A coroner in New Zealand has said drinking Coca Cola was a

"substantial factor" in the death of a 30 year old woman 3 years

ago.

However the Coca Cola company is protesting that because

there is such a thing as being reasonable.

Ms. Harris, the woman in question, drank 10 litres of coke

per day!

That is over 2 gallons which is way beyond a reasonable

amount of sugar or caffeine intake and the coroner must

have an agenda against sodas to call that a factor.

It was her addiction and the family enabling her because

they knew of the problem since her teeth were pulled to due

decaying from the sugar well before she reached age 30 and

had the fatal heart attack.

I was going to add a photo or two but am having

trouble with this 'lovely site'

photos are not necessary for this story anyway.

the story is from BBC and NDTV.com

Over 2-gallons a DAY? That's insane! Her blood sugar must have been through the roof!

@Danyawesomsauce she did have all her teeth removed from sugar decay a couple years before this happened

I would have killed myself with drink a few times were I not immortal.

@Palantas of course you are - since you are taking over for Duke Nukem you have to be immortal

That is a lot of Coke to drink in one day. Her sugar count was probably astronomical!

@Garrison_Ford considering she lost all her teeth a couple years before that heart attack you are correct

My how "progressives" sure like to bully them some inanimate objects these days.  Demonization and taxation seem to be the one-two punch that overrides education and choice when combating perceived problems...  although they do claim to champion the latter *snort*.

Sometimes I get headaches and upset tummies that only a Coke will fix.  Take my ammo.  I'll keep my Coca-Cola, thank you.

I'm reminded of one of the advertising slogans for Coca-Cola, used here in NZ during the '70's and '80's...

"Coke adds life"

@s_h_a_d_o it was in America too about the same time  Aussie  had that "Football, Meat Pies, Kangaroos and Holden Cars."  which is one of my all time favourite adverts.

From my knowledge Cola is the least harmful beverage one could drink. Many doctors advise their patients to drink Coca Cola for various reasons. However 10 litres are a lot. I imagine even if you drink 10 litres of pure water every day you are probably going to suffer by something.

@Rheinmetal  I have a bad flu  once a year or so and have 100 ml of cola per day for the first three or four days and then a soda cracker per day until I can finally have some noodle soup after about a week.

at least it makes for a good diet.

@Rheinmetal I find Coca Cola being recommended to patients to be a bit shocking.

I once heard about an experiment about putting a chicken bone inside a Coca Cola bottle and leaving it for a couple of weeks. I tried it and got the same result as that of the experiment - the bone practically disappeared.

Well 10 litres is a lot, isn't it. Too much caffeine can kill you. Some bodybuilders take a large quantity because it is being said that it is a good fat burner and I know of one who fall in to coma.

Must admit I am a bit addicted to carbonated drinks myself and it upsets the stomach and rises the acidity level which is hazardous to one's health. But then Coca Cola is not to blame, one can harm oneself consuming too much of everything...

@khatibi22 I think sodas are about the same as 'gatorade' or sports drinks - you need sugar and salt replenished when you work out/do karate

I knew of this story.....as a physician it doesn't surprise me, the average  (regular) coca cola consumption here is about 2 litres per day per person....in adult population.....no wonder why we have a higher obesity rate than US..... and type 2 diabetes included.

Interestingly, it seems that junk food, or in this case "junk drinks" are inversely associated with economic status here..... in the poorest cities, or small  rural towns there's always a Coca Cola sign !!!!  Viva !!!!

I quit on regular coca cola a long time ago......still I drink almost 1 liter per day of diet coke..... which is "a bit" healthier......minus calories....

@N-REAL when I could get it I used to drink Doble Cola.  my fave it Tamarind soda I get a few 750ml bottles every week. I had 5 this week and a couple of mandarin orange.

@fend_oblivion unbelievably stupid and I just can't believe anyone could even drink one litre a day!

Too much of just about anything will kill you.

@johnsteed7 two gallons of coke a day is not exactly 'moderation' so of course her family blamed it on Coke even though she had to have all her teeth pulled a couple years before she died because of all the sugar decay :P

in the town where I live a lady died from too much water during a radio contest called wee for a Wii  when she tried to win a Wii at launch for her kid by chugging water without using the bathroom

I actually remember this story, but I heard it like a year or two ago.  I might be thinking of another woman altogether, I'm not sure, but it seems to fit the story I remember.

I drink quite a bit of soda, admittedly, but I remember I did the math and it sounded like this woman drank an astonishing amount of soda every single day.  I also remember hearing that, aside from drinking coke, she smoked cigarettes and didn't eat a whole lot.  And if that's the case, that diet was bound to have quite an impact.

iowastate

@Ovirew this happened a couple years ago and it isn't the only coke/soda over dose in the news and yeah a couple of gallons a day is incredible.   the last time I bought two litres of coke after three days I had to throw away what went flat because I could not finish it  and this lady put away 10 litres per day for years!!!

  that is hard to believe.

drinking that much coke has got to do something to you, and something not good...I drink my 8 glasses of water a day and have, maybe, 1 soda.

@pokecharm I drink mostly water and probably four or five sodas a week but not always coke.
