My Friends

26Jan 13

So the other day I was looking around at Disgaea stuff on the internet, and then I learned about this:

"Disgaea Dimensions 2"

At first I wasn't sure what it was. I figured it must be another spin-off game, like Disgaea Infinite and the Prinny PSP games. But then I decided to look into it...

And it turns out the game is another main series title, and a direct sequel to Disgaea: Hour of Darkness!

So this will be the first Disgaea game, since the PS2 original, to star Laharl, Etna and Flonne - just like old times. It's hard to believe that it's been 10 years already!

The graphics of the Disgaea games have really gotten a lot better since the 4th one. And these shrunken images don't do it much justice - go ahead and right-click on the images and select 'view image', to look at them in their original size to get a better idea of just how much nicer the graphics are.

I'm still not sure how much has changed in this game. I've noticed quite a few differences between 1 and 3, so I'm not sure if this game will be more like the original, 4, or something different altogether. Of course, we know about what to expect as far as gameplay. But I'm not so sure that there haven't been some changes... For one thing, I'm thinking that there may no longer be a movement grid. Maybe the games are adopting the movement area circle that appeared in Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom? Bah, I won't speculate. But something does seem.... different. Good different.

Dimensions 2 will also introduce a new major character into the series, Laharl's little sister Sicily! (Pictured with Flonne)

It looks like Sicily might be taking over as the healer of the main cast, since Flonne has been shown using more offensive magic in the promo images. As far as what her story and personality are like, I guess we'll have to wait for information to come out when US release info surfaces.

And, in an unexpected twist, the game will feature an alternate female version of Laharl! It's still unclear whether Laharl gets transformed into a chick during the main story, or if it's some sort of post-game story like Etna Mode and Axel Mode. Either way, could be funny, even if it's kind of weird. Oo But Nippon Ichi usually manages to deliver with strange plots like this out of the blue.

So, the game is going to come out in Japan at some point, if it hasn't already, and then I predict we'll hear about localization sometime after that. Of course it's going to be on the PS3, but I'm still hopeful that NI considers making it a available for the Vita as well. But then, hopefully they port Disgaea 4 in the meantime!

Shaping up nice, hope the game keeps things fresh and does right by the original!

I struggled to get into the Disgaea titles although I can see their appeal. Those cutesy graphics disguise some pretty fierce turn based strategy.

love disgaea especially 2 and 4. I have 600 hours on 4 and I'm re-playing 2. :P looking forward to this

@2ndWonder While that's certainly some insane per-dollar value, that kind of run-time is the exact thing that keeps me from ever wanting to play this series. No matter how interesting the mechanics and overall vibe seem, that's a pretty prohibitive amount of time investment in my eyes. Are there any games in the series (besides the platformer spin-offs) that are shorter?

@WTA2k5 @2ndWonder You can really give as much or as little time as you want to playing a Disgaea game.  If you're just looking to complete the main story, you could probably do so without getting too overly invested in everything else.

But there is a lot of optional content that you can unlock in the game, like new areas and new units, and a superboss named Baal who appears in every game.  You will probably want to explore all of that stuff once you get into the game anyway.

I don't see how you can see an overabundance of content as a bad thing.  I mean, you can choose to play this game a lot, or else play a dozen brief games over the next year for the same amount of playtime.

I also get that after playing Disgaea for a few weeks or months in a row, you will probably want to go and do something else, or play something else.  If you're worried that you're going to forget where you left off with things in this game, I haven't really had much of a problem with that myself.  Disgaea does have a story, but it's usually fun and lighthearted, and there is more of a focus on the sandbox-style RPG gameplay.

this appears to be an improvement over Disgaea 3:Absence of Justice that I was one of my first games on the PS3 - I liked the story of 3 but it did depart from the series in many other ways.

@iowastate I like the things 3 did differently than 1.  It's just nice to see a refreshing take on things, rather than having it play out exactly like the mechanics in the first game did.  I like it when a game does that, because then you don't get the feeling that it makes the original game obsolete, or inferior in any way despite all of the new features and changes.

The story is pretty good, and I have grown to like all of the characters in 3.  But the story was a little confusing at first, with all of the delinquent and honor student stuff.  Mao, Almaz, Beryll and the others are all pretty cool, but I still think it's difficult for the series to top the great ensemble cast of the original game, and its story.

It's really cool that NI takes those memorable characters, and ones from their other games, and makes them unlockable in each new game.  So then if you have some favorites, it's like a treat at the end of the game because you can add them to your party.  But this being the first time that NI is going back to their original story and continuing it, those are some big shoes to fill, and I hope they can recapture the zany magic that the original had.
