Fighting is Magic has been canceled....
The Mane6 development team got hit with a cease and desist letter a few days ago...

Sad_Luna.gif

Which is a shame. I was really looking forward to getting a chance to play it. I just keep asking myself "why". There is SO MUCH fan made content out there, so why now should Hasbro come from on high and say "no".

Laura Faust mentioned on her twitter feed that she was interested in helping out with new characters not of an MLP verse, but I don't know... Those guys worked so hard.... Anyway, just feeling kind of sad right now. It's rough knowing that out there, there is a small development team that just got slapped in the face for doing something magical.

It's not right, it's not fair....

It did look pretty interesting. Though, i thought the whole idea of the show was to show how "friendship is magic" --- not how ass kicking is kick ass :-p

It's a real shame, especially so late in the development.

It's a pity hasbro couldn't make a deal and put adverts or something on it at least.

I wonder if maybe they could switch gears and make an Adventure Time fighting game instead. Cartoon Network seems pretty cool about that kind of stuff.

I made a blog post about MLP and the cease & desist in general: http://www.gamespot.com/users/King9999/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-26005882

Long story short, it's a company's right to shut down something that infringes on their IP, but before doing that, they should check if there's an opportunity for growth/increased awareness/eventual dollars, and maybe work with the responsible parties in some way to leverage interest a product generates.

@ps2fatboy Even if your not into the MLP thing, you have to admit that it's sad to see something that people worked for and cared for with no other incentive than a passion to make a great game, was killed in the interested of the all mighty dollar.

Well that is a bit of a shame

A sad, sad day for Girl Power, the developers and Pony fans everywhere, if not the entire gaming community.

King9999 has some pertinent thoughts on this matter that I'd certainly direct others to check out.

I'm not joking when I say this is an opportunity lost.

Companies seem to really like to shut down projects long after they have been announced or when they are nearing completion.

@Legolas_Katarn Right, it's not like it wasn't well on the radar of Hasbro.

That completely sucks for those that put in the work on it. It was a non-profit game, so I don't see what the issue would have been with them releasing it.

I never really watched and got into the MLP series. Still, this Fighting is Magic game sounds interesting, shame it got cancelled.

"It's not right, it's not fair....  "

Well, actually it is.

It matters not that Mane6 might have produced something of inestimable value to fans, the fact is that they had transgressed upon the intellectual property of another, and in that regard such an outcome was (or at least should have been) entirely expected - if those on the team were not fully cognisant of the implications, and that all their hard work might amount to nothing, then that is a result of their own self-delusion.

I will allow that Hasbro is being rather totalitarian and unforgiving in their handling of the affair, especially given the non-profit status of the project, and that ultimately they do themselves and the [official] franchise a disservice - they (Hasbro) would have been better advised to reach out and embrace such a concept - I suspect the real reason for the stance taken, is that upper-management have their own plans for a similar project (or they do now, after seeing the results so far and the support engendered by Mane6), and that this threatens their own [money-making] interests in that regard.

@s_h_a_d_o We've conversed about this elsewhere, but I'd suggest Hasbro had way more to gain by this than lose:  See Guitar Hero and American Idol as the precedents.

And if I were an executive at Hello Kitty Inc., You bet your bippy I'd be making a phone call to mane6 right quick.

Really sucks for those guys who worked so hard on it. It was to be expected though and the way MLP has been garbage in season 3 (with the exception of "Magic Duel") plus the alicorn thing, I'm not sure how much longer bronies will care about the show.

Who knows? Maybe the devs will leak it online like the devs of Chrono Trigger : Crimson Echoes did. C&D letters be damned.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Hasbro could use a lesson from Capcom on how to treat their fans!

what is the harm with these free fan created games?

almost every popular series has them and some are quite good.  All they are is free PR for fans to play with when they can't watch it on the TV I don't really see the problem.

Another high-profile, fan-created opportunity for free publicity vanquished. Nice one, Hasbro. Kudos for Lauren trying to keep this endeavor afloat though. She apparently really cares about the fans of MLP.

I'm not a MLP fan, I actually very much dislike it, however, that looked like  really solid fighting game, and I was really looking forward to playing it.

Synthia

@starduke Well it seems like an option might be Lara Faust making new characters for them to use. They get to keep all the code after all. They just can't associate anything related to MLP.
