The idea of a Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire remake seems to be quite a polarizing one. In a world where apparently nobody's allowed to just be neutral to the idea, which side do you stand on? Are you pro R/S/E remake or anti R/S/E remake? For those of you who have cheated by reading the blog title, my stance on the issue is clear: Why would any Pokémon fan not want a remake?

Typically remakes take the original game, improve the graphics, add in some new areas/content, and maybe remix the soundtrack. And while that may be the only real justification a remake needs, Pokémon games dont just get remade --they get updated as well. A 3DS remake for Ruby and Sapphire would have all the standard fare and more. In glorious 3D!

A lot has changed for the series since the sepia-toned days of 2003. For starters, all of the new Pokémon introduced in generations four and five (possibly six?) would be available. Heart Gold and Soul Silver nailed the formula by allowing players to obtain these recent additions at any time through trade. Taking your favorite Sinnoh Pokémon on a campaign through Johto is a very real possibility, and the same idea could easily be applied to our remake in question.

Another big addition to the series in recent years is online play. The ability to battle and trade online played a big part in reigniting my love for Pokémon and its inclusion in any Hoenn romp would be welcome to say the least. I'd be remiss to mention internet play without mentioning competitive play, which is looking a lot better since generation three, and with Black and White's Rotation and Triple battles as part of the package, players wont be hard pressed to find a battle type that's right for them.

We're still at the tip of the iceberg here. There have been plenty of other important updates to the formula since the original Ruby and Sapphire, including but not limited to the fourth generation physical/special split as well as Black and White's implementation of seasons. While they're at it, they could fix some of the original's problems, such as their baffling decision not to implement the day/night cycle.

Maybe its just me, but I love the idea of taking my Sandile down a moonlit Hoenn road and having a rotation battle in the snow. And of course, Gamefreak can always add entirely new ideas to the game as well.

"B-but, Pixel!" you say. "I can already GET the Hoenn Pokémon in the games I already have! IN YOUR FACE!" Alright, calm down. If the only reason you play Pokémon is to complete your Pokedex, then you don't have to buy it.

"Is that a joke?!" you enquire. "I'd even be able to send Pokémon from the original games into the remakes! Ridiculous!" Am I the only one who thinks that's awesome?

"O-oh yeah?!" You blurt out. "Well there are, like, way too many Pokémon games already and stuff! Give it a rest, Gamefreak!" Eh, the remakes give Gamefreak more time to work on the next gen, not to mention balance the competitive aspects mid gen by giving the Pokémon new moves. At least its not quite an annual thing like Call of Duty, and again, nobody's forcing you to buy anything.

Now that that's out of the way, on to the big question: Do I think it'll happen? Well, all I can really go on is Gamefreak's history, and from that I can conclude that it's likely. The remake will be relatively easy money for Gamefreak, and theres really no reason why they shouldn't make them. Theres clearly some fan demand as well. On the other hand, nobody saw a direct sequel to Black and White coming, so perhaps Gamefreak is trying to break away from business as usual. Who knows?

At any rate, I think it should happen just so we can stop arguing about it.

So, are you for or against an R/S/E remake? Do you think it'll happen? Anything in particular you'd like to see happen with it?

Discuss!

I actually do not think X and Y is too early, B/W 2 seemed really rushed with most of the same people so I doubt much time went into it.  And js I hated R/S, worst gen to me.

totally agree. I want a remake and I just feel like there is a plenty to do with 5 generations pokemons. Could squeeze them in 2-3 games. Generation 6 is way too early.

I wouldn't mind R/S/E remake. I personally didn't like the III generation, but it was still a good enough game to pick up and play to the end.

I feel the reason why they remade Red/Green and Gold/Silver was because they couldn't communicate with R/S/E anymore. R/S/E was on the Advance, which couldn't trade with Game Boy and Game Boy color. With now, all games can be traded with each other in one way or another, at least if you have DS lite with the Game Boy Advance slot.

If they remake it, it would probably be in a few years when DS lite has finally died down and hard to find. Probably around 2014 or 2015, using the V generation engine.

Better than a R/S/E remake, I would like a sequel for that generation, just like B2/W2, and that would be awesome! It would bring that nostalgic feel to it but would still have that fresh exciting thrill of a new Pokémon plot!

And I don't really understand why some people dislike that Gen. so much... I mean, it brought so many new features, new ways of playing and improved graphics, as well some badass Pokémon... Well sure, some are weird-looking but every Gen. has that!! Look at the all-time favorite region, Kanto: 6 eggs and you have a Pokémon -.-' Grab three Digglet and 3 Magnemite and you'll have 2 "brand-new" Pokémon... That, to me, is not really original as well... (and I'm only mentioning the aesthetics of the Pokémon, not their stats obviously!). Sometimes I feel like old fans are just too stuck to the originals that can't appreciate new things (not being able to transfer their ultimate Pokémon was a turn down, sure but it was a fresh start) so they pick on every little thing just to decry new generations.

