Story- Child of battle (part 2)

Snow is falling in a quite burb of this eastern european city. Tanks make their rounds through the streets every hour and a half, making sure to take notice of things that look out of the ordinary. A jet passes by overhead, dropping a bomb on one of these beastly machines, destroying it on contact. A few dozen soldiers come running from around a corner, a few of them carrying Stinger missile launchers. They fire at the aircraft- a Harrier- but miss on the first attempt. They prime another launcher for firing, but are quickly distracted from that by a hail of machine gun fire coming from out of the corner of their eyes. Several men fall at the hands of the hidden gunner. Some of the men hurridly equip their AK-style rifles and wait for the firing to stop. It does after about 2 more minutes of sustination. They then start firing sporadically all o'er their current location. The machine gunner- Gavril- ditches his PKM from his fifth-story perch and then grabs another eastern european-made support weapon- the RGB-6 multiple grenade launcher. He waits for just the right moment (when their reinforcements arrive) before firing off all six rounds of incendiary grenades at the unsuspecting men down below. After heading down the stairs and checking out the damage he's done to the enemy, he pulls out a radio and phones in.

"Boss, I got the fools like you have asked me to."

"Good, Gavril, good. You may now return to HQ."

He puts away the radio, ditches his weaponry in a safe place, and starts to walk along the streets like any other teenager would in a time of peace. Unfortunately, he wasn't normal, and it definently wasn't peaceful.

Story- Child of battle (part 1)

It is daytime, but the sun is blotted out by any number of smoke columns rising towards the sky. Buildings everywhere in an eastern European-like city are either demolished completely or just barely standing. There are puddles of blood just about everywhere there is a body- some of it has caked into the ground. Many of the bodies are bullet-ridden, others are crushed underneath buildings, and some are just lying there from starvation. A young boy- no more than eight or ten years old, around four feet tall and sporting white hair- is rummaging through those bodies for anything he could use. Whether it be food, clothing, or medical supplies, he needed it, and he needed it badly. He comes across a body with an assault rifle strewn across it, an AKM to be exact. He picks it up and examines it. He hears some more of the men who were here earlier and hides. The soldiers pull close to the boy's location and also start ransacking the dead, but in a more disrespectful manner. One of the armed men says something to the other in a Bulgarian dialect. The other responds and they all fan out, arming themselves with their own assault rifles. The young boy recognizes one of the men, one with a red snake tattoo, as the man who killed his family only two nights ago. He is about to pull the trigger, ready to kill the man in cold blood, when all of a sudden, gunfire erupts from the other side of the men. A man, tall and blonde-ish haired- equipped with a heavily-modified AKM rifle kills all the other men, and spots the boy. He starts to speak to the boy in English. The boy just stands there, both astonished at what the man did for him, and confused, because he cannot understand his speech. The man tries again, but this time, in Bulgarian.

"I'm sorry, young man, but did you want to kill one of these men yourself?"

    The boy just nods.

    "Which one?"

He points at the one who has the tattoo.

    "Ah, I see. Revenge?"

    The boy once again nods.

"Don't let it get to you, young lad. Where are your parents? I want to take you home to them."

The boy just drops his head. "I don't have any. They were killed a few nights ago by that man there"

"Don't let revenge cloud your judgement, boy. What's your name?"

    "My parents called me Gavril."

"Well, Gavril, you can call me father now. But most others call me Solidus."

    To be continued...

    Old Movie review (The Rock)

I was just thinkin' that it was time that I started doing this. Okay... where to begin?

Story- Rogue Marines capture several warheads loaded out with a chemical inside them labeled VX. (SCIENCE TIDBIT- This particular type of nerve gas can cause death by asphyxiation by blocking certain chemicals within the human body. As little as 200 micrograms can kill a person. It is known as the deadliest type of nerve gas to date.) They are intent on firing these warheads into the heart of San Francisco if their demands for compensation towards families of the fallen are not met. They expected that they'd send in SEALs- what they didn't expect were a bio-physycist from the FBI and a former "guest" of the facility. It's not the most original story out there, but it's one of the best (if not THE best) executions of the general idea.

Acting- This is some of the best acting done by live humans that I've seen, period. Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage, Ed Harris, and everyone else work splendidly beautiful together in this work of treachery, government cover-ups, and action-packed battle come together on-screen. Michael Bay knew what he was doing with all of the various parts of the film, and knew full-well that a film that took place on Alcatraz could only be filmed there on the Rock.

Sound- Holy crap- that explosion was HUGE! Did that bullet just whiz by my head? Whoa, I'd better get out of the way of that Humvee! "Dude... you just %#$@*^ up your Ferrari" "It's not mine." So many classic moments, such great sound... and the soundtrack- WHOA! I can now see why they picked Harry Gregson-Williams as the man to do the MGS 2 and 3 soundtracks... it's so... beautiful, tense, whatever you want to call it. It just fits perfectly.

Overall: If you've got the time to, I would say that you at least give this one a rental (if you have the cash to, buy the Criterion Collection edition of the DVD- it's the best one) on a Friday night.
