Just can't do it
Well. My first blog on Gamespot. Guess I'll see how this goes.
Let me start with this. Something I just recently learned for myself:
If you are playing Fallout: New Vegas on a console - YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!
So - anyway. Yeah. I can't do it anymore. I can't go back to playing either of the Fallout games on my Xbox 360. And yes, I've spent a fair bit of money on them. Preordered the Fallout 3 Collectors Edition (with the lunchbox), also bought the GOTY for the DLC for $40. So ($100 right there). Also preorderd New Vegas. (I think $56.99 on Amazon?). So anyway, I've invested a fair amount of $$$ in the franchise and I do feel that I did get my money's worth out of Fallout 3. Completed everything but Point Lookout (just haven't got around to it yet) and have well over 200 hours into the 360 version. New Vegas... I quit because I experienced what seemed to be longer and longer load times which really began to annoy me considering how often you see a load screen in-game. Finally I broke down and was able to pick up the PC version for $13.99 (Black Friday deal plus some Amazon credit.) Figured it was worth a shot since it was reviewed as less buggy.
And I will never look back. I bought the Fallout 3 GOTY last year during Steam's X-mas sale for $24.99. Played it a little, loved the graphic improvement over the 360 but as I was already achievement hunting on the 360, I neglected it. Then, once I got Fallout New Vegas for the PC, I jumped right in, willing to replay the mere 65 or so hours I had already put into the 360 version. I do love the game after all.
Anyway - then it happened. As much as I dig New Vegas, the one thing that I really dislike about it are the clothes and armors. They just kinda suck and look pretty lame. So ....I tried a mod that would get me some new duds. Mind you, I know ZERO about installing mods but after some research (FOMM makes things easier) and trial and error, I got it to work. Since that worked out ok I tried another mod. And then another. And then that was that. Hooked.
So what started as me simply looking for some better looking gear has resulted in things like a player home in Goodsprings, Sunny Smiles becoming a companion (which is fine because I have enabled unlimted companions). I've changed/improved the lighting and skies via the wonderful Fellout, got a locker full of camo AK-47s, added a multitude of songs to the radio (essential in my book) and even added a new series of great quests with New Vegas Bounties. And every one of these things has had the same effect: It has made the game better and more fun to play.
For example, here's my character below, geared up sweet with Veronica (thank god I could finally remove that horrid hood!) and Sunny Smiles, chillin in my Goodsprings player home. Not shown is ED-E, who has had his enemy alert music modded away in favor of exclaiming "Danger Will Robinson!" instead. Sunny's dog, Cheyenne, I booted from the crew because it's pathfinding kinda sucked. Just added Cass as well, though I don't have screenshot yet.
.

So with all this underway I decided to revisit Fallout 3 on PC in a modding way. Created a new character, Murdering Meg who is a pure mod. Her face, hair, weapon and clothes, for starters -all mods or the result of mods. Lovely Fellout sky too. I won't bore anyone with all the mods I've installed for Fallout 3 but there are some really great ones.
.

So I guess my point is that there is no going back. Sure I'm LTTP, but I don't care. I'm just glad to have arrived. There is just too much awesome to be had with mods for the Fallout series. I always used to roll my eyes at the people who would recommend the PC version of a game simply "because of mods" but now...I guess I'm one of them. Customizing your experience can make the games better and I have found improves immersion drastically.
And to the modders...whoever you wonderful, sharing people are out there...Thanks for making my games better!
