Touching on a Touchy Topic
Yes yes, this is nothing new. I'm one of what must be millions upon millions by now touching on this subject, but I just wanted to provide my angle. Ahem.
System wars. I'm sure most of you who are pre-next gen gamers (that's pre 360, PS3, and Wii for those who are unsure of the term) remember a time when none of us fought. I had a Super Nintendo, you had a Sega, but we just played like there was no tomorrow. I didn't resent you when I had a Nintendo 64 and you had a PlayStation and I was angry that my version of Warzone had MIDIs whereas yours had actual theme songs for the wrestlers. We still got along.
When the PS2 came out, it was the top dog. It was what everyone used, and everyone was fine with that. Even after the debut of the extremely popular XBOX, the PS2's library kept it on top and even to this day it remains strong. Games are still being made for it. Unfortunately, with this next gen came the graphics wars. The XBOX 360 had a year jump on the PS3 and Wii, and thanks to that, has a larger library. Combine that with the poor quality of most PS3 ports, and PlayStation has become the underdog this time around.
My question is.. so what? I own all three current gen consoles, and I love them all dearly for what they provide to me. I don't purposefully get on message boards and waste my time and my precious life complaining to owners of other systems. So what the 360 had a Red Ring of Death phase? It's still a rock solid system that provides great games, just as the PS3 does, as does the Wii. Who cares if cames don't look good? I don't know about you guys but half the time I spend on my PS3 is spent playing PS2 games that I still want to finish. And..?
We need to seriously learn to get along as gamers, as brothers and sisters, as humans, and the gaming world is becoming another front to just battle on. It's really a shame. A community that used to be all about bonding has turned into an evil mess. Countless hours I spent making mods and having fun with guys back when Half-Life debuted. Those days are quickly vanishing as gaming companies are buying each other out, producing poor quality games, and unintentionally giving us more to fight about.
The world won't last forever, and I don't know about those of you reading this, but I will not dwindle the rest of my short years on this planet away arguing about which version of Fallout 3 looks better.