I know I got a little off-topic but I think it's obvious I wasn't only mentioning the RSE remake ^^'

Anyway, thanks for the post, I obviously agree with it! =D

@Pixel-Perfect  -- I'm actually not interested in them remaking Ruby and Sapphire because it was my least favorite in the series for a few reasons. However, I'm not opposed to them actually putting it out because I know a lot of people would pee their pants in excitement over it. I just wouldn't make the purchase.

@darksongbird Ruby and Sapphire are actually my least favorite games in the series as well, but that's not to say they don't have a lot going for them. I'm obviously more than okay with giving them another go, at any rate.

@Pixel-Perfect I don't disagree actually. Ruby for me wasn't a horrible game. It was just good. I thought the graphics were pretty nice and I loved how colorful the game was compared to Gold and Silver. But the biggest downfall for me was that a lot of the Pokemon were strange-looking/unattractive. More so than should have been actually. It was really off-putting. With that said though I still got pretty far into the game.

@Pixel-Perfect I'm with you. There were a lot of cool Pokemon in that gen really. But it's the gen that I probably found the most unattractive ones in too. It *was* very hit and miss. But I do remember having a decent time with the game in the past. It just wore off eventually.

@darksongbird Gotta agree again, R/S/E was pretty hit and miss as far as the designs were concerned too. I LOVE a lot of the Pokemon like Blaziken, Altaria, Zigzagoon, and Slaking but for each one I love there's a Swampert, Pelipper, Minun and Gulpin to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I'm happy to see another fan for it. The Hoenn region has the most potential to dazzle in 3D. The fact that the P/S split came after only hurts the originals, but a remake as you said could easily fix that. I also think Nintendo could integrate StreetPass cleverly if they bring back Secret Bases. That would be awesome. I just hope they don't use BW's overcompensating EXP system.

Gen 3 had the best Pokemon designs overall in my opinion, so I'm all or it!

I'm not really opposed to it, but more than anything, I just want a complete overhaul of the series. As much as I enjoyed playing through Black & White 2 recently, I feel it's time that the series changes. Maybe when it comes to the 3DS we will see visuals along the lines of XD Gales of Darkness and much faster and improved gameplay, along with new and revolutionary gameplay mechanics. I really don't care much for the smaller changes like the jump from Diamond to Black and White, but I am content enough with the games as they are. The series just has so much potential and I can't help but wish for lots of different things in new Pokemon games that never end up making it in. :P

@Chuubby They won't make any real innovation, as they can makes the same games with ice-cream pokemons and people are still going to buy it cause its pokemon.

I kinda quit pokemon, after the dissipointment of GEN V. I didn't like it too much, and I thought it was still rehashed, and Pokemon is the thing that comes out yearly if you keep track of it, so in a way, Nintendo treats it like  a cash cow, and I don't like it. If RSE was to be remade, then it has to have a ton of hours of extensive content like DLC. For some reason I don't like the remake idea, not one bit of it since I noticed Nintendo most of the time only remake games and most of it is never original anymore. I am against it since I do not like the constant  remake along with a new game with a generation. I noticed that every gen after it comes with a remake. So...RSE, and then FR/LG, gen 4 D/P/P and then HS and SS, and now B/W so I wouldn't be surprised a 3ds pokemon remake would be out and it's a gen V...all in all, I want the originals to be originals and not to be remade... if anything I want a  Yellow remake or a Stadium remake

hellz yes we want a remake of the best gen ever. I can't even stand to play gen in its current stat knowing half the pokemon like gyrados will suck because all water type moves are special attacks.

Not knowing a single thing about you, I thought you might make a blog post out of the query in the forums. It just seemed like the logical thing to do. If they can implement all these things you mentioned, as well as a quicker surf, I'd grab an RSE remake. I skipped Gen III entirely anyway so it'd be a new experience for me.For the record, I do wish GameFreak would try something new every now and then. Drill Dozer was a pretty good game, but that was seven years ago. I know Pokemon's their bread and butter, but I imagine they've got enough food to try something bold on occasion.

@homegirl2180 They should make a Pulseman sequel. n_n They'd have to buy the rights from Sega though.

Bravo.I think there's a good chance of it happening. If people keep complaining about us fans wanting it, then there must be some large amount of demand, right? :P
