Once again it's that time of year when gamers of all backgrounds enjoy bashing each other over the head with their take on game of the year selections. Even with the slightest of glances past the user comment sections when voting on various categories I was welcomed with well more than a years worth of the painfully repetitive "your picks suck" / "my picks are indisputable!" / "you like__ too much" / "you don't appreciate __ enough" nonsense.

I must admit that even after all these years it still continues to amaze me how even the most seasoned gamers can sometimes fall into taking these yearly game awards a bit too seriously.. as well as forget that dispensing any significant amount of time and energy trying to force ideals and preference onto other fans of probably the most subjective of all modern entertainment mediums is rather superfluous.

Anyways, I've had more than my fill of gaming related annoyances and headaches this year.. which is why I am planning to take a bit of a break. But before that I suppose I shall grace the internet with the 2010 Old Skoolies . Happy holidays.

"your picks suck" / "my picks are indisputable!" / "You like_Halo_ too much" / "You don't appreciate _Final Fantasy XIII_ enough" There, filled in the blanks for you. xD Other than those 2, I agree with the rest. :P

Nice list. My personal opinion on most anticipated game of 2011 would definitely be R.A.G.E. It's been in development before fallout 3 and borderlands, and it has driving/action/adventure in a wasteland setting. God why couldnt fo3 have vehicles? anyway....RAGE is coming...R U Ready?

Hirasugi

Umm...your list is wrong lol just kidding The very concept of top "10 lists", "GOTY", and "best of genre" list to me are absurd. No one is going to have the same exact list as I am, because I (and hopefully everybody else) are not lemmings. The only list that matters is the one that you create, not the ones "officially backed" by popular sites or magazines. Which is why I don't watch the Oscars either, it merely is a self-congratalatory, popularity contest. If these awards are seen in this context we will finally be able to move away from these childlike tendencies. Unfortunatly this will only happen when fanboyism dies (aka. when hell freezes over)

barnold81
barnold81

In the end, award selections shouldn't matter. We weren't the ones who made the games, and we already bought the games we love. I understand the feeling about FFXIII, but I finished the game and really loved it in many respects. There's a point at the very end where the game opens up. I would agree that SquareEnix needs to reevaluate their design for FFXV. Does anyone else feel like Super Mario Galaxy 2 was overrated considering it didn't go that far in the awards from any review source? Super Mario Galaxy 1 was spectacular, and I literally couldn't stop playing it. SMG2 though - I played it through to the end, and didn't bother getting 120 stars because I was tired of SMG.

MEDzZ3RO
MEDzZ3RO

Pretty much agree in every award you've give with the only exception being that Uncharted 3 is probably the most anticipated game of 2011. God Of War 3 deserved GOTY, people who disagree didn't play it.

I like your list, if only because RDR didn't win 99% of them.

buda666
buda666

Well I agree with you in 90% and I loved God of War 3. But I dont know why do you hate Final Fantasy XIII so much. Yeah Vanile and Hope do suck but I really enjoyed the game itself. Best Ending Castlevania ? Damn now I have to beat that game lol.... And I really didnt see the point in us voiting for our favorite cause in most cases they just picked the game they like ( RDR ). You have good taste in games :P

i gotta agree with Sh30g0rath since i'm from Europe too: best game overall was Demon's Souls which i played all summer long n got platinum on 2 profiles. it's just awesome. God of War III was nice too, but hmm it stays 'simply' a hack-and-slay (although a very brilliant one), but after finishing Titan Mode and the challenges i never touched that game again. And i'm always looking forward to new game mechanics, so i'll definitely gonna check out vanquish, but i'll wait till it's cheaper 'cause i heard the story takes only about 10 hours and money's gonna be short since i'm spending a lot of it on Dead Space 2 end of this month ;) Furthermore this is a pretty complete list. You even mentioned Minerva's Den (finally!). To a great new year everyone!!

Sh30g0rath
Sh30g0rath

Great read with some good choices in there. Personally being from the UK, GoTY for me was Demon's Souls followed by Mass Effect 2, although GoW 3 is good. Also I'd have to go with NFS Hot Pursuit for racer of the year even though I am enjoying GT5 as well. Overall though pretty good.

andreperezpalha

Great list, but I would change GT5 for Forza 3, although I believe it is from 2009...

GryphonICD
GryphonICD

Good selection. This is a list I can agree with pretty much and glad to see more spotlights on some truly great games like Mass Effect 2 and Heavy Rain for their achievements in progressing gaming. I wont dispute Red Dead Redemption was a good game, but how it won some of the awards over some games that excelled in such fields was beyond me on the official awards. This I shall say is far more sensible and balanced.

