BLAST from the PAST: Top 10 SEGA babes! (1/2)

As we continue to wait for the end of the month I though I do something to set up the mood. So I decided to pick off the best beauties to ever grace the SEGA gaming scene.

I know there's probably nothing more geeky than going over video game "babes". but lets all indulge ourselves and have some fun here.

So after a careful selection I present you the best of the best SEGA beauties!

    10.

    Janet Marshallジャネット・マーシャル

From Virtua Cop 2 Janet is an expert in subject profiling and crime scene analysis. She joined the Virtua Cop Police Department "VCPD" to avenge the death of her partner.

Janet enjoys walks in the beach and putting criminals behind bars. She's one dedicated police officer who won't rest until the law is uphold. She's is our SEGA babe no.10.

    9.

    Alisa「アリサ」

The main Protagonist from Phantasy Star. While she wasn't the first main female protagonist for SEGA (that was Orincess Kuromi from SEGA Ninja) She was regardless their first noteworthy main female character. She also holds a special place in video gaming history for being the first-ever female protagonist to lead a Role Playing Game.

    Alisa in SEGAGAGA

Alisa was absent from the video gaming screens for a long time. But fortunately she makes a great come back as an important character in the Dreamcast game SEGAGAGA where she changes her role from a fantasy heroine to a moe~moe secretary. Apparently many SEGA characters have to work inside the company doing common labour due to lack of opportunities in the video gaming world. In the game the main character notices that Alisa wasn't moving her lips at first while speaking when she was introducing herself. Alisa then tells him that she had to learn ventroliquism to save on animation costs because they were very expensive at the time.

    8.

    Neiネイ

The legendary character from Phantasy Star II: The End of the Lost Age. Nei was the result of a genetic experiment that fused the cells of a bio monster with those of a human to give birth to a baby of an entire new race later called "NUman". In Phantasy Star II gamers worldwide where shocked by her plot twist event since it was something unprecedented at that point in gaming history.

In 2005 SEGA decided to remake Phantasy Star II for their SEGA AGES line of games in Japan. For this remake the entire 80's-like anime artwork cla$$ical of the Phantasy Star series (save III) was totally redone and was given a totally different artistic $tyle. I am not very fond of the new artwork myself, but I'll let you decide for yourselves.

Nei to this day remains one of the most beloved SEGA game characters by both the company and fans alike.

    7.

    Ulala「うらら」

The skimpy dressed ace reported from Space Channel 5. When she was little Ulala was saved from a terrible accident by a reporter from Space Channel 5. Ever since that day she vowed to work at Space Channel 5 and become the best reporter the galaxy has ever seen.

Ulala is one hip space cat. With the aid of her double "chu beams" she is dead-set on making the galaxy a funky and stylish place.

    6.

    Ramayaラマーヤ

The exotic enchantress from Arabian Fight. Ramaya was part of Princess Lurana's royal guard when her ship was attacked by the evil and corrupt Sheikh Sazabiss. During the fight, the enemy managed to abduct the Princess. Feeling responsible for the princess' abduction, Ramaya won't rest until she rescues Princess Lurana and puts an end to Sheikh Sazabiss evil schemes once and for all.

Ramaya is very proficent at using magic and uses her exotic dancing skills as a form of martial arts to fight the enemy. She's the kind of girl anyone would wish to get beaten up by.

    5.

    Blazeブレイズ

The ex-cop gone vigilante gone private detective from the Bare Knuckle series. Condecorated police officer Blaze Fielding couldn't stand idle as a powerful criminal organization was on the verge of seizing total control of her city. Blaze realized that continuing to play by the rules was futile as her superiors had all been corrupted or intimidated by the powerful crime syndicate. She then decided to quit the force alongside her partners Axel and Adam and take on the crime-filled streets their own way, armed with nothing else than their bare knuckles.

Although a very beautiful woman. Blaze is a judo expert and a highly trained police officer, thus making her a ladyy not to be messed with. Blaze's favourite hobbies are dancing, reading romantic novels and beating up street punks. This blazing hot lady is our SEGA babe no.5.

    SEGA Mega Anniversary coming up

Big celebration days coming up in these next couple of months for the SEGA faithful.

First the Mega Driveメガドライブarguably the best 16-bit system of all time will be having it's glorious 20th release anniversary at the end of the month. and it will be followed next month by the Dreamcastドリームキャストfirst 10th anniversary.

The Saturn 15th anniversary unfortunately will not come until next year.

For those who don't know. The Mega Drive became available to the public for the first time in Japan in October 29, 1988. With an original retail price of 21,000. (nowadays €144 or US $199 with current exchange rates)

The launch game line-up consisted of Space Harrier II, Jyuouki "Altered Beast", Super Thunder Blade and Osomatsu-kun: Hachamecha Gekijou.

The Mega Drive was a revolutionary console that bought console video gaming to a whole new level. It was also the worldwide most popular and most successful SEGA video game console of all-time

The Dreamcast in turn became available for purchase for the first time in Japan in November 27, 1998. with an original retail price of 29,800. (nowadays €205 or US $282) Although the price tag was cut as soon as in a couple of months into next year to 19,900. Mainly due to overall poor sales performance.

