Kudos Sony
Today, whilst reading up on Sony's PlayStation 4 announcements I found myself getting genuinely excited about gaming news for the first time in years. And the weird thing is that, on reflection, they didn't really offer a whole lot to get excited about, and that's kind of the point.
Don't get me wrong, I think Sony have offered up plenty of new features and functionality for us to get our teeth into, but moreover they have kept it simple.
At a time in gaming history where the perception is that the big studios are no give and all take, with micro-transactions and digital rights management, I've found myself fretting about the future of gaming. Microsoft's recent Xbox One reveal only served to consolidate this feeling, despite some of the fantastic new things they're planning on doing.
Overshadowed by the backlash from fans, Microsoft must have been hoping that Sony were going to get in bed with the push toward DRM that seemed so inevitable. But they did not. Instead they chose to listen to their customers; a concept which almost feels alien at the moment.
Allowing users to trade games, supporting indie developers, having a launch price lower than their previous console, Sony were basically saying "hey guys, forget about the past. We're here for you." Although to be fair, there are still a few things that might ruffle the feathers of some fans, such as having to pay to play online (something which anyone migrating from xbox will already be used to) and lack of backward compatibility.
But I don't care. Sony are offering me a reasonably priced next gen console without any of the BS. Thanks guys.

Thought extraction
My plan to write a few reviews may have fallen through, however I did spend my time productively. I met up with a lot of friends (old and new), ate and drank far too much a caught a little bit of live music (FYI: Katherine A.D. could have been much better).
I now have another week off work and day one has been a bit of a chill out thus far. That said I've started to make some in-roads on an idea I had for a cartoon... which could be interesting given my limited experience with animating. So far I've written a rough plot, drawn some character designs and written a bit of music for it, so we'll see what comes of that.
In other news I'm planning on breeding a few critters soon including red foot tortoises and African pygmy hedgehogs.
I MAY write some game reviews, but I might not. who cares?

Time off work means time to spend productively (or waste)
This year the royal family have teamed up with the Christians to give us a shed load of economy-damaging bank holidays, but the upshot is I now have 11 straight days off work (okay, so I may have had to take three days holiday to get this but the point remains). As such I need something to keep me busy and stop me from slipping into that dreaded vegetable brain-rot stage you sometimes get when you're not in work for a while, so I have decided to review a few games... maybe someone might actually read them at some point too (the poor sod).
...so watch this space... it could happen... unless I get distracted...