Crash_WL
Crash_WL

Nice list there, and yeah, it's kind of ridiculous that Read Dead Redemption sweeped all the awards... Where's the variety, and how will promising games get improved if they are not encouraged to? Happy to see Lords of Shadow in the list as a winner, it's my personal Game of the Year! :)

Hercules321

This was a good article (can I call this an article...?). I think that what it ultimatley comes down too with a lot of these games is simply whether or not it is a good game in your opinion. With so many different game genres and each gamer having his or her own relatively unique taste in game types, it is as you said, just futile to try and tell someone else that their choice of what deserves game of the year is wrong. Example: I thought Mass Effect 2 was my favorite game of 2010. Ask a 10 year old kid with a Kinect what they think is GOTY and there is a fair chance they will say Kinectimals.

This is a very good list, I wish I was able to play Amnesia, but my computer is crap:(

keech

I agree with most of your picks. As well as the silly nature of bickering over which game is better (when most of the games have nothing in common). BUT my personal pick for best writing has to go to Alan Wake. Pick for best DLC add-on would have to be Borderlands Secret Armory. Not just for this year but possibly best DLC for any game.

MithrilFox
MithrilFox

Your list is far more sensible and reasonable than GameSpot's. They have a seriously obsessive fetish for Red Dead Redemption, naming it in over 10 awards.

icemelter07

Amnisia was one of the scariest games i have played, i did not even finish the demo. the atmosphere sucks you in and you just was to jump right, out crying in fear and terror.

"Least Welcomed Genre Introduction - Corridor RPG, Final Fantasy XIII (multi.)" Well done discrediting the entire rest of your post. Eternal Sonata, FFX and countless other RPGs that came out long before FFXIII would like a word with you.

This was a awesome list, only thing I personally would have different, is 3DS a million times over the PSP 2. But nice list you got here.

myungish

Well, any list that isn't so biased it can be seen from space is good. I agree with most of your choices especially with Amnesia. That game gave me a major case of the heebie jeebies and I actually developed fear of the dark.

COLDFIRE25
COLDFIRE25

@MiniSiets Mass Effect 2, yes. I do agree with that from what I've heard about the game. I havent made it through the first but I also dont own the game and Im looking forword to borrowing it again. Other then that there is really no other game that matches up to what Halo as done over the years, and saying "fail" to it being GOTY for Xbox360 is kind of a joke. Being the last Halo made by Bungie, and being that Bungie hasent had a great Halo game since Halo2, I'd say they did a very good job, aside from it being close to Halo3, its still better.

Master_Chef08
Master_Chef08

I agree that bickering over which video game is better is pretty pointless, but on the flip-side it is nice to see your favorite game of the year get some recognition (and a little frustrating when it doesn't).

Leinhartx
Leinhartx

@jonnybutler11 I agree, An ending will not make or break a game, But it does make or break a story. For me, I felt dissapointed when I finished Kratos's story, and I shouldn't finish a game with a disapointed feeling.

EXxile
EXxile

This is by far one of the best awards I have seen thus far. I agree with a lot of this list, and I'm glad you kept the "Best 360" and "Best PS3" lists strictly for exclusives

MiniSiets
MiniSiets

@COLDFIRE25 Yeah sure no problem. Mass Effect 2 hands down. It's a sequel that vastly improves upon the original (which was already an amazing title) and actually feels like a different game; not a rehash of the same game we've played 4 times already. I am a big fan of Halo 1 actually, but Reach is only a shell of what Halo used to be and doesn't push first person shooters forward in any significant way.

COLDFIRE25
COLDFIRE25

@MiniSiets Okay then, Halo has been around since the original xbox came out. Its still around today and is a game I go back to time to time. I've played many games on the road to where Halo has reached today, and not seen anything that can stand up to it. I love every game in the series and millions of others will agree. If you would like to tell me which game you think is the game of the year for the xbox, feel free. I've said more then once why this game should get it, I'd like to see what you can come up with.

I don't agree with you. Where is Bayonetta?

EvilDan666

People should do like you instead of hitting on other people selections... They should make their own Best of 2010!!! You can always argue wich game is better than another but in the end it's your own experience with the game that matters!! In my own opinion Red Dead Redemption is my pick for GOTY because of the time that I spent playing it and because I wanted to complete all the side missions (wich I normally don't do)

I can definitely 10000% agree that amnesia was the best horror game of 2010. If only more people could have a chance to play it!