The Dreamcast game launch line-up was: Virtua Fighter 3tb, Godzilla Generations, Pen Pen Tricelon and July.

The Dreamcast was unfortunately an ill-fated and *somewhat* short-lived console. It lost much of the Japanese third party support that SEGA struggled so much to gain with the Saturn (The Mega Drive was eclipsed in Japan) and which led to a very poor Japanese performance. It was also lacking in some key popular Japanese gaming genres that the Saturn slowly pushed forward into SEGA consoles such as RPGs. In turn the Dreamcast was widely supported by western developers but at the same time lacked the support of key western companies in the video game industry such as Electronic Arts whose sphere of influece can greatly affect a console mainstream popularity in the west.

The Dreamcast commercial failure eventually led to the definitive exit of the company from the home video game hardware market on 2001.

In spite of this the Dreamcast however is one of the most praised consoles by the internet gaming community worldwide.

I will most likely be doing special blog entires as the big days start getting close. Until then keep the SEGA Love going strong as always!

    SEE YOU NEXT GAME!

BLAST from the PAST: The Best of SEGA Game Music (3/3)

    Radio DC 1999 [1 CD - 15 Tracks]

Radio DC has to be my favourite SEGA game music CD and one of my all.time favourite video game music soundtracks. I just love this album. It's just one of the few CD's I just never get tired of listening to.

The CD is presented itself as a radio show with some amusing intermissions between the music. The track selection is simply excellent, they couldn't have picked them any better. And just to keep things simple, every single track featured in this CD is the definitive arranged version of that particular musical piece.

The tracks included in this CD are:

"We Are Burning Rangers" [Reprise & Deeply Sound Mix] My favourite song from Burning Rangers and this is an excellent arranged mix of it. The song now sounds less upbeat and more R&B $tyle. Definitely my favourite version of it.

Sonic - You Can Do Anything ~Remix from Little Planet~ (Sonic CD) All the compilation CDs I've heard that have this song seem to have ripped it off straight from the Mega-CD game disc. It was about time someone did an extended arranged version, and they did a good job with it.

Do De Do Da (Ristar the Shooting Star) If you've played Ristar on the Mega Drive maybe you remember that one tune with the scratchy sounding voice chorus. Well it has been totally revamped for this album with full vocals and everything. And it sounds as Sonic Team-ish as you could've expect it.

After the Adventure (Sonc Adventure + NiGHTS) Undoubtedly the most surprising track of this CD. If the other tracks weren't as fantastic, this CD would still be worth getting only for this track. This is a wonderful mix of music from Sonic Adventure and NiGHTS in a very cool suave sounding musical piece complemented with the terrific sound of the accoustic guitar. Pure cla$$.

Switch Again (Switch!/Panic!) Very wacky Japanese-centric song, just like the game. Great version.

Sona mi Areru ec Sancitu (AZEL: Panzer Dragoon RPG) I've always liked this song but it was one of those songs you have to be in a certain mood to really enjoy listening to it. This new arranged version makes it more easy on the hears for your listening pleasure.

A Lullaby (Clockwork Knight) Besides the new female singer, this version isn't really that different from the original. Still, it's one of the best SEGA songs.

Theme from Phantasy Star III. The amazing theme from Phantasy Star III adapted to cool Jazz. Whoa, I still can't believe what they did with this track, but it's just outsanding. By far the best version of this theme. This and After the Adventure are the definitive tracks of this album.

Radio DC is simply a must have CD for SEGA game music fans.

    SEGA Piano Nocturne 2005 [1 CD - 16 Tracks]

Another personal favourite of mine. A selection of SEGA music performed in a solo piano nocturne $tyle.

Shenfa (Shenmue) Future ~Voyage~ (Sakura Wars 3) Can Still See The Light (Phantasy Star Online) Passing Breeze (OutRun) Main Theme (Space Harrier) I just Smile (Burning Rangers) System Down (S.D.I.) and Dreams Dreams (NiGHTS)

SEGA Piano Nocturne this is a very cool and smooth sounding album that is worth owning alone for the amazing solo piano versions of Shenfa, the Space Harrier Main Theme and Dreams Dreams. As it's custmary of Wave Master , the original music versions of the tracks also included in this CD, which raises it's value. Although it still lets you left wanting for a couple of more tracks. Overall, very recommended CD.

    Club SEGA 1997 [1 CD - 10 Tracks]

For those who enjoy Trace/Rave Club music this CD is a very good choice. In all honestly this isn't really my kind of music, but the track selection is very good. Fans of this type of music will certainly find this CD enjoyable.

The games featured in this CD are: SEGA Rally Championship, Virtua Fighter, Top Skater, Daytona USA, Last Bronx, Virtual-ON, NiGHTS, Sonic 3, The House of the Dead and After Burner.

    Club SEGA 2 ~Beat Grooves~ 1999 [1 CD 11 Tracks]

More Club music for your enjoyment. Although the track selection isn't as good as in the first volume. The games featured in this CD are: Spike Out, Sonic R, Burning Rangers, Water Ski, NiGTHS, AZEL: Panzer Dragoon RPG and Le Mans 24.

    SEE YOU NEXT GAME!
