Why you should NOT play casual games
I was previously not ashamed to admit that I am looking forward to Animal Crossing for 3DS. I think the only shame I had regarding this game is that I have never played a game from its series before, but the concept of the game truly sounds appealing to me. It looks to be a nice laid back, immersive game which you can just get sucked into and lose a few hours of your life at a time. Similar to The Sims but I guess without the stress of making your sim constantly cook, sleep and go to the toilet.
But still, I wasn't ashamed about wanting this game. Yet some people would believe that I should have been, because I want to play, what the gaming community seems to call, "a casual game". And boy, how right they were.
I was not sure what this meant at first however. What exactly is a casual game; a game that isn't very challenging? a game that predominantly appeals to a casual crowd? Regardless, why would someone shun a game simply for being laid back? It made no sense to me. Until now. I discovered that the people criticizing no doubt play games like Call of Duty, whose online is overrun by ferocious 12 year olds armed to the teeth with RPG's, and intimidating gamer chicks.
See, they have the higher ground because violent games is all they play. Therefore when they judge my tastes and call me a casual, that cannot be refuted. You see, playing a casual game takes time of your life that could be used to play hardcore games. Furthermore playing any game that doesn't involve weapons or death releases this hormone in your body called casualorphines, that makes your brain forget your hardcore gaming skills. Even though I've been a hardcore gamer since the age of 4, playing Grand Theft Auto when it was barely just released, completing difficult adventure classics like Broken Sword and getting strategic with Heroes of Might & Magic, it is just a fact that I suddenly become a casual because I like to put my feet up and get lost in a nice relaxing video game world. Even though I completed the amazing Call of Duty Modern Fun-fair on veteran difficulty and played through Gears of Warsome on Insane difficulty, if I take a break from weapon-driven games I am instantly a lame casual noob.
Even though as a kid every weekend I would sacrifice spending time with my mates just to go out to town, buy any combat-based game and complete it that same week, trade it in the next week and buy another, if I ever once felt like playing something that didn't involve blood and guts then I automatically would lose my reputation as a hardcore gamer.
So here I conduct my closing statements: if you ever get tempted to the dark side by casual games, don't do it. You'll regret it and you'll instantly become a casual-loving zombie with no hardcore EXP.
Heed my words! It's too late for me because I've already made my mind up on buying Animal Crossing, but you can still be saved.
