythological figures were horrible, petty, jealous assholes.

Still haven't played multi , but that's because the playstation network seems to be doing maintenance. In single player though, Poseidon has ice powers, zeus lightning and hades summons angry souls.

Wow a section for rated games. My country can be beyond conservative and they cut movies like no one's business, but we don't have that here. Hopefully. I'm at least glad you got your game anyway along with a whole bunch of surprise extras! I played the demo for Ascension and I actually liked it. GoW 1 and 2 felt average to me, but this I had fun with. Also, I noticed that changing the audio language to something else made the whole thing more epic. I chose Portuguese.

@mufujifi The bonus stuff is nice. Sackboy Kratos now has a place on my 'random collectible things' table. The special edition came with the soundtrack (as a download) so that's cool as well. I've played a bit more of Ascension, and i'm really liking it. The combat is great and the sense of ridiculous scale is as good as it's ever been in the series.

The different audio language is a cool edition (the game on startup asks whether you want to start with Greek) but i've noticed the subtitles are a bit off, to the point where i get the impression they were outsourced. When playing in english with the english subs on they sometimes display different things to what the characters are saying. Funniest flub was when somebody mentioned the Hecantonchires and the subtitles said '(no suggestion)'.

Seriously!? What is that!? This just might be the first I've heard of somewhere having a section just for 17+/18+ games. Either way, I don't see the point.

@danwarecritic Yeah, its downright stupid. Adelaide has te R thing in every store and rental place, and the fact that it doesn't differentiate by content is downright stupid (things like True Romance, Fight Club, Evil Dead and the filthiest porno available are all filed in the same section).

Our classification board has always had issues with complaints, since people are stupid. Our old rating system simply had letters for each rating, but apparently that wasn't enough so we upgraded to a colour coded system. Now we're up to segregation. I tell you what though, this ain't going to stop dumbass parents from buying 13 year olds R rated games.
