    The Gamespot Review Controversy

Recently there have been many people slamming Gamespot for bad reviews. First of all, reviews are an opinion. The scores will vary from person to person. Example, Call of Duty 4 is recognized as one of the best games around right now, but say the reviewer was 1 in 100 people that didn't like it. It just depends on the reviewer.

The main games surrounding this mess are Too Human and Mercenaries 2. The most recent Mercs 2, was given a 5.0(mediocre) by Gamespot and a 7.9(good) by IGN. I'd say there is a pretty big difference between a 5.0 and a 7.9 so obviously each reviewer had a different opinion. Many comments on this review make me mad because the reviewer is entitled to his opinion and he should not be brought down for it. I think many people forget this is a free website. Sure you can subscribe to get some advantages but most of us are getting this for free. I say a comment that said "who cares what this guy thinks"(referring to the reviewer). What does he mean by that, everyone watching or reading the review wants to know what he thinks, after all the what reviews are for. If no one cared about what the review thought, we would go ahead and buy the game given a bad score just to realize it does suck. There goes 60 bucks. Don't get me wrong though, I would not trust every review because, guess why, different opinions!

The game that started this argument was Too Human. Gamespot score 5.5(mediocre) and IGN score 7.8(good). As a scrolled of the comments one caught my eye. The member said "rent it before you buy it". This is very true. Lets say you really wanted Too Human and upon the Gamespot review you decide not to get it. This is wrong too, at least play the demo or rent the game.

The other reason I feel Gamespot has raised the standards of reviewing is because they really want you to notice a good games. If they gave every game 7.0s or 8.0s you would not be able to tell which games are really outstanding. For this reason I thank Gamespot, that they have the courage to gave a plain game a mediocre rating and show us what is worth buying and what is worth leaving on the shelf. But in the end all comes down to opinion.
