  Free Games That ROCK: Singleplayer

  This is the first of a (hopefully) continuing series discussing the best of the best in the world of free games. In this post, we will be looking at a few of the superior free singleplayer games.

  Are you short on cash? Maybe you need a action game for a quick fix. Or maybe you just want to try something unique. Enter the world of free and indie games, a magical place unfortunately polluted by many terrible games. How do you find the gems shining in the dark void of bad games? I'm here to help. Most of the games on this list resemble full retail games. Here are just a few of the many worthwhile free games on the net.

  

  -Echoes

  This frantic omnidirectional shooter obviously takes inspiration from Geometry Wars. One interesting feature is the inclusion of a health meter, so no cheap one-hit deaths here. The pace is breakneck and goes until your ship is destroyed or you have a seizure from the sheer insanity. Highly recommend. Download it here.

  

  -de Blob

  de Blob(Yes, the "de" is lowercase) is a crazy little game. You are de Blob! Roll around your bland, colorless city, dyeing it as you go! Strangely addictive and cute. Lack of a save feature hurts this one, but considering that an updated verision of this game is being released for the Wii and DS, you'd be smart to try this game for free. It's as strange and as fun as it sounds. Roll out!

  

  -Frets on Fire

  This game rocks out loud! It's a shameless Guitar Hero clone, but you should consider the download even if you own the popular music game. Literally HUNDREDS of user-created songs are out there, and an easy-to-use track editor means you can craft a chart for your favorite song too.

  Is this the best title for a game ever?

  I think so. I present for your entertainment...

  The Apocalyptic Game About Penguins.

  Not only does it have the best title ever, but it's suprisingly fun. It's free, so give it a shot. You have to nothing lose and penguins to gain.
