Hello you!
-
13Feb 09
The GameSpot UK Podcast has gone weekly in 2009, and we're constantly trying to think of new things we can add to the show. To this end, we'll now be uploading our show notes to the site alongside the podcast itself every Thursday.
As always, let us know what you think and whether you'd like to see anything else on the show! Here are the notes for this week's show.

This week, I wrote about Battlefield 1943, hosted a Start/Select special with developer DICE, invited the Guinness World Records onto the GameSpot UK Podcast and made a guest appearance on the CNET UK Podcast.
Battlefield 1943 is the next game in the acclaimed multiplayer shooter series, and I travelled to Sweden to be the first person in the world to play it. It will be downloadable-only on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and PC.
Start/Select this week focusses on DICE, the development team behind the incredibly successful Battlefield series and the recent Mirror's Edge. The offices is one of the most lavishly-designed development centres in the world, and we were given full access.
For the GameSpot UK Podcast, we invited the writers behind The Guinness Book of World Records Gamer's Edition onto the show They tell us about writing their second annual compendium, while CNET UK's Nate Lanxon joins us to talk about completing Gears of War 2 on insane.
Returning the favour, I also appeared on the CNET UK Podcast to talk to the team about taxing the internet, Gears of War PC problems, and all the other big news from the tech world. The CNET UK Podcast is well worth listening to anyway, so subscribe in iTunes to get it delivered to you every Friday.
On the preview side, I also attended a Sega event to speak to Sonic creator Yuki Naka and see his new game Let's Tap, as well as Hearts of Iron 3 from Paradox. This week, I'll be talking to the composer behind Killzone 2 in central London, and reviewing PlayStation Network title Flower.

Check out the beginning of this week's Start/Select for my Godfather impression--it's like I'm channeling Brando himself.

As I mentioned last week, we're going weekly with Start/Select in 2009, so we filmed a short promo to get on the site and the GameSpot YouTube channel. Let us know what you think, and check out the show here.

As part of our New Year's Resolutions, we're taking GameSpot UK's video and audio shows weekly in 2009. The GameSpot UK Podcast goes out on Thursdays and Start/Select on Fridays -- and remember you can subscribe to both in iTunes.
We'd love to hear your feedback on Start/Select and what you'd like to see from the show -- let us know your thoughts in the GameSpot UK forum!

Merry Christmas everyone!
If you haven't checked it out already, head over to our 'Best Games of 2008' feature. In particular, the 'Best Implementation of UGC' and the 'Best British-Developed Game' categories, both of which I wrote up way back at the beginning of December.

21Dec 08After putting the finishing touches to the GameSpot UK Podcast and writing a F.E.A.R. 2 preview on the train home, I've now made it back for Christmas. With the PlayStation 3 in tow, I'm spending some of my time playing Metal Gear Solid 4 (as you can see from my updated 'Now Playing' list), the rest of it eating lovely food with my family. I'll be back online in the new year, so have a merry Christmas!

As you can see to the right of my profile, I'm now registered on the PlayStation Network as 'GuyJC'. I've actually been registered for a while, but I've only recently bought a PS3 and been using the account regularly. Coincidentally, Sony's Home launches tomorrow, so if anyone wants to come help me check it out then buddy me up!
When you've added me to your friends list, check out my extensive preview on Home from this year's E3.

This weekend, I finally convinced my girlfriend to have a play on Gears of War 2 multiplayer. She's not quite a gaming widow--she has a Nintendo DS and plays LittleBigPlanet, but the complex controls and ultra-violence of Gears are not something she's usually drawn to. For that reason, I filmed her playing and then asked for her opinions afterwards. I think she enjoyed it more than she let on.

On Weds night, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King launched in London's famous Oxford Street, and we were there to interview Blizzard and the fans.

Last night's London launch of Wrath of the Lich King was crazy! Queues round the block, even when we were leaving at 1am. Here's a video of some of the 1,008 special editions of the game on sale at HMV, as well as the World of Warcraft ice sculpture.

With Loco Roco 2 out at the end of this month, I thought I would post an interview I did with the game's designer, Tsutomu Kouno, about the original. We'll have three copies of Loco Roco 2 to give away on tomorrow's podcast, so make sure you have a listen to the show when we post it tomorrow afternoon!

Luke uncovered something strange in the PSP version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 today, and luckily I caught it on video. Strange bug or new feature? You decide!

Sony sent in a special surprise today--a miniature Sackboy figurine and a copy of LittleBigPlanet. The collectable was sent to reviewers of the game, possibly to distract them from writing bad news about the game being delayed.
In case you haven't seen the video review, check it out below and let us know what you think.

Even though we've been hard at work on the FIFA 09 and LittleBigPlanet reviews, we've still had chance to put out the recent editions of The GameSpot UK Podcast and Start/Select. The former has an interview with the developers of LEGO Batman and the latter is a shooter special with interviews on Gears of War 2 and Far Cry 2. Head over the the podcast and Start/Select pages to leave comments!

Update: The video is now live here.
By the time you read this, the FIFA 09 text review for Xbox 360 and PS3 should be live. Sorry about the short delay, but all the team at GameSpot UK has been working extra-hard to do our first video review around this game, and we should have the fruits of our labour ready to show by the end of today.
We also wanted to really take the time to review the online aspects of the game, new features which really form the backbone of what the new version is about. I'll update this post once the video review goes up, because we're really eager to find out what you think!

I've just seen this really cool video that the guys in the US have put together, rounding up some of this week's releases. One of them is Wipeout HD, which I reviewed last week, and I'm hoping they're going to be putting together another one next week, when I'll hopefully have FIFA 09 in the bag. Anyway, here's the video!

I only occassionally post in my blog about the podcast (because I'm sure most of you listen anyway!), but I thought I would highlight this week's show. If you're at all interested in development, how large publishers deal with smaller companies or the wider industry in general, then I urge you to listen to our interview with the guys from Introversion Software, who fill us in on all of their experiences so far.

On today's GameSpot UK podcast, we did away with printing off all the competition entries and just randomly chose them on my laptop instead. This prompted me to look at our green website SmartPlanet, and in between reading about ethically-sourced chocolate I found a rather cool map of our shared offices. Although the river Thames is slightly sludgier than the whale-filled utopia depicted below, I like the way it's laid out and will probably use it to direct future visitors to our offices.
