    NintendOWNED!!!!

In case you can't tell, this blog is about gaming. Looks like Nintendo has reassumed its place as dominant videogame company... according to the latest numbers, The Wii and DS are outselling all other consoles and handheld systems COMBINED. That's one spicy meatball.

As for my other next-gen console, the Xbox 360, I got this delightful view yesterday: the Red Ring O' Death.

This means "hardware failure." This also means I've lost my game saves. Dammit.

This also means the system will be going home to Mr. Gates for repair soon, and most likely I'll be receiving my fourth 360 from them. It's hard to imagine how the 360 is doing so much better than the PS3 when you consider the repairs almost everyone has had to undergo.

    Come on, Sony, what's up?

Sony's trying to make up for lackluster sales by doing a couple of interesting things... first, for the PSP, it looks like they're going for a redisign that may not be the best idea... it calls for a smaller system with a swiveling screen. The image that goes along with the story gives us an idea what it'd look like: ridiculous.

Also, Sony apparently is releasing a Blu-Ray player that costs exactly as much as the now dead 20GB PS3... anyone else find a problem here? Which one were we overcharged for... a Blu-Ray player or a PS3? If a standalone Blu-Ray player is $500, what the dickens were we getting with a $500 PS3?

I'm confused... is Sony trying to cannibalize Blu-Ray/PS3 sales, while making their PSP smaller and seemingly more fragile at the same time? Is that profitable?

    My head hurts.

    Hypemania

Pre-game-release hype. Don't tell me you've never done it... there's a game coming out soon (for the sake of argument, let's use Super Mario Galaxy) that you really, really want. In fact, you're so sure you want it, you'll take a stand right now to say the game is awesome and will kick everyone's butts, regardless of whether or not you've played it. We see it on every game site, within every message board, and in every specialized club. People love getting a little overexcited over a game, and I myself have done that.

We've also fallen victim to the overhype machine. I don't think anyone other than me thought that Superman Returns was gonna be awesome, but if they did, they may too know the despair I felt when a game that I declared would kick so much keester managed to suck more than a black hole. I realized then what a fool I'd been: this is Superman, for cryin' out loud. There is seemingly no way to make an awesome game about him, and I should've realized that.

I guess what I'm trying to say is gamers, as a (usually) intelligent and coherent community, need to make sure they don't get overhyped about a game they haven't played yet. Will Halo 3 rule? Most likely, since the first two were good, but remember that sequels don't always work out well, even if the first game was bloody awesome. However, I see people who have only played the beta - strictly multiplayer, nowhere even close to finished version - who tell me this game will rock my socks off, and I have a hard time believing it. Superman Returns made me realize that I must judge for myself, or at least wait for the official review.

Blast you, Superman Returns. You stole my hope.

On the other hand, though, Ninja Gaiden for the DS is gonna rule! (Crud, I'm doing it again...)
